Least favorite...Hong Kong/Southern China...lived there for a few years before it became so polluted and that's a disappointment because it was a good place in the 80's and early 90's.

I've spent alot of time north of LA in the Santa Barbara area, as well as LA. LA is the kind of place if u know your way around its good, if u don't, then don't bother.

Are we talking Maryborough Qld or Maryborough Vic? Don't think the latter qualifies as city but then the former doesn't really either. I wouldn't give MBH my hideous Qld award, I would reserve that, without a doubt, for GLT, sandfly capital of Australia

Cheers

A few people have raised the question of what is a city. Coincidently I was looking into this a month or so ago, to assist a discussion that I ( a queenslander) and SWMBO (a South Ozzy) were having about the relative merits of Queensland and South Australia. (don't ask the outcome but note that I do still live in SA)

Anyway, I would share what Wikipedia has to say on the subject:

wikipedia said:
A city is a relatively large and permanent urban settlement.[1][2] Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law. For example, an article of incorporation approved by the local state legislature distinguishes a city government from a town in Massachusetts. In the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, a city is traditionally a settlement with a royal charter.[1] Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral, hence the official status of St David's as a city in the United Kingdom despite its population of 1,797 in 2001.

It says a bit more, and there are points to disagree about. But basically if it's called a city it is a city.

Why would you cross a city of your list just because someone else did not like it?

Because of the reason supplied, sounds like a nightmare. Seems to be a common complaint amongst people who've visited (was bad enough for Mum to shorten her stay from 4 days to 1 - and we both have similar tastes). Don't do art so it sounds like I'd have absolutely no reason to visit Florence (other than maybe spend a day at the Ferragamo flagship), or indeed spend any time in Italy outside the Quadrilatero della moda of Milan. Ooh and martinis at the Bulgari hotel... bliss.

Don't do that. Art lover or not. David is a must see. Just don't spend 3 days there. I had half a day and I enjoyed it. After 3 days that would change.

I had to Google to find out who or what David is.

Interesting, that distinction between town and city. Seems to vary a fair bit depending on where you are.

Everyone knows I love LA - I know it has its (many) detractors, but for me, it's the epitome of glamour, style and unashamed self-belief.

Just quietly, Keith, but I reckon any city in the world would be glamourous - in your high-flying company and champagne lifestyle!

Third world aside, I'm inclined to agree with LA. I've been there many times and never left the airport! It looks really crummy from the air - miles and miles of flat ugly with freeway hell.

But I had to recommend a place to stay there for my co-writer last year, and I said Santa Monica looked reasonable. She loved it and hated Hollywood.

We'll go there next year in a Mustang (I hope) fresh off Route 66. I'll let you know then.

Ok Los Angeles haters have a look from The Cove on jesseweinberg.com and look at the view for 13650 Marina Pointe because it is not Los Angeles airport and only 15 minutes up the street.

:cool::cool::cool:

Though I think if i lived in LA I'd save some money, head over to Playa del Rey just up the road (poor man's Marina del Rey) and enjoy the slightly cooler air up the hill.

Where in Hollywood was she? I've not been to Hollywood since... forever! Reminds me a little of Surfer's Paradise. West Hollywood is v different from Hollywood. ;)

When you're next in Santa Monica, stay at The Huntley (http://www.thehuntleyhotel.com/suites.php) - can't get more LA! Or at least go there for the coughtails.

beijing - spitting, pollution, spitting, really aggressive people trying to sell you something, spitting, no concept of a q for anything, did i mention the emphysemic expulsion of mucus.

Kolkatta and Los Angeles.

The only difference between the two is Los Angeles has running water.

Hey everyone.. New member first post

I'm not a frequent flyer and I have only been overseas once, but I can say that I reckon Kuta has to be my least favourite place..

Dirty and smelly and overpriced medical..

As it was my first time overseas, let alone a third world country. I cant see what the big hype about Bali is?? Given we didnt really venture from Kuta.. and getting sick as well didnt help either.. Ha!

Apparently SE Asia is all like this..

Dhaka, Bangladesh, gets my least favourite due to the open sewers that people poop into. Columbo, Sri Lanka, is the least interesting city I've ever been to.

FYI: Maryborough, QLD, has a very fine "country" golf course, good fishing in the Mary River and some stunning "queenslanders" (house type). Anyways, I'd argue that it's a big town, not a city.

It most certainly is not.

Except coughet. And Koh Samui. And Penang and maybe Langkawi. But that's it.

Welcome to AFF, by the way.

Not to mention holding the world record for pub crawls :D

I last visited China in 2008. The spitting seemed to be less prevalent then than 10 years ago - Olympic effect maybe? This was Shanghai though - and rather than spitting randomly on the streets, I noticed that a fair number of people kept a small plastic bag within easy reach for spitting into...:D

“It's not just a bag. It's a lifestyle. It's a statement. It summarizes who you are as a person. It's a reason for living.”

Sorry! Couldn't resist!

Langkawi would be a lot better if they banned Europeans but it is pretty easy to get away from them and there are no beggars etc, I am sure the Europeans probably say the same thing about Bali and Australians :D.
