Apple Airtags

I bought the holders of ebay and found them just easier to manage than just the tags themselves.

I can't see any negatives for Airtags at all

Yesterday I took them all out and checked them
Did you check battery level on the app?

I bought a set of 4 airtags and a set of four keyring type holders from apple and used the free engraving service to label each one differently.

I attached the key ring to one of the internal compartment zips inside each case (2) and the backpacks (2). We normally travel with one suitcase each and one backpack each.

The backpacks go in the overhead locker in flight. If someone was to accidently/deliberately move/remove one of our backpacks we could track the location.

Same when we leave our luggage with the porter at hotels. Nice to know our 4 pieces are altogether in the one spot.

I got the missus some Airtags, ( i dont have iphone) and i chucked one in my golf bag when i went on a trip to interstate.
While i was away, the last tracking event of the airtag was at home. well i thought maybe the airtag is not detectable when its inside bag.
But as soon as i arrived home, her iphone picks the airtag, despite it being inside my golfbag, and inside my travel case in another room.

its impossible that passing through 2 airports and returning, train rides, hotels and golf everday that i didnt pass by a single iphone user, i have no idea what gives.

possibly its a good thing she cant track me - but that wasnt the purpose of the test run!
Ok I figured out this problem - apparently is my fault because she turns WIFI off (all the time - I am the stupid one for not knowing this according to her logic) - AND mobile data was disabled for the FIND MY app.

One thing this issue indicates to me after lots of trial and error (more than i have written about here) is that the Airtag location is only stored on the owners phone. ie: if you turn off your phone for 12 hours then send your airtag on a journey with an iphone user who after 6 hours buries it under 6 ft of concrete, your phone will report the airtag as "last seen 12 hours ago with you" - thats my experience.

Can only be 4 letters/numbers
Mine is engraved QS1, QS2, QS3, QS4. This means I can have 99 airtags using that numbering system 🤣
I did something similar. So far two each for SYD+1 and I. Working well so far on this trip.

I even tried the “Find My” trick to get directions back to the new Hotel…😁

we are on a river cruise at Christmas and we plan to train from one port to another meaning we have to find the boat at the second port. Won't need a map with air tags.

So long as someone goes by from time to time that should work.

We were out and about in NYC today and just for laughs I used the “Find” function to check best route back to the room but it told me that the location had been updated around 4pm. I said to SYD+1, “It looks like housing keeping have been through”! 😁

It could have been neighbours either side of under/above but I’d suspect it was HC. The room was done (despite a late departure this morning).

We have done exactly that and it’s great to have them labelled so I don’t get “accused” of “borrowing” Mr Seat 0A’s tags when he can’t find them where he thought he left them 😆. Even more hilarious when Find My tells him exactly where he left them.

We’ve now done 2 trips with them and I won’t be going away without them in the future.

Apple gift cards (either % off / extra Woolies points) helped me offset purchase (incl "free" engraving) from Apple direct last year. Sigh... price of everything keeps heading north (but can't whinge too much cause savings rates much improved too)
Ah wow thanks Lat34 for the tips. I am going to check the discount from Woolies!

Woolies has the 20x offer until the end of today, and then Big W has it starting tomorrow.

Wow thanks for finding it for me. Thanks God that I didn't miss it! Phew. Time for shopping tomorrow!

This is for the Apple gift cards, so you can still redeem them on the Apple Store site with engraving.

As a side note, if you pay for iCloud or other subscriptions through Apple, these gift card credits just sit in your account and go towards those subscriptions as well. Pretty handy way to rack up some bonus points.

Holy cr*ap. Why did you do this?

Thank you Lynda2475!!
May I ask which version did you use? Just the White Mates?

I use Tiles with my Samsung Phone and Tablet and has worked flawlessly for me. You get more details with a subscription (first month is free) but also works fine without a subscription.

I do not know anyone who has had a good results with Airtags who doesn't have an iphone.

Whilst the Samsung tags work, the user base is likely too small to help if your bags are not where they are supposed to be.
User base for the Samsung is definitely not small, but the tags are power hungry. Battery getting low after a month in Europe and I put in new a couple of weeks before departure.
