What's your Uber experience?

I used it a couple of times when in Silicon Valley. If you aren't a in a rush and don't mind a little unpredictablily with getting to your destination, it's a great way to save money. I found that I always arrived prior to the worst case estimate. the other pick ups and drop-offs weren't very much out of the way at all.

I'd definitely use it again. I could see real value in it for airport pick ups too.

I used Uber recently for the first time from SYD T3 to my home. Clean SUV, limited conversation with driver, and cost was considerably cheaper than otherwise in cab.

What's UberPOOL? We are in Singapore and that is an option.
Car pool.
Used it the first time I used Uber.
Almost a year ago, heading from downtown LA to LAX. I had checked the app the evening before for a fare quote, then when I needed the ride, saw that it was in surge with 2-3 times the price. It was near the end of a large event at LACC, I figured that there would be other people heading towards the airport, so I selected UberPool.
Ended up with someone else waiting at the same place I was, then drove to a residential area about 5 minutes away to collect a 3rd person before going to LAX.

And soon you will be able to tip your Uber driver.

And not long after the option appears it will become expected. :(

Not for me it won't.

My neighbor had his credit card hacked by UBER after he used it last week in BNE. He got 10 new trips from Mumbai. Interesting that he's never been to India. Bank has cancelled the card. UBER apparently didn't;t really care.

I doubt it was Uber. I'd say his card details compromised and Uber is easy for thieves to enter details into as are all card not present transactions (or possibly even dodgy drivers using fake accounts to "earn" money).

Or his Uber account was compromised and someone then used his credentials on a different phone for free rides. Not exactly Uber's fault if people use weak passwords. Another scenario is his email account was compromised and used to reset his Uber password.

Beginning of the end. Tips are an insidious way to pay your workers less and to milk the customers a little more.

This sucks.

I do my best to reject all tips. I don't need the extra money, and if tips become expected, then sure as shoot, the rates for drivers will go down as well. Doubtless Uber will show calculations that tipping is better - after all, if it goes through the app they will have all the numbers - but it ain't.

The last thing we want is for Australia to follow the Yanks down the widening gap between rich and poor.

And what's the best they let the driver see your tip before they give you a star rating.

Agree it's poor.
As is the recent increase in Syd minimum fare to $9.

I have learnt to wait for their rating 1st before I give mine....childish but it will be "tit for tat"!

I've got no way of telling which passenger gave me which rating. If my rating goes down - currently at 4.95, so I must be doing something right - then I can't really tell which of the ten passengers I've driven that day rated me. I don't check my rating after every trip.

As for passengers, I automatically give everyone five stars unless they are a real d*ck. That's maybe twice out of thousands of pax.

I haven't got time for playing this sort of game.

For a passenger, taking one or two rides in a day, it's probably feasible.

And, just quietly, but if a driver rates you down for not giving a tip, then I thoroughly support giving him a low rating back. Drivers have a lot more to lose from getting even a four star rating than a passenger. I think it's a pernicious practice. Tips should be given by choice, rather than expected.

Tips are not part of the Australian culture, agree totally. It is only a way of exploiting employees or contractors (in this case drivers) and making the price look lower than it actually is.

Having said that, a culturally astute implementation of a tip function in Australia would simply be a question "Journey complete. Tip driver by rounding up to nearest dollar?" .. that has been a standard practice with taxis forever, or at least when cash was the predominant form of payment.

How do you know you've been rated, KPC? My app just shows me the 5 blank stars for the driver's rating.

The Uber app now shows your rating. I'm guessing if you know what it is, you can see if it drops.

Incidentally, I had my worst Uber ride today that I've had to date. No big drama, but the drivers driving skills left a lot to be desired (he weaved down the road, but I think it was just unusual driving rather than drunk or medicated) and as a CNS driver, he had no idea that the DT porte cochere is not on the esplanade! He didn't fair well, I'm afraid.
