What's your least favourite city in the world?

As with all cities, it can be different when you live there. I will concede that the weather is pretty crook at times, especially in August and late Jan/early Feb, but they have climate control inside. I found my first Parisian winter just as oppressive. I really miss Sydney weather...

And yet again some say Sydney has an insidious humidity issue!!

My top three are:

Manila
Bangkok
Detroit

Special mention goes to:

Johannesburg is unpleasant, Singapore is stunningly dull...but not as dull as Cincinnati or Tulsa, Chihuahua is laden with grime, Paris would be fine if it were not for the French, and don't get me started on Nairobi.

I found Marrakech pretty underwhelmimg as well as most of the people in most places i visited in Egypt. If you took the monuments/history away its just everyone on the take to rip you off and i wouldn't touch it again with a ten foot pole and Cairo is as ugly and sprawling as they come...

Didn't get out of the hostel in Jo'burg as felt a bit unsafe and Livingstone in Zambia was a fairly coughpy town if you took Victoria Falls out of it...

Was only in LA back in 2003 for a bit, but no where near as bad/unsafe as some places i have been, although i reckon Inida will be an eye opener eventually!!!

Biggest dung heap in Australia, Meekatharra!!!! (town not a city)

I think Acapulco is high up there for me. Just the old bit is nice but the rest of the city...

I found it quite the opposite, as did a few of my friends who have also been. YMMV I guess

Ugh... I used to live in Hungary when I was 17/18 and Hungarians / Slovakians really hate each other. When I was last over that way in July, we were driving back to Budapest from Vienna and stopped in to "check out" Bratislava. It's the worst example of Eastern European communism, the people are just "odd" and we felt very weird just being there. We noticed also that because our rental car had HU number plates, we were pretty much profiled as being Hungarian so people were rude to us on the roads etc - all in all, it was just plain strange. The best part of Bratislava was the road leaving the city.

Interesting...! Also interesting to note that there is more Hungarians there, then Slovakians (IIRC). Well, that's what I read in the in-flight magazine (I think..!). Memory eludes me. Starting to get to the point now where I've hit so many cities in such a short time that some of them are becoming a blur :(

There was somewhere I went earlier this year that I didn't think much of.. will have to take a dig through my passport and try remember where!

Sorry for those that live in Carins, but out of all the cities I've been to (of which include most of Eurpoe/Middle East/Asia) it is the worst. Large cane toads hopping everywhere. Drunk individuals on the sides of the street. One of them I had to call an ambulance for as he wasn't responding to anyone. The hotels are cough (except if you go to Port Douglas), the city itself is best described as a shanty town but without the charm. I can't ever forgive myself for buying a ticket to that thing that takes you up to some mountaintop tourist trap where you are involuntarily held for 4 hours before it brings you down.

If I had to pick a larger city it would be definitely Mexico City. I haven't been there since 2001, but it looks really pretty landing. Its basically a large sprawling city in a large mountaintop valley. Its nickname is "City of Palaces", but I just saw ugly buildings, congested roads, and the worst smog outside of Los Angeles. Even the food was pretty awful. By the way Mexico City Airport is one of my least favourite airports as well!

Sorry for those that live in Carins,

having grown up in Cairns, I can only say it grows on you. I've done some amazing things there. Perhaps I should publish my Cairns. Of course, all towns ate different for youth.

I'm sorry I listed Cairns as my least favourite city, but remember I only was there for a week and I never lived there. I'm sure it has a lot of positives for people that live there, but for a tourist on a holiday it was not very nice.

No need to be sorry. Totally understand why it's your least favourite. Just noting why it is not a least favourite for me. I didn't like it to start but it grew on me. Most people who live their might feel the same.

I actually like BKK, looking to go and live there for a couple of years prior to moving back to Europe

Sent from my iPad using Aust Freq Fly app

Bangkok? What gives?

I don't think I saw it at it's best. I hated the traffic jams, the fumes from the cars, the humidity, the sleazy girly bars and the corruption in business. :-| I have friends who love Bangkok, but it just never clicked with me. I suppose I should really try to give it another go.

BKK is actually a nice city - once you get away from the tourist areas. Yeah it has it's sleaze, but so does Sydney, London, NY, LA etc. Pattaya on the other hand is sleaze all over the tourist traps - I hate the place.

BKK has the unfortunate ability to mix the poorest with the richest on the very same street - but that doesn't stop the Thai's from smiling and having a good time.

I actually find SGN dirtier - would *never* move there in a million years!

Only 5 weeks until back in Bangkok and cant wait.love the place.
