I lived and worked in a rather mysterious and isolated place from the late 90's - a group of 800 islands which had been closed off to the outside world for some 50 years following WWII. Foreign travellers have only recently been permitted to visit this particular 'archipelago' again, and its still for the most part unexplored. Won't name which particular group of islands, should be easily worked out for the sleuths :)

Anyway, after spending an important and significant period of my working life there, "Archipelago" took on a new meaning for me.

And "Sting" is?

Sting is a nickname given to him by a fellow musician, and it stuck.

"Bandleader Gordon Solomon thought he looked like a bee, which prompted the name "Sting".[SUP][14][/SUP] In the 1985 documentary Bring on the Night a journalist called him Gordon, to which he replied, "My children call me Sting, my mother calls me Sting, who is this Gordon character?"[SUP][15

Mr_Orange - invented when I was a mere teenager and used to mountain bike. Having bought a second hand Trek, all I really wanted was an Orange mountain bike (the brand not the colour). I used to have a black t-shirt that said, "God Rides Orange". I never owned one.

The handle then got much cooler following the release of Reservoir Dogs.

I have a variation on this theme when this handle is not available, as has been the case on a couple of other fora I use.

Ryo - a simple name I chose when shops want a name for ordering coffee or juice to keep some anonymity.
Bay - my surname - also shortened

WannaFlyNow......doesn't really need an explanation....unless you really can't work it out...

This stumped me ... I was thinking of places in the Arctic Sea! But then, obviously somewhere much closer to hand. Nice.

Mine is my handle from years gone by when I played computer games, including in competitions.

When I created it at the time, I just needed a new handle and so something just came to mind, then as you kind of do with other gamers, you shorten it a bit and maybe replace a letter with a number.

Just like my surname, hardly anyone spells my handle correctly (unless they copy and paste).

I think there have been many topics like this before, though the last of these is likely too old to repost in.

There was me thinking you might have been Russian - Anatoly....

There was me thinking you might have been Russian - Anatoly....

I think part of that did come to mind when I conceived that name. I used to play chess for my high school team, and yes Antoly Karpov isn't the best chess player in history, nor did I particularly idolise him or his style or anything, but that did kind of pop up at the time.

I think 'Anatolia' also came to mind as I was between playing Age of Empires (and Age of Empires II) at the time.

Sometimes something just pops up and you go with it.

Gary because I'm too old for all this internet nickname bollocks and feel the net should be a friendlier place - _S because the Internet can be a nasty place full of scary people

Turbo- as the legacy of a divorce i ended up with a small Ford Festiva (the non kids car) with a fake Calais turbo badge on the back so 'Turbo' became a regular nickname among the boys..G being the initial of my name

"Significance" has been my internet name since forever - or anyway, some time in the 1990s. It was just a word that came to mind when I was setting up an account somewhere back then, but using it gives me a continuity of identity across platforms. Since the internet is in some ways a less friendly place than it was back in the 90s and anonymity (or pseudonomity) is less trusted, I do use my full name these days in some contexts (such as my Twitter account), but doing so changes what I can talk about. As a government employee, I can't talk about politics under my own name, and as a private person, I usually won't talk about my emotional life under my own name. My friends know who I am when I post as "significance".

It is lonely at the top. Talk away Tony, we won't tell anyone. ;)

p.s. Perhaps we could start a cycling thread.

Pretty sure its not Tony, the foot went nowhere near the mouth anywhere in that post.

On another note, I see the AFF newsletter has sparked interest in this thread. Good stuff!

A truly unbelievable yet original reason.... Childhood nickname. Who would've thought?!
