Westpac Singapore KrisFlyer Credit Card

This is definitely covered. It is in the T&Cs. I made a claim on a F Class redemption to ZRH in January last year. Insurance paid out cash for the equivalent value of a F seat. Included with my claim I printed a screen shot of an F booking for the day I had to cancel.

Interesting, so you "gained" $10-20k?

The figure was at the lower end of that range.

Not sure about the 'gained' feeling. It just went towards 'losing less' in the scheme of why the trip was cancelled. Like joeymelb I would rather have not had the reason to make the claim in the first place.

True, I didn't mean to be insensitive. Anything which requires a trip to be cancelled can't be a good thing.

At least WBC/Zurich covered you.

I didn't take it as insensitive. Fortunately for me the flood was all 'business' related.

Wow crazy story there from joey, good work WBC/SIA on their choice of travel ins provider for the cards

I too was wondering about redemption flights where the taxes are paid with the CC, much appreciated for the answer on the topic ;)

The big question on travel insurance is when you do points redemption flights and just pay the levies on your credit card are you covered?

I can probably answer the question. In order to claim travel insurance on a redemption flights, it must fits the following condition:
  • The traveler must prove that ALL the points used for redemption is accumulated via the credit card
    • You will need to have nearly all the past Credit Statements showing the points earned;
    • You must provide all past SQ KF Statements on the points accumulation;
    • A proof that you paid the taxes and charges via the credit card;
    • Must be a SQ flight. No *A partner redemption. (I can't find this rule in the T&C PDF File, but I was told over the phone on this. Still need verification.)
  • Fill out pages after pages of forms with the above attachment and wait at least 2 months for reimbursement.
  • In short: TOO HARD!!!

I have a MEL-SIN redemption ticket booked, and I recently (last week) clarified this with Zurich. I have since taken out RACV Travel Insurance because I don't believe I will be in the right state of mind to handle all the additional paperwork.

Quote from T&C PDF Page 14:

“use of the cardholder’s eligible credit card account” means that the total value (i.e. including but not limited to money and/or frequent flyer points and/or staff discounts) of the return overseas travel ticket (but not taxes, airport or travel agent charges) was obtained for your journey by one or a combination of the following methods:

* was paid for being charged to a cardholder’s eligible

* credit card account; and/or

* the cardholder is a current Singapore Airlines Westpac Platinum cardholder and a member of the KrisFlyer Programme and has redeemed their frequent flyer points earned on the cardholder’s eligible credit card account to obtain your return overseas travel ticket.

End Quote.

Interesting about the conditions on that. I wouldn't think it would be too much bother to prove the points were earned with the CC. There is a way to display all of this with the SIA/KF website and would be a matter of adding up all the CC earned points to show you had enough in your account to make the flight (provided you didnt spend them all and then earn more points with regular tickets that gave you enough points to take another flight between times, this isnt a large issue for me, others it might get complex). Unsure if you would be able to get a printed/PDF version of this without having to wait for a mailed out KF statement. Perhaps a call to customer service could help with this?
You can also access statements/PDF on the WBC website of CC statements to show this (i have used in the past for the purchase insurence cover).

Phew..maybe you are right in it being too much, but I guess that is the $20k+ question some people will need to answer if they get into trouble O/S

I have an annual multi trip policy, which covers almost everything (it does cover skiing). The main thing to note is that I must return to Australia at least every 90 days, which I easily do.

From a personal perspective I don't trust myself (or the insurer?) to be 100% covered by CC insurance. I have several credit cards, so it is likely I would pay for something on the wrong card for a better points earn or lower fees, etc... But then any insurance claim relating to that spend would be invalid because I paid on the wrong card.

YMMV.

Having 3 sources of Kris points makes those rules too tough for me plus we also do heaps of redemption flights with QF.
As a result I will hold Chubb as my surest insurance.

Well, my most recent experience showed me that I definitely can't think in a straight line when faced with a critical situation. Imagine rushing into Emergency Room with your loved one, and get told by cardiologist that there was a high probably that the patient's heart could cease functioning within the 3-Day danger period. Then the hospital account lady requests (nicely of course) a CC imprint + THB50,000 deposit before they will transfer the patient to operating theater?

All I remembered for my travel insurance claim was logging into my iPad, go into GoogleDoc and email what I had to the hospital accounts department. Then receive a phone call from International SOS (acting on behalf of Zurich) to email them the same thing again. (Oh, we had our latest doctors' medical report to state that we have no Pre-Existing conditions... that made things even easier in hindsight.)

Looking back, I definitely will not have the strength to chase up SIA KF people to get all those statements and sort out (or debate/argue) the difference between that the points I used are earned via CC not actual flights accruals.

Note: I am Chinese born in the Year of Dragon, extremely superstitious... I was told by fortunate teller to be extremely careful on travel this year. I actually "prepared" everything, even did our Will before we left Australia. I am now even more superstitious.... :-(

is anyone keeping krisflyer platinum card with the introduction of the altitude black card that also has travel insurance?

Yes the co-branded card continues to work because Westpac need SQ approval to screw around with it. The Amex part of the KrisFlyer still works ok.

Yes!

Although the earning points seem really good

[h=4]Rewards points earned per $1 spent on eligible purchases:[/h]
  • 1.25 points - Altitude Black World MasterCard[SUP]®[/SUP] (Australian Merchants)
  • 3 points - Altitude Black World MasterCard (Overseas Merchants)
  • 3 points - Altitude Black American Express Card (Australian Merchants and Overseas Merchants).

From memory all these are halved when converting to Velocity for example ?

So it's really 1.5 points per $1 for Amex and 0.625 for Mastercard ?

My points from 4th of May 2014 have not made it across to SQ. Had one fruitful discussion with Westpac where they at first passed me off to SQ who flicked me back to Westpac. After going through all the details again they told me I had to wait at least 14 days for the points to go across. Each month they have appeared within 2 days of my statement date in the past. Anyone else having any issues with a delay ?
