What's your least favourite city in the world?

Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica are both like the French Riviera without the French. Sorry to offend any one on this.
My personal favorite worst place was Mumbai which stank of steamed **** and death......what a mixture!

LOL, I dont think Port Pirie qualifies as a city  but I agree, what a ****hole!

LA is taking a bash, but just up the road is Sacramento - hmmmm

I think CA would be the A Hole of the US

Least fav place I have been? Batan, now theres a dump where everyone is going to mug you, kill you or just generally be nasty to you, then theres the crims!

munitalP

Now I know what my mate is going through, given a few of you have mentioned Port Pirie.. he's been living/working there for the past few years. Poor guy! Gladly for him he has now landed a FIFO role based out of PER so can move back to civilisation.

As to my least favourite city? At this point in time I'd have to say Venice or Barcelona.

Venice, because it was confusing as heck trying to find our accommodation when following the map. Even the hotels we stopped in at to ask had no idea and they're supposed to know what's going on!

Barcelona, I was just generally unimpressed with and didn't feel as safe there as I had some other cities in Europe.

the talk of Barcelona safety and Venice reminded me of the shell game. I first saw this rip off in action in Venice I stood back and watched for a bit with my brother. But the gondola drivers quickly chased them away. The surprising thing was that for the 2 front people there were actually about another 6 associated people hanging around.

When I then saw the shell game in Barcelona I thought I try to help the young north American dude who was about to be taken, I said to lift up the 2 non choices. Next thing you know all hell breaks loose, there is one guy yelling at me to shut up and other dudes running everywhere. That was scarey!

The other place I've seen this game is budapest. They were amateurs. Watched these 3 guys at the top of a hill chatting away while climbing up the steps. 3 steps from the top suddenly one of them "wins" 50 euro. :lol
Nice try, fail.

Glad I'm not the only one who mentioned Barcelona in this thread! Always get slammed for it when I say I don't like the place lol. Not even the new W will make me want to go back (apart from maybe 1 night there out of curiosity - when I've ticked every other W off my list). I didn't feel unsafe or anything like that, perhaps just lucky. But the whole city simply felt underwhelming and gaudy (pun intended) all-round - was there for 3 days and was bored by the end of the first.

Now Madrid on the other hand....:cool:

Another one on my list that I forgot to mention in my initial post is Doha. Admittedly I only went there to check out the W and use up the LHR-Middle East sectors of my DONE (have already visited DXB and MCT), so I didn't have very many expectations. I think it'd be much nicer in 5-10 yrs, but at the moment it's really one big construction site.

Of ones I've been to, LA hands down, but Sydney is slowly rising in the P.O.S hall of fame.

Venice - Because its 'just for tourists'
Sydney - Same as above.

Lol ... so true.

Los Angeles - like Angeles mean something like Angel
but probably it's the people?, too awful?

Everywhere I have apartments has now been mentioned.
What about London and Paris as I have been accumulating pounds and euros?
Perth ,Sydney and Los Angeles have copped a mention but there are major parts of those places that are wonderful and with cheap world travel all I can say is try these places for yourself and dont be put off by this chat.
I love water views and shopping so maybe I am unusual.

London is fab, and has a huge Aussie expat population so you never feel like you left. There are lots of things I adore about Paris but like the French Riviera, Paris would be much nicer without its inhabitants.

I don't get the Melbourne vs Sydney rivalry. Both cities are sexy in their own way and I wouldn't mind living in either now that I've come to appreciate what a fun city Sydney is. Probably prefer Melbourne's weather, as Sydney is a little too warm for me even in winter - though the latter is probably more conducive for cruising around in a convertible with a pair of Silver DITAs.

Not unusual at all. Wasn't too bothered about water until recently upon discovering being near water makes summer a lot more bearable with the lower daily temperatures, hence have been looking up and down the bayside suburbs of Melbourne for another property. Buying houses is just a tad more involved than shoes or bags though. ;) Shopping, fashion, partying and trend-hunting - LA can't be beat.

Except by New York City.

LA is a big country town compared to NYC. In fact, Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, London, Rome, Shanghai and Hong Kong are big country towns compared to NYC. The only city that comes close (and very close indeed) is Tokyo.

As for Aussie expats, I tend to avoid them unless they are friends, work colleagues, or otherwise absolutely unavoidable. If I wanted to hang-out with Aussies, I'd move back to Sydney.

NYC is always a blast but after a week and a bit we are happy to go.
The theatre is special and yes it is a great big city.I even like Grand Central and the fact that it is safe to walk back to your hotel after the theatre.
It would be a bit rough to put New York on the least favourite list based on the severe weather in the height of summer and winter.

As with all cities, it can be different when you live there. I will concede that the weather is pretty crook at times, especially in August and late Jan/early Feb, but they have climate control inside. I found my first Parisian winter just as oppressive. I really miss Sydney weather...

Funny you mention that, after a few visits to Tokyo, I've said to a number of people that Tokyo would be as good as New York ..... if I spoke Japanese.

I do enjoy NYC, I may be a bit odd, but I find it the perfect place for a relaxing break, just get on the subway get out at a random stop and enjoy!

Having spent over 6 months there NYC is one of the best.Huge but so easy to get around.Love the food, the architecture and New Yorkers.

I don't mind LA as such, just don't stay in Los Angeles, head down the Coast to Orange County, etc and it's not to bad.
Worst would have to be Newark New Jersey, sure it's a cheaper option than across the river in NY, but the downside is a bleak industrial city with a constant stench from the oil refineries.

Bangkok, land of concrete slab construction and not in a good modern way either. It's like the entire city was built in 1973 from one set of blueprints for government offices. Strange that a country with stunning vernacular architecture goes out of it's way to emulate depressing metropolis' from the west of a bygone era.
