Vinomofo Wine Deals

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

Over the years, some wine purchased from VM can be cellared and improve:
Glenlofty Pyrenees Shiraz 2011, bought it for $7.8 a bottle, drank a bottle last Christmas and IS still improving, and the last two cases will be cellared beyond 2020;
Both of the Fox Creek Fox & Hounds 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, very good now and should be fine for a few more years;
Fox Gordon Brothers & Sisters Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, very good now and should be fine for a few more years; &
Many vintages of Maverick Twins varieties, all these wine are below $10 a bottle from VM and cellared well (Oh well, medium term if not long haul).

Good post.

It's definitely not correct to generalise and state that cheap wines from VM cannot be cellared. VM has plenty of offerings under $20 or even $10 that can be cellared for 10+ years.

I think the above-average, quality drops from Vinomofo are becoming rarer. In their early days they had far better deals than they do now. 2014 and earlier had some amazing deals from what I read. 2015 was a pretty good year. 2016, not as good. 2017 has been a bit underwhelming so far. if that trend continues, there might be a few, decent, cellarable VM wines. But a lot more dross and "made for VM" wines to sift through. Additionally, the good quality stuff will disappear faster, due to the increased size and awareness of VM

bmhchang - you've just hit on a whole bunch of my favorite VM purchases. All crackers for the $$

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

VM have just put up a 95/96-pt Mornington Peninsula pinot for $19.90/bt., and yesterday put up a Halliday 94-pt 2011 WA Great Southern cabernet sauvignon for $13.50/bottle. Anyone venture a guess(es)?

Has anyone tried Ulithorne Familia Shiraz? Thoughts? I'm returning Pudding Stone and trying to work out what to replace it with. Broker recommended it.

After several mentions on the thread we opened one earlier this week.

It was the ULITHORNE FAMILIA SHIRAZ 2014 from VM, @ $144 delivered in Nov'15.

While it is a "just passable" Shiraz only one modest glass was sampled first day. Second day OK
enough and third day emptied 1/3bottle down the sink.

If a bottle lasts three days (here) then I guess that speaks for itself.

To describe it - lacked some depth, didn't linger on the taste buds, had much better wine
from VM for same or less $$'s. I don't think I'd buy it again.

The previous buy of this same 2014 wine @ $132 in OCT'15, was a terrific
Shiraz and was the catalyst to buy the second doz.

Remember thinking "was the latter NOV. doz. the same as the first OCT purchase", it wasn't
in the same class, and in fact tasted just like it did this week, OK but uninspiring.

These comments are about wines that suit my palate, yours may be quite different.

It's the Sea Glass as featured in this pinot six pack https://vinomofo.com/wines/mixed-case/premium-pinot-pack although they list full price in that pack as $32 whilst listing the full price on the black market listing as $52. Not sure which is correct.

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

Just cracked hg15#6 , so I have 6 left...

I thought this ( the homeless grapes project) was a really nice exercise by the 'fo : I was pleased to buy and quite pleased with my plonk when it (eventually) arrived.
It's quite drinkable and a nice talking piece when folks read the label.
Fast forward to this year and it seems the new 'fo way is trumps
The wine , which was picked "yesterday" , is already bottled and for sale.
I think I will pass…..

I have these puppies waiting at home for me:

mof_ SECRET DEAL Semillon 2009 (I sussed this one out & really look forward to it) It appeared in the Sunday list too, so maybe some are left?
6pk Brokenwood Oakley Creek Hunter Valley Semillon 2009 750mL
Reva Dolcetto d'Alba 2014
Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya 2014

I know we in this forum have developed a certain degree of cynicism re VM (me too), I do think they are trying to lift their game. They seem to be dipping their toes into importing but to their credit are offering a range of styles & varieties little seen in Oz. Although the egregious 'tasting' notes & spurious RRP's are off-putting. They're not as flexible as niche merchants (ie single bottle quantities) but I think they do provide some access to unusual wines. It remains to be seen if they're shifting stuff that won't sell over there. Whilst the days of the super deals may be a thing of the past, if one is disciplined & with due diligence I think they can provide wines that educate, expand our horizons & hopefully thrill us. If looking for a super deal on Shiraz, CS etc there will be an awful (sometimes truly) lot to swim & sip through though.
