I bought Rockford BP Shiraz regularly from 1988 vintage ($16.50) to 2005 ($50) and then again my last buy was the 2010 vintage @ $58. I sold at auction most of what I had when I stopped buying. The last one I tried at the winery was the 2016 @ $72 and I thought is was maybe a fair $50 wine compared to the other wines we tasted on that winery crawl.
On the Barossa part of that trip I bough Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz (at mates rates, but full price similar to BP), and wines from Cirillo, Rolf Binder and Izway. Other Barossa wines I've bought recently instead of BP include Tim Smith Shiraz and Reserve Shiraz, Spinifex Indigene, Kalleske, Teusner Big Jim and a few others.

Rockford is a good marketing exercise, at vintage time they have small trucks arriving at CD and people hand shoveling the grapes into the small old-fashioned winery next to the CD. People never see the real winery over the hill. At the rate they process the grapes through the little show setup it would take about 3 years to process each vintage.

What is a "wine enthusiast"? I just like drinking the stuff, the best I can afford, so of course finding those and getting the "best" at the right price makes the budget go further and allows the occasional stretch to more expensive wines that are actually worth the price.

@redbigot , I have never tried the Rockford BP before and almost bid a bottle at around $200 including the commission. In fact what is the fair price point do you think it is and what range of wine you think that is comparable to it? Thanks.

What vintage was it? Where are you based? You can probably find it as some bottle shops for less than that. Or find it on a restaurant list at that price. At least any wine faults you send it back and ask for another bottle.

Geez the price of the Mt Edelstone has gone through the roof! Only a decade ago it was about $85.

I’ve been happy buying Rockford wines at the cellar door price, but I would never pay a premium over that. You can rely on the expert reviews, BP does not score that high. But there is a certain amount of romance about the limited supply, and the bottles are nice. I think Wendouree is the same a bit, but I wasn’t able to get on their mailing list.

Actually it is the quality of their wine that made it so special. As far as the marketing strategy, I don’t think they have one. If they did, they would have launched an advertising campaign, ramped up the production and charge for the wine what the market would bear.

The secondary market price indicates what they could fetch potentially. Its people who flip their allotment sell at the inflated prices in the secondary market, not Rockford. And clearly there is a genuine demand for it.

I have never heard of them when I discovered them, only came across Rockford by accident and I still don’t see any big Rockford ads/posters on the back of the buses!

Do yourself a favour and try a bottle if you can.

They have a brilliant marketing strategy. Most people just don't see it as a marketing strategy.

It enables them to put up the price of their wine every year without fail, no matter the quality of the vintage and generally sell all they can make fairly quickly, not as quickly as Wendouree, but that's again a slightly different operation in the same "exclusive" mould.

At CD pricing Rockfords BP and Rifle Range are bloody good wines IMO.

For a 16 year old wine, I think the price isn't outrageous really. You'd obviously be taking a risk with provenance though. A quick google finds this Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 2009 for $218!
