What I ate today - the food thread

Going to Southern Vales winery today. A beautiful sunny day. Hope to have some rivalry happening here later.

I had a bottle of red for dinner with takeaway pizza - is that good????:)
Actually the pizza was good - for CBR people from Arte Pizza in Kingston - wood fired and all.

I've seen that place as I was driving past, didn't think too much about it as we tend to have pizza with friends and eat in the restuarant.
I'll have to try it! My favourites in that area are Le Rendezvous at Manuka and Bentham St Pizza at the Yarralumla shops. Ate once at Locale at the Deakin shops, but they stopped doing byo, so we won't go back there.

Lunch yesterday was at Brindabella Hills Winery, much to recommend them. http://brindabellahills.com.au/vineyard_cafe We had quite a mixture and nothing disappointed.

I''ve eaten at Rendezvous once and that was enough. Wasn't impressed at all. Maybe it was a bad night. We sometimes walk down to La Capanna at Kingston for a pizza at lunch. They do a very nice antipasto plate which we follow up with a pizza. We tend to stick to Kingston and Manuka areas so we don't need to drive.
Arte Pizza is quite odd (feels like it's someone's back yard) but they do a proper thin Italian crust pizza in a wood fired oven. They were very busy and the pizzas were pretty good.

I love the large calzone at La Capanna. Have half at dinner then pack the remainder for lunch the next day!

Expanding the region a bit - Cork St Café in Gundaroo - magnificent pizzas before / after / during touring a few wineries.

Agreed, Le Rendezvous can be a bit hit and miss, and admittedly we haven't been there since my mum died, her favourite was the ham and pinapple with extra pineapple!

La Capanna sounds good, have to try that as well. Imo really good pizza places are a bit thin out in Tuggers.

While Mrs WF is visiting the grand-children, I have have been evil (mostly in the kitchen). We don't have Sunday shopping in the nearby Woolies/Coles, so visiting them half an hour before closing on Saturday results in the a number of 50% off specials in the deli section.

Experiments:
1. Salt and pepper calamari rings with a very fruity sauvignon blanc. Easier than I thought. Recipe was correct - don't overcook
2. Sauted barramundi with chips and a cucumber (Greek style) salad. I didn't overcook like I have been prone to do.
3. Entertaining a transplanted South African couple - home made pizza (yes with pizza stone in the oven) with a cos lettuce salad (mainly from the garden) and a "Bushvine" pinotage courtesy of the JNB dutyfree. Perhaps not as robust as the WA shiraz, but still they considered it a nice drop. Note: Keep your mind on what you are doing when mixing the dough - even if you have been doing it for years... Still was OK and better than the made up rounds at the grocery.
4. Thinking about the SB that was left over, a shrimp linguine alfredo (would a fred make any other kind?) Alas the recipes were all for four people and my "reduction" was a bit "fly by the seat of the pants" so perhaps a bit more liquid than intended, but with all that cream and parmesan, who would notice. My afternoon nap, aided by the arrival of the normal southwestern winter rain showers, was rather longer than intended.:-| Dinner that day is/will be minimal.
5. Then there is the butter chicken that came forth from a "spice package" after noting that my South Asian cookbook does not recognize such a dish. A little help from the internet allowed some liberties in the addition of spices... Probably better after a couple of days in the fridge to allow a proper marination.

All in a normal bachelor week...

But I am wandering
