Worse than feet on bulkheads

Have any AFF members been tempted to take their shoes and socks off on a plane

Leaving aside the total wind-up, I'm sure many AFF members have slipped their clogs off and draped their toes over their travel companions, multiple times for multiple miles......what is your point?

Who has or has not offended others is not the theme of the thread. I find it's an observation by some travellers, that others who do not understand their actions offend and will continue to offend, albeit (perhaps) unwittingly. Would a steel cap to the temple be more direct and better suited?

Attempting to excuse unsociable actions by misdirected shaming is never an answer to a problem.......and disgusting personal hygiene in a cramped sardine tin is a problem regardless of whether one chooses to acknowledge it or not.

Your question is shallow, which can be countered by a multitude of subsequent questions, but may I suggest, that level of response is undeserved by the question posed?

For the record, I'm not totally against someone slipping their shoes off in flight. I'm against someone slipping their shoes off with or without the knowledge they offend (and often stink) and then expecting everyone to accept they can place said feet in any crevice or platform on the aircraft.

The words that spring to mind are.......selfish, disgusting, unhygienic and bogan. If those words don't describe ones attributes, then don't partake in those behaviours. Seems fairly simple to me.

Have any AFF members been tempted to take their shoes and socks off on a plane, and try to find somewhere totally outlandish to put them, take a photo and post it here to see the sort of reaction they get? :-)

The new planking ?

Basic manners out the window. Selfish is the key word.

Nope, some 18ish chick from Canada traveling with her sister. Usually I'm more assertive but didn't want 5 hours of awkward travel. She eventually took them down but never put her shoes on.
EDIT: Her feet were on her own tray table in her middle seat next to my aisle seat. And it was the girl next to me on the plane, not a girl on a plane next to our plane.
EDIT 2: Taking the pics without her being aware was pretty easy, since she was not aware that other humans outside her FB feed actually exist.
EDIT 3: Wow, this is really blowing up! Thanks, kind strangers, for the gold insults.

By the look of "edit 3", the poster has copped some criticism.......for what? Highlighting that this 'lady" belongs in a gutter rather than on a plane? Look at the state of her feet and how close they are to the table from which the poster will presumable eat at some point during the flight. Next time we all travel, remember that photo and remind yourself that a similar slovenly pig may have had your seat during the prior sector!

I always take my shoes off on long haul flights, without fail. Guess im a feral bogan

Funny thing is that in a number of cultures it is not only acceptable to remove shoes in many circumstances, but considered impolite not to. However usually they involve socks or slippers being worn instead of shoes.

I am ok with feet on bulkheads - and touching seats when someone has the good fortune to have 3 or 4 economy seats to themselves and can lay across them -with socks on (not with bare feet and definitely not with shoes on) not so much with bare feet on tray tables or pressing call buttons on the ceiling!

Whilst some of the comments on here are almost hysterical (which is why I made the flippant remark you quoted) I'd like to think most people recognise that simply removing shoes (with socks on) is not terribly offensive - particularly if they are safely tucked underneath the seat in front.

I also take my shoes off but I put clean socks on and I don't leave my seat without slipping on a pair of hotel slippers - same with hubby.

I don't put my feet on food trays, in between seats so others can see them or wave them in the air like a circus performer (although it would be impressive, considering my size).

I doubt many people have an issue with someone slipping out of their shoes on a long flight but keeping them on the floor where they belong, in fact I think that was even medically recommended as feet swell during flight. What I (and it would appear most others) find "feral boganish" behaviour is the people who then drape said appendages all over every surface which at some point, others will use for the correct uses (seat cushions, arm rests, tray tables, air vents, head rests, call buttons etc) and/or those with feet that stink and/or are filthy. It seems, as hard as it is to believe it that there some people (bogans?) who have no shame and think that is totally normal and acceptable behaviour. It's not (IMHO) and shaming those pigs is at least one method of dealing with them. Despite being a fairly reserved person, I've certainly done the shaming aboard a packed plane when a (so-called) lady shoved her left foot between the fuselage and the 3A seat occupied by my young daughter and rested her foot on my daughters arm rest with her toes up in her arm pit! When I noticed I rose to my feet and in a loud voice so everyone could hear, I berated her as the social outcast that she was, making sure everyone within cooee knew that she thought shoving her toes into my daughter personal space was a social norm and they were left with no doubt what my thoughts were about her slovenly demeanour. She was in row 4 and presumably a FFer. Well she rapidly apologised and cowered for the rest of the flight. Was I a bully? Perhaps, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What you, perhaps jokingly, suggested was not just to remove shoes, so could you tell us where it is culturally acceptable to place filthy feet on a food table like the woman in the photo above is doing? Perhaps she's responding to your proposal.

As a general rule I remove my shoes on long flights. But I don't put my feet anywhere BUT the floor. I have no issue with the bulkhead, except when they're blocking other passengers. Feet on seats (with no socks), tray tables etc is just wrong, though. You're not in your lounge, you're in a public place.

The age of entitlement. That is disgusting.

Something to think about as you sink your head into that business class pillow.
And on arrival he managed stand on it as we waited to get off.

I guess it's lucky that they put fresh pillow cases on them for each flight, isn't it. I've put my feet on a pillow many times on the old sloping flat beds in business, or on top of my cabin bag sitting in the bulkhead in Y. You can think about that as well if you like :P

Maybe unrelated, but how does this kind of stuff wind up on News.com.au? This is Buzzfeed material.

Edit: I am referring to the original post.

I find most of the web news sites are filled with rubbish these days. I'm sick of them telling me about the personal lives of some so called celebrity that I've never heard of and they call it news!

The criteria for "celebrity" has been loosened heaps.

Obscure models are now celebrities too. I really don't need to see a news headline that so and so has just gone shopping with her toddler.

I'm thinking of studying journalism at university next year, but at the rate the industry is going I'm starting to wonder if I should even bother. It's become overrun with sanctimonious grandstanding and pointless celebrity fluff.

And here I was thinking that if I modelled mens underwear in public, I'd end up in prison.........chances are I'd end up a star on News.com with Rupert offering me squillions! What a loser I've been!
