What I ate today - the food thread

That would be a serious mission :) back home tomorrow. There is easily a months worth of eating and drinking though. It's now an annual event for us - the enjoyable challenge is picking which menus to do when you only have a couple of days.

Ah, was hoping there might be a chance for our paths to cross, but not this time. Thanks for the link. Was tempted to signup for the AMEX offer but as I'm travelling not too confident of entering credit card details on unfamiliar websites. Will still check out restaurants when I return to Auckland twice over the next week.

We had a great lunch at Barangaroo in Sydney today - drinking vermouth, eating plenty and finally rousing from the table just as the sun was setting and the warmth left the day.

Following a tasting of German wines, one of our companions was craving pizza...

Gluten free Margherita. Not as cheesy as my last pizza! And table companions refused to try it. (They already know the disappointment to come) I can say this was less cardboard-y; but too soggy!

Tonight we shared a punchbowl (there's fruit in it - so it's a food right? :D )

And I had salad niçoise (no disappointment)

Bought 2 half legs of lamb yesterday.

Cut off the calf and sliced it and we fried that last night. Not as tender as I had hoped but still ok. Left some meat on bone and wife boiled that this morning for nearly 4 hours until the meat started falling off the bone and then added rice. Add lemon and salt when served and tasted about as good as I've ever eaten.

Was going to make vegetable soup with the other half lamb leg bone but think more rice soup on Wednesday.

Frying lamb leg isn't going to produce tender JohnK.

Boil. I really dislike the word 'boil' when it comes to cooking meat. Obviously it works though.

I have had success in the past frying lamb leg. Anyway not many options yesterday other than frying and we were hungry.

Not sure what else you can use other than boil. Slow cook in water? Braising?

Braise? Slow cook? Sounds nicer :p. Process is the same though.

Anyone thought of an oven or BBQ?
No room in the already full studio apartment. The fried lamb leg was still quite nice and for ~$12 for the half leg of lamb + some rice and some vegetable oil fed 2 and half people for 2 dinners. Not bad hey?

Except boiled lamb and white rice is not exactly a balanced meal!

Part of our delicious lunch - gnocchi with agro dolce, oyster mushrooms and sea parsley.

Currently discussing what choice to make at a Tassie lavender farm.

Ended up with this. Lavender flavor too strong for me but hubby liked it.

Our son and daughter-in-law took us out for dinner on Saturday night at an Indian Restaurant. We had Mutter Mushroom, Chicken Tikka, Dhaba Chicken -with fenugreek, Lamb Palak - with pureed spinach, Garlic Naan, Tandoori Parantha & Basmati Rice.

My daughter-in-law had missed my wifes' birthday when visiting her parents in KL so, as a surprise, she had the restaurant bring out some cupcakes she had made - flavoured with Rose Water & Pistachio.

Port Arthur Lavender Cafe for lunch (before the above lavender ice-cream)

Wasn't expecting fried salmon but hubby was happy. He loved the chunky chips.

Steak sandwich was very tender.

Lunch with friends at their house - steak, onion and salad with home made mayo:

Paired with a nice Bordeaux Red that I brought along

Dessert was really for the kids

with their own passionfruit picked fresh off the vines

but we added some ice cream after the kids had eaten theirs (which was gone in seconds) and lashings of passionfruit. We savoured ours...

Glad you had a good meal at the Fox and Hounds, Denali. We stayed there in April last year and I had one of the most ordinary meals I've ever had. It was meant to be rice with a spicy/chilli sauce. It was without any exageration, a bowl of boiled white rice with a sweet chilli sauce poured over the top. I'm sure it was from a $1 bottle that you can buy in any supermarket........

I can't remember what my better half had, but she didn't have any complaints, the beer was good as well and the room was alright as well, so the stay wasn't a complete fiasco!
