I’ve flown J class 28/1/12 from PER-ADL (2hr 55min) on E190 on the 0810-1335 flight. In terms of virgin J class experience, I only have the PER-SYD A330 J experience to compare with. Admittedly, I was concerned when I read that the refurbishments were only going to be started in Feb and I was wondering what exactly would be on offer.
Seating- Currently, only PE seating was on offer. As stated previously, the refurbishments to the E190s were going to start in Feb. For extra leg room, row 2 is better to stretch out. There is no cabin divider. Because I was the only J class PAX, there were some PAX that tried to sit in row 1 and 2 but they were promptly told that row 1 and 2 were “business class cabin only”.
Service- Single FA for J PAX. As previously stated, only 4 J PAX allowed in the current 8 seat cabin. Pre-flight drink (water only) and newspaper were offered. Amenities bag was on my seat. After take-off, drinks were offered including alcohol if wanted.
Luckily, no catering issues on this flight! There was 1 meal served-spinach quiche with tangy tomato relish/chutney and fresh fruit salad (mango, watermelon, blackberry, pineapple). It was served on the new J class serving tray complete with appropriately sized metal utensils and cloth napkin.
Nuts and pretzels offered midway through the flight.
IFE- DigEplayer with movies, TV shows, music and podcasts was available.
Toilets- The front toilet is now exclusively for J class. FA now “locks” the toilet door from the outside so it appears that it’s always engaged. This was announced at the start but a number of PAX still tried to use it anyway. Again, they were promptly redirected. The only other person that used that toilet on my flight was the pilot.
Overall, I enjoyed the service but it’s obviously not as polished as the A330 PER-SYD J product. The A330 PER-SYD is only $210 more ( $1399 vs $1189) but you get a proper J class cabin, reclinable leather seats and 3 course meal. I will probably wait until the refurbishments are done on the E190 before flying J class again on it. Hope this is useful for others wanting to try E190 J class!
