Virgin Australia Discover Gold (Status Match)

Quick FYI - I never heard through putting the enquiry through the website. Emailed to the red@ account. Reply within 5 days but no choice to when I wanted to start the gold pilot

There is now.

Really quite annoying that they penalise QFF Plats who also fly VA occasionally by ruling out anyone who's had "Velocity Silver, Gold or Platinum Status since April 2020"....

Three months won't cut it for most to bother.

1 sector and just 80SC’s within those 3 months to retain Gold for a further 12 months or 2 sectors and 200SC’s within the 3 months to get Platinum for 12 months.
Pretty good offer IMO if you are thinking of trying them out. Effectively you can get Platinum for around $700

Does VA have soft landings? I assume I'm guaranteed lounge access for 24 months if I go for Platinum?

Been announceed that status match will be extended to all NON-VelocityVA partners. That's basically Oneworld (except Qatar), Skyteam and Most of Star Alliance (excluding AC, UA, SQ).

So I applied via the website contact form and via the red@ email a few weeks back, but no response (except automated case number).
Today I applied via the "switcharoo" email address at 9:29am, at 10:03am my application was approved..

Hi,

We’ve reviewed your Switch-a-roo status match application and are pleased to confirm that your application has now been approved. Congratulations! The upgrade into Switch-a-roo Discover Gold 3-months trial status will be applied to your membership account within the next 48 hours.

Your trial Gold Status will last for three months from the date it is applied to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account. To view your new benefit period in Discover Gold, please log into your velocity membership account and head to "My Velocity" and then click on "My Status".

If you are a frequent flyer with equivalent of Velocity Gold Status and if you earn 80 Status Credits and fly at least one Eligible Sector during your 3-months Switch-a-roo Discover Gold trial, you’ll be eligible to maintain Gold Status with Velocity for a further 12 months.

If you are a frequent flyer with equivalent of Velocity Platinum Status and you earn 200 Status Credits and fly at least two Eligible Sector’s during your 3-month Switch-a-roo Discover Gold trial, you’ll be eligible to be upgraded to Platinum Status with Velocity for a further 12 months. To be eligible for a fast track to Velocity Platinum Status all 200 Status Credits must be earned by flying on flights that are operated by Virgin Australia and start with a VA flight number.

For more information on the Switch-a-roo Discover Gold trial, please see the webpage.

I gather this means I'm Gold for now but as I have OWE I am also eligible for the Platinum if I reach the higher criteria within the Gold trial period? Am I reading that correctly?

Wow, that is quite directed 😂

cheap shot, not sure when the last person to join QFF actually paid the $99 joining fee!
So many options everywhere offering it's free, why wouldn't QF just scrap $99 joining fee all together. Then again QF do find the simple things the most difficult to knock over.

For me it's a no brainer to get platinum. I fly regularly to the gold coast and through amex travel with my Platinum card they have J fares from Melbourne for $540 return providing 230 SCs.

I usually fly Jetstar Y with a Max bundle and this is only about $150 extra.

I’ve been waiting for this! Into it like a rat up a drainpipe ( or a rat abandoning a sinking ship 🤣). Easy VA Plat while retaining OWE for the next 18 months for free 😃 ❤️

Just thinking about this a bit more - given there's no lifetime status credits with VA, this limitation is really encouraging me to create a brand new Velocity profile ...

That's a great idea! I wonder if it would work though?

My, myself and I agree. I think I have a new UA account number for every SQ flight I've been forced to take in Y :D

Done - took a pic of my last physical card to go with the image of current digital card, although I get the feeling that they won't need much convincing :) .

What with VA status, QR and UA partnering with VA, and ability to swap QR avios with BA ones, flying VA now is a no-brainer (but obviously need to credit to VA for the next few flights). Since the QF lounge in HBA is so coughpy and I often forego it and sit out in the terminal, I won't be worrying that VA doesn't have a lounge at HBA.
