What I ate today - the food thread

They are silkworm pupae - the metamorphosis stage between the larva (feeding stage) and moth (reproducing stage). The gut is cleared by the larva prior to pupation.

When they are crispy fried that have a semi crunchy texture on the outside and a little softer inside. A little sort of nutty chicken flavour but very difficult to describe. They also serve them soft cooked but I don't care for them cooked that way.

Sound interesting but am not sure I could like such a thing. Maybe? I have led such a sheltered life!

Sorry for another China post but it is Golden Week here and the dinner invites and wonderful hospitality of our local friends just continues. The food as usual excellent.

The Moutai took its toll though.

And no... We did not drink the 2.5lts bottle. It was in a leather bound presentation case and was a gift from our host to one of his guests.

Woodyren, from me at least, please never seek forgiveness for posting such great stuff - you appear to be well established there and you manage to convey the pleasure of the entire situation/food package very well. I at least really appreciate this :)

[I am finally able to catch up on some of my backlog of photos.]

Those who have been to Spain, more recently than 42 years ago like us, will know about the "Menu del Dia". Basically a big lunch of 2 -3 courses and extras for about 1/2 of what it would cost at night.

This was the dearest one we had so far - in Zaragoza. It cost just Euro 13.70 each. We had 3 courses, bread, plus a soft drink and coffee for my wife and a red wine and beer for me.

Primeros

Soup with rice, Langoustine, squid rings etc

Potato slices with egg, the small things on top are baby eels.

The choices on the menu. The sharp eyed will notice that this is a weekend menu. I have to admit that a lot of choices are done by a coin toss.

Pintxos in San Sebastian. 5 of them plus a couple of glasses of local wine sets you back about €13......

I’m jealous. I adore Pintxos and couldn’t get over all the choices. I’ve been trying to get Mr ALH to take me back!

We are currently in Bilbao and though I haven't tried as many, because my wife has picked a tummy bug, I think the San Sebastian ones were better. Admittedly 4 of the places we tried in SS were recommended by the owner of the Pensione we stayed in, so local knowledge might help.

It’s only 844 km from our front door to San Sebastian @GPH :):D:p

Last dinner for this China trip. Tomorrow we catch the bullet train to Tianjin and then the cruise ship home.

This place is a chain dumpling place.

They only have a out 6 varieties on their menu.

Reasonable price and always good quality.

Not sure if it is the dumplings or the tasty chili garlic and vinegar dipping sauce that I enjoy the most.... Yeah I do... It's the sauce.

We had no intention of being in Sale tonight, but we are and we ate at the Criterion Hotel, it was good, very good in fact. I had Blue Eyed Trevally and the boss had Sichuan Lamb and we shared new asparagus.

For pub bistro food, it could not be faulted, we would both happily return.
