Apple Airtags

DL had baggage tag tracking tech embedded into their tags. I think they are RFID trackers which contain a passenger PNR and tag# . At the ramp if a wrong bag gets put on the aircraft bag belt an alarm will ping/stop the belt.
I could use the DL app to see where the bags were located and messages would say tag# checked in, or, loaded onto DL ### ATL-SLC
Does any other airline have this?.

Has the airtag price been increased from $30 to $50? It is at the apple store.
I bought some from Apple about 12 months ago for $45 each. Where would you have seen them for $30? 🤔

As it happens, while I was at the baggage services desk, the location of my AirTag refreshed and was tracked just to the south of Wollongong. (I assume someone on the plane must have had a phone off flight mode for this to occur?)
I think connecting to wifi is enough. I've been able to track my bags on QF dom flights with wifi, while in-flight.
The in-flight wifi often gives you updates about where you're flying over - if you bother to look at that part of the QF app! :p

AirTags do not have wifi capability - only bluetooth

It needs bluetooth connection at all times to communicate with the outside world.
And you can have bluetooth connectivity and wifi (with both being turned on on a phone) while the phone is in plane mode.

I was mostly commenting that a phone can be in plane mode and you can still get updates on the Apple tag locations (I also realise some other phone may be not in plane mode).

I have a funny screenshot of two of my bags being located during taxiing and takeoff of a flight from DFW. One bag was last located on the runway, and the other at least 1-2km off airport property, so was sensed during ascent.

Yep and placing an iPhone into Airplane Mode does not disable Bluetooth so the AirTags will still keep talking to nearby iPhones. If one of those phones happens to be connected to the inflight Wi-Fi then that would be enough.

I'm considering getting a 4 pack for my luggage while I'm travelling (I know, late to the game!). Are there any negatives I should be aware of?

If they are just going inside luggage (I know not to have them on the outside of the bags) I wouldn't need to purchase holders, would I?

I have mine inside the bags and although you don’t need them, I bought a set of cheap (~$10) coloured holders off Amazon. Then I can clip them onto an internal zip inside the case so they are easier to physically locate. Also the colours of the tags help me tell which one is which: in Find My… you can give the tags names, so I name them with the colour of the tag holder and the case it is in (e.g. “Red - Big Case”). I figure that way if only one bag goes missing from a flight I’ll know which one it is as early as possible.

support what MattA wrote about clipping them into the inside of your bags. They are quite slippery so will probably not stay in a pocket in a piece of luggage and will disappear somewhere if not secured.

That said, for the one I put in my checked bag, I cut a little hole in the lining, and wedged the thing behind the lining into a corner.

No need for holders but I'd zip them into an internal suitcase pocket so you can find them quickly. I bought a cheap set of holders from Amazon.

Yes that's what we do as well. Tags inside bags. I figure that on the outside they won't survive long.

Apple gift cards (either % off / extra Woolies points) helped me offset purchase (incl "free" engraving) from Apple direct last year. Sigh... price of everything keeps heading north (but can't whinge too much cause savings rates much improved too)

Like other replies, I don’t use holders. I have mine in little coin zip lock bags, have unzipped the suitcase lining, and used duct tape to tape them to the case. No baggage handler is going to easily remove my air tag!

I also used the complimentary engraving, so names them accordingly.

I bought the holders of ebay and found them just easier to manage than just the tags themselves.

I can't see any negatives for Airtags at all

Yesterday I took them all out and checked them
