Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Oh, to stay on topic, we had soup, which was good! and multiple top-ups of a half-decent red for me and V&T for my lovely wife.

She was very taken by the little salt and pepper shakers, so we took them. Now I have the responsibility of flying J as much as possible to get more - bit of a trial I know, but we do what we must for domestic bliss.....

My wife took to the small extra virgin olive oil vials on our last J trip to PER. When we left the CSM passed on a few more.

I suppose we must all sacrifice for domestic bliss.

I have had a couple of interesting trips in J in the last week now that the pointy end is getting busier.

MEL-BNE the cabin was 8/8 and clearly the one crew member couldn't keep up (i.e. waiting 20 mins for a second drink) and clearly running at 110% capacity.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I had such now and again; more often than not by in inexperienced / disorganised FA. It's not really airline specific.

Sometimes the cabin does not even need to be full.

Serfy

Yes maybe that's what it was. It just seemed strange that on my first Virgin flight that was full ( after maybe 10 this year) this was the one that suffered!

Cheers

If anyone else get's the unorganised, scatterbrain 30 something ditzy blonde who SLAMS everything and who is just a mess, please email Virgin and leave feedback. She works the J cabin as the CSM (or whatever the role is)

She is shocking and I have had her twice now!

She needs to go

all my CSMs have generally been pretty good.
interesting a lot of SYD-BNE vv flights with Economy full to the brim - at least a half dozen Flexis on board, and none of them smart enough to upgrade into an almost empty J cabin.

DJ call them CS for Cabin Supervisor I think Qantas is CSM for Customer Service Manager and Pam Ann calls then all CSD's want extend on Pam's unless you private me but safe to say last 2 letters are shortened for standing at door.

I fly SYD-MEL all the time - often on flexis - and maybe i'm just stupid but i can't see the point in upgrading to J most of the time. Please explain why i'm an idiot.

Interesting I flew MEL to OOL full J class snack was risotto and raspberry tart for desert, great service no one waited for anything and CS also had to deal with a drug fueled passenger wanting to get of the flight halfway through. She did a great job. We landed Federal Police got on a then business class got off. Don't know why other CS have issues.

Good lord! I am so lucky to not have encountered any monkey business like this. What the hell is wrong with people? They can't wait to get into the recreational stuff till _after_ the flight??? Sheesh.

OK did a MEL-SYD-MEL in J today.. Totally underwhelmed with the J food offering. 2 chicken sandwich fingers on the way up and the infamous cheese platter in the evening.

I'm sorry VA, but QF smash you guys on J food. Still a long way to go.

That was an A330 flight though am I right? The 330's are head and shoulders better value than any other J dom flight imho, including QF. The 737, apparently for 'galley space' reasons is just rubbish usually.

I think that's a bit harsh.

Rubbish? There are some examples in here of some pretty good food on 738s.

Monday 5pm - Melbourne to Brisbane - Business

I had the 5pm flight out of Melbourne which seems to be one of the infamous 'snack' flights despite it being scheduled to land in Brisbane at 7:10pm. In this case, we ended up circling the gold coast for about 40 minutes and not landing until 8pm, so I personally think that this flight should have been a dinner flight.

Luckily, I had a decent dinner in the lounge. I think the Melbourne lounge is fantastic, it’s a good size and there are always plenty of drinks and food to eat. Monday’s dinner was a choice of soup and chicken curry, which was delicious.

Upon entering the plane we were offered coat service and shortly after a drink. I chose the mocktail and thought it was a great drink. The cabin only had 5 people and I luckily ended up with 2 seats to myself.

The seats themselves are quite comfy and a far superior to Qantas’ current grey business seats, however it will be interesting to see how they match up with the new Qantas leather seats that are currently being rolled out. My only complaints are the lack of footrest and the flimsy tray table, but I guess these are relatively minor.

The ‘snack’ service was served about 15 minutes into the flight. The snack was the risotto and raspberry panna-cotta along with the standard drinks service. The risotto wasn’t exactly outstanding, but the panna-cotta was fantastic. The main problem is the size of the meal, as many people have mentioned. I would expect a bigger meal for a 2+ hour business class flight that lands after 7pm.

After dinner the trays we promptly collected and more drinks we offered. This continued throughout the flight where the flight attendant when around every 15 minutes topping up glasses and offering new drinks.

Overall, I thought it was a good flight and the cabin crew are certainly starting to understand how to deliver a real business class service. The only downside is the small serving sizes, however we can’t blame the crew for this.

Friday 7:55pm - Brisbane to Melbourne - Business

The trip home, thankfully, just make the cut as a dinner service flight which I was hoping would be a nice change from the snack flight. Overall, the service was on-par with my first flight and the business cabin flight attendant was very attentive to her passengers - which was fairly easy as there were only two. The only difference I noted that this time we were offered The Australian newspaper after boarding which I gladly accepted.

Again, Dinner was served about 15 minutes into the flight as well as drinks. We were offer a choice between the the pasta bake and the tofu green curry - I chose the pasta bake as I am not a huge fan of tofu. Personally, I think a green chicken curry would be a big hit. The pasta bake tasted pretty decent and despite it looking small was actually just the right size. I would only suggest that they dial down the amount of breadcrumbs and add a little more sauce. The roll was excellent and I do like a good roll with a smattering of butter. The rest of the meal, however, is rather disappointing. The salad is, well... dismal at best and the chocolate nuts for desert is simple not enough. I would suggest scraping both and including a proper dessert like we see on the snack service.

Again, the trays were promptly collected and our drinks were refilled throughout the flight. Another minor differ, I was offered more snacks (from the economy menu) towards the end of the flight. I asked for the cheese and crackers and was presently surprised when they were delivered as a cheese plate instead of in the packet (photo included).

Overall, I think this was also a good flight and was very happy with the service.

I'm sorry VA, but QF smash you guys on J food. Still a long way to go.

As I have posted before, is it fair to make such statements when QF have very similar serving sizes outside of meal times? Are you comparing VA J snacks to QF J meals?

A better and more accurate comparison would be a meal time J flight of a similar length leg on both carriers. Even then it's a pretty small sample size for such a dramatic conclusion, but it would give a realistic insight.

Whilst it is not an excuse for poor quality food, which I admit I have had on only one of my more than 30 business class DJ flights this year, I still struggle when people want to criticize the 737 800 catering compared to Qantas' catering. When I fly HBA to SYD the j class DJ fare is nearly $400 cheaper one way. For that saving I can forgive DJ for serving average or slightly better than average meals
