What cheeses me off

Anyone know who won last IPL? Anyone know who won this years fried chicken slog fest in Australia? Or is that not really the point: is it more just an immediate sugar fix that is quickly forgotten when moving onto the next ‘maximum’, sponsored of course by obesity and lolly water.

It started off fine. Just an aside for a bit. A change. CAA scoffed at it then realised the crowds loved it. In the beginning. So the next year they made players wear shirts with funny nicknames and generally coughised it. The next year they played way too many games. Crowd got bored and tv numbers slumped. This year it was a shortened season. But yes. It’s a mess and a boring one at that. States like SA had to drop their name for the team - red backs. Now I don’t know which team I’m watching because they all play swappy teams so there’s no point in local allegiance as it doesn’t exist.

I've watched less than five BBL games and two of those were in person. One of the others just happened to be this years final where the game was decided in about 5 overs because of some big hitting. So I know that Hurricanes won the BBL this year but I don't remember who they beat or who did that hitting. No sport is less about the sport and more about marketing than franchise cricket. Not my bag.

So on the sport theme. The AFL and its money grab through the manner in which the games are not going to be shown live this year. Don't know what's happening in the other states but today, Adelaide Crows play at 12.50pm at the MCG. There is no free to air play of the game and it's delayed until 2.30pm. And then Port Power. They play at 2.30pm I think. That match will only be shown at 5.30pm on 7 mate. Try keeping any of those games secret unless you turn off all tv and radio. I feel so sorry for those fans who simply cannot afford to pay for Kayo. There is a cost of living crisis, for many footy is their one joy in life and they are being screwed by an AFL who don't pay taxes, and play their players fortunes.

Everyone has a passion. For some it's their footy team. For others it's travel. Golf. Gardening. Cooking and so on. Not terrible at all. And for the Port Adelaide fans they are passionate. And many of them are doing it tough as it's that kind of demographic.

I think you might think the comment you're replying to was a tad glib.

Fact is, sport is a passion amongst a  lot of people in Australia; we're a sport mad nation. It's rugby in QLD and NSW, and AFL in VIC, SA and probably TAS (and likely WA). I don't think we've got to the same degrees as football (soccer) in UK or any Spanish-spreaking countries (with riots and occasional referees or players suddenly disappearing), but the passion is there.

And for many Australians, it's an undeniable right as much as free speech and a fair go. I'm not suggesting people would trade away their first born child (one of their real life joys) for tickets to the Grand Final, but there are several who are certainly very p***** off that they can't watch the game free of charge like in the old days (and without being poached by betting corporation ads).

Remember how the NRL was one of the first bodies to be granted liberties from COVID restrictions? Vlandys used this very argument as a reason why football should proceed back as normal (or as normal as possible).

Edit: I’m not arguing with what is being said, here, but I do find it sad that there are some in this situation. Maybe that’s just me.

Do you follow sports (or play sports)? If not, you probably don't get the fever. Mind, neither do I (I only attempt to understand it).

Saying something is "your one joy in life" is probably more hyperbole than anything, otherwise if it were earnestly true then yes it may point to other circumstances in that person's life.

All football and sport in Australia has always been chasing for $. I don't know exactly when they started detaching seriously from free to air in favour of paid services, e.g. Foxtel was the first one, but certainly the footballs have been always harping on about protecting the financial viability of their game.

And of course that also means player salaries will have to be seriously high, too (debates have been on and on and on about this even before free to air loss of rights).

This week it kicked in for all South Australians.

What makes it worse is that the AFL have seriously partnered with betting agencies. I loathe betting amd it's insidiously working its way into our lives and it's at the stage where son does not feel comfortable watching the footy with his son. He has kayo. Yet the AFL take the high moral ground on other matters that would be best left for people to decide for themselves. And ignoring other more important issues.

One of the things that totally perplexed me when I moved to Melbourne years ago. The thought that ran through my mind often was "for heavens sake get a life "

Nothing but aimless drivel and gossip about obscenely paid guys running around an oval who's behaviour off the field was very often an absolute disgrace.

3 month dinner catch up with a group. Before the approx month everyone is asked their preferred or unavailable date. This time it was Feb or April. March is chaos in SA so ignored. There was one date we didn’t want to go. But everyone else was fine so we lucked out. We changed arrangements. It involves overseas travel and last minute chores etc. So we expected we should go. So today we got the message about location. And almost immediately afterwards two people backed out because of a 70th party . They were the key reason why our preferred date wasn’t ok in the first place as they couldn’t go then, and now, they still can’t go.

Right now not sure of our plans. It’s really expensive too. When our least wanted date was selected I said to the host please pencil us in but we might be a last minute drop out. Decisions decisions.
