What cheeses me off

The IPhone. It doesn’t list Apps on phone in alphabetical order so you have to remember what the icon looks like. I reckon each time it’s a multiple scroll through to find the right one.
Settings" → "General" → "Transfer or Reset iPhone" → "Reset" → "Reset Home Screen Layout"

will place default packaged apps first and then everything else in alphabetical order.

Easy solution. Just scroll down on front screen and start typing the name of the app in the search box

but this is when trying to turn mobile data on or off. I've edited my first post as I wasn't clear.

If you're trying to switch mobile data on or off, you can slide down from the top right hand corner, and tap this button.

I think that turns it on or off and which is handy to know but I'm looking at switching on mobile data (or off ) for individual apps so some will be on and some will be off. Needed for overseas when you don't want random apps eating your data plan. So if you want to turn mobile data on for a particular app, the list of Apps in settings seems random not alpha so you have to just keep searching.

Then, similar to what others have said, it's probably easiest to pull down in the settings app to reveal the search bar, and then just start typing the app you're looking for.

But that doesn't allow you to turn on mobile data for that app. The message when trying to access that app if mobile data has been turned off for it, just pings you to the mobile data settings list which is where all the apps are presented, not just the one you want to turn on.

Though I am typing in the exact same address as my computer has for the log in page.
That will only work if you are connected to the specific wifi network. You need to connect to that first via settings wifi then when wifi connection is showing it should auto connect to the login page via safari.

It is always connected via the settings but only have access by the log in page. You can only have 1 device online at any one time. So via the dedicated page you click stop on your computer then start on your phone except that page is the one coming up with the stupid message.
However I have found if I open another page from my book marks and type the correct info over it's address then it will connect. My devices have always had a mind of their own.
When I first set the settings to the guest wifi but that doesn't happen on subsequent visits even if you exit and re connect.

The lack of a comprehensive manual for the iPhone really cheeses me off. The World Wide Web does not count as a comprehensive manual.

You may or may not think this comprehensive.

I save it to the books app so I can refer to it - you know, "if all else fails, read the instructions"

Edit - this isn't just to find the app, but in the mobile data settings where you turn mobile data on or off.
Mmmm... I have a Samsung @Pushka and happy to say no issues with Apps, all in alphabetical order!
The iPhone users in the family hang it on me #Samsung

The apps are listed in order of data consumed over mobile network, and then in alphabetical order for apps you have not used over mobile netwok (i.e. zero data). If you don't mind losing your statistics*, just scroll to the bottom of the mobile data screen and press "Reset Statistics", The apps will now be listed in alphabetical order.

* call time in current period, and mobile data in current period & current period roaming + the amount of mobile data each app has used since last reset
