Westfield XS card

Probably does not fit into their business model of

1. One EFTPOS transaction per card instead of multiple transactions, which probably earns them fees.
2. Gift cards expiring unused !!! (A company I know of has a profit centre on expired gift cards)

I don't understand why they would care if you were using the EFTPOS card to pay a $500 bill by EFTPOS at the PO or if you were buying $500 worth of stamps at the PO?

It wouldn't be hard to shut this down if they wanted to, I can think of a couple of solutions off the top of my head.

Clearly to reduce or avoid fraud.

If you arent doing this then you shouldnt have a problem.

Some of the concierge chicks are pretty cute too ;)

Yeah, I've had my DL/Address/Phone Number taken down for almost every purchase I've made.

Meh.

Terms & Conditions - Westfield XS Gift Card

These conditions apply to use of the Westfield XS Gift Card (gift card), issued by Westfield Gift Cards Pty Limited ACN 131 171 663 as Trustee of the Westfield Gift Card Trust (we, us, our). Westfield may, in its complete discretion, refuse to sell gift cards to any person at any time for any reason. Purchasing or using the gift card means that you accept these conditions.
If you let another person use your gift card, you must tell them that they will be bound by these conditions. NSW law applies to this agreement. By entering into this agreement you unconditionally submit to the jurisdiction of the courts of NSW. An administration charge is payable on first issue of a gift card.

1. Card may be used to purchase goods or services at retailers in Australia with “EFTPOS” facilities who accept the card or online at westfield.com.au, when the gift card has enough unused value to make the purchase. Some retailers may choose not to accept the gift card.

2. Gift cards will be activated 24-36 hrs after purchase, cannot be redeemed for cash, reloaded, returned for a refund, have their balances consolidated to a new gift card, or be replaced after expiry and are not legal tender, account cards, credit or debit cards or securities.

3. Keep your gift card secure - anyone holding the gift card can use its value to make purchases. If your gift card is lost or stolen, or you suspect an unauthorised transaction, immediately report this by calling 1300 78 40 50. We may be able to stop gift card value being used, but require the card number, original balance and expiry date.

4. We may replace a faulty, lost or stolen gift card. Any replacement gift card will have the same unused value (at the time of replacement) and expiry date. Apply at the Concierge Desk at any Westfield in Australia or call 1300 78 40 50. You must present the original receipt and reference number (located on the back of the gift card). Make a record of the reference number and keep separate from your receipt. Gift cards will be void if they are defaced, mutilated, altered or tampered with in any way. We may subject gift cards to verification and security checks in our absolute discretion.

5. If you have a query or complaint about the gift card, please raise it through any of our contact channels. We are not liable for the availability, quality or fitness for purpose of any goods or services purchased with the gift card. Any dispute about goods or services purchased with the gift card must be resolved with the supplier. Except for rights which cannot be excluded, any conditions or warranties implied or imposed by legislation or otherwise are excluded from these conditions of use. To the extent permitted by law, our liability is limited to replacing faulty gift cards.

6. If you think there has been a mistaken transaction on your gift card contact the store where the mistake was made.

7. Our contact channels are calls to 1300 78 40 50, online at westfield.com.au/giftcards or the Concierge Desk in any Westfield shopping centre in Australia.

8. We may cancel any gift card, or the gift card scheme, for any reason at any time without notice. If so, we may either provide a refund or a replacement gift card of equivalent value unless we reasonably suspect fraud in relation to a gift card. The gift card remains our property.

9. We can vary or replace these conditions from time to time (including to introduce new fees) by publishing a notice in a newspaper circulating throughout Australia at least 30 days before the change. The current version of these conditions is available through our contact channels.

IMPORTANT: – EXPIRY DATE: THIS CARD WILL EXPIRE ONE YEAR AFTER THE DATE OF ISSUE – SOME MERCHANTS MAY CHOOSE NOT TO ACCEPT THE GIFT CARD

Gift cards are valid for one year from the Date of Issue. After the gift card has expired, it is no longer valid. All transactions will be declined. Unused value will not be refunded and will become our property.

I think it's pretty well known that vouchers/gift cards have been a cash cow for many companies for years... but purposely targeting a group that is making use of 100% of their gift card balance seems a bit shady... Wouldn't surprise me though.

My guess is it probably does not with their business model

1. One EFTPOS transaction instead of many, thereby reducing the fees they may be earning per transaction
2. Gift cards expiring. (I know of a US company that had this as a profit centre)
3. No scope of earning interest on client funds till the time it has not been used.

Nothing in that to suggest that paying bills is not acceptable. The right of refusal to entertain some one does allow them to refuse a sale

IANAL but looking at these, it seems short of leaning on Australia Post to stop accepting these, or cancelling the product, there's a 30 day window before any changes made to counter the "unintended 100% usage" take effect.

The first para of the T&C says they may, in its complete discretion, refuse to sell gift cards to any person at any time for any reason. Purchasing or using the gift card means that you accept these conditions.

Now, that's fair enough, but I would think that if they deny selling to someone because noteastpark isn't making enough profit, then that isn't really good enough. They would really have to either put something explicit in their T&C, or have a nudge to OzPole about accepting excess cards. I can't see the latter being particularly happy about losing legitimate business, and if noteastpark is seriously trying to stop legitimate customers from making legitimate purchases or paying legitimate bills, then they are making their own product less attractive.

Highlighting the fact that people are *shock horror* spending 100% of the value of the card rather than losing it or letting credit expire is again, not good for business.

I also note that when I go to one of their sprawling establishments I always go shopping, often for whatever Woolworths or Big W has as a deal on their own reward scheme.

Just dont post this on ozbargains or whingpool. That will be the end of this, mark my words!

no doubt this thread has sparked the "investigation".

these things have been out for like over 2 years I think.

also what is there to investigate? they arent loosing money, we are paying $4.95 for them wth?! westfield are a big jack if they stop this.

I would hate it for "this thread" to get all the blame. Someone here was investigated and "warned off" long before this thread came into being.
Nevertheless I am sure that some of our actions have triggered some software somewhere.
Warnings about this did start appearing pretty early on in this thread as well.
Just stick by the terms and conditions as they are. Understand what they don't like and don't do it !! Please

Actually they are losing money. Whether they realise it or not is another matter.

No wonder my spoon selling business is going bananas! Selling so good. -.-
Like with all things read find use keep quiet

Just been browsing, and AFF is actually the top hit for a search linking two card types. However, I found this - a letter to a Treasury review of gift cards. Note the last sentence in the second para. Anyone spotted these things there?
