Virgin Australia Discover Gold (Status Match)

Congratulations! I still haven't received my Welcome to Gold Pack. I can live without a card for now as there's a virtual one on the App and for obvious reasons I won't be going overseas any time soon.

But does anybody know if those baggage tags are needed to get priority baggage treatment?

Re : Welcome pack - oh yes, I completely forgot about it. I have changed my address in the Personal Details section - hopefully a welcome pack will arrive soon

re : baggage tags & priority treatment - My answers : Yes & Not Sure.

Yes, because I think the baggage tags will have a barcode that's private to you and will identify the traveller and their FF tier. That being said, I can't REALLY say that you'd need the tag to get preferential treatment.

Not Sure because - even if you have the tag, you can always ask for a baggage tag printed for check-in luggage. This will also have a barcode that will identify the pax and their tier.

Also, from my experience with QF, the word "PRIORITY" will be printed. So the baggage handlers know to load your bag last so that it comes out first in the carousal. VA might be doing something similar to printing "PRIORITY" or something to that effect to visually alert the baggage handlers.

VA are very solid on getting the priority bags thru 1st.
That's good to know :) very ... very ... good to know :)

The physical VA Gold or Plat luggage tags make no difference to bags coming out first, second, third or last.

It's all about the paper/stickered luggage barcode that goes on at the airport check in desk or bag drop (or if checked in at a desk they'll usually put a priority tag on it also).

Still no card received. I phoned the guest centre ... evidently there is an ongoing issue with getting the gold pack out to people who qualified thru Discover Gold.

Argh! did they say that the "ongoing issue" was due to CoVID-19 🤣

I have heard a few companies use CoVID as the "reason" for most of their inefficiencies

Never fear though, the competition aren't any better, almost a month on and still awaiting my QF gold card pack too!

I thought QF stopped sending cards in the mail ? And I have only used the digital card in my phone's Wallet in the past 2 years ... the last time I got a card on mail was when I qualified for QFP for the first time. Ever since, I have not got any card for my re-qualifications? So I'm assuming newly minted QFS,G,P will not be getting their cards/packs on mail either.

Not according to their status match email (stated arriving by post within 14 days) and also comments in the equivalent QF thread to this made mention of receiving new cards and also Q Tags.

If memory serves in the past it's usually been about a month between Status review and new card arriving with VA.

Although getting way off topic, point being things are (disappointingly) pretty slow around the place at present. The other day I had Toll in Sydney telling me an urgent package was sitting in Botany, yet the Adelaide office was adamant it was here. And then there's Aus Post....!

What's extra weird is that a day or so after I was approved for gold status I nominated my partner for a companion gold card, and that arrived only a week later!

Did not manage to get into the Virgin Australia status match in time, only ending up getting QF to match my UA Premier Gold I earned to their Gold. I have no qualms in this choice though, as part of OneWorld I'll have access to the usual suspects of airlines I'd fly once COVID gets cancelled. At the same time, I enjoyed the domestic lounges, the shower facilities were quite good, especially the one at BNE although the food spread could be improved as well as the vintage of DOM on offer. From what I hear from other AFF members, Virgin status is nothing to write home about in terms of benefits and lounges so likely not missing out on much. At the same time, I'm racking up Virgin Australia points at an alarming pace, and reckon I'll just redeem towards a J award should I want those perks.

My nominated Gold companion has already received a membership card, but I never got one myself. 🤔

This may sound daft - how on earth did you nominate a Companion Good off the back of the Status challenge/match?

It was one of the benefits of the promo - earn the required status credits to get another year of Velocity Gold & nominate a companion Gold membership. It can be done over the phone, as discussed up-thread.

I'm interested to know if the challenge is still open for anyone ie is anyone still showing 80SC to qualify by 28 Oct?
