Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Another media post:

"The riot and protests come after Trump went to the White House to meet President Barack Obama.

Body language expert David Alssema thought Trump appeared fearful during his first visit.

“Trump had his hands in a low steeple position — his fingertips touching to make the shape of a church steeple, indicating a more downward prayer position. This may indicate a more fearful and humble approach. The steeple usually means high levels of confidence and superiority however as it is pointed downward it may also indicate uncertainty,” Mr Alssema said."

So the "steeple position" really means anything you want it to but in this piece the journalist led with the line that Trump was afraid of Obama

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

On the election I was just looking at how many votes each state gets in the Electoral College. It's weighted to the more populous states but still it's something of a gerrymander with the tiny states getting a minimum of three votes...Did you see how the District of Columbia (Washington DC) voted 93% for Clinton? The public service knows which side its bread is buttered it seems.

Australia can hardly give other countries lectures about 'gerrymanders' when in the Australian House of Reps. and Senate, we have Tasmania guaranteed if I recall five H of R seats and six Senators (the logic for the latter being that the Senate constitutionally is the 'States' House') and arguably a gerrymander in South Australia that has seen the Liberal Party win up to about 53 per cent of the vote but lose the election. Sure, some of the situation in SA can be attributed to simply getting 'too many votes' in seats where it doesn't 'need them' to win (or the reverse) but 53 to 47 and still a loss is a very, very big margin for one party to have in the 'popular (statewide) vote.'

When 42% of americans still believe in creationism, they have always been my big worry.
That's not a nice thing to say.

I'm seriously concerned with those who believe in exploding rice bubbles in nothingness and evolution.

This thread has run its course.

Totally disagree that the thread has run it's course.
There is much to discuss in the coming days, religious beliefs aside.

Indeed. The story has not even begun yet.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Apparently the preferred name for the television series about the election and its result has already been used.

Orange is the new black, a prison drama would've been the perfect title for the presidential race. :p

Crumbs! Before commenting on the USA election, let's get some things straight about this country. Tasmania has 5 House of Reps seats which are population based, like the rest of the country. Tasmania, like the other states has 12, count 'em, 12 Senators. Fat lot of good it does us, but thanks for the huge GST subsidy.

Local ABC ( of course) broadcast a Tas local in New York, one of those "I've been crying for a day" type Clinton supporters, who, and I'm not exaggerating, compared the Trump win to the 9/11 attack on New York.

How disgusting; yet how typical.

i think the phrase you are looking for is "ex nihilo", but it has little to do with exploding rice bubbles. The nearest I can get to that is a book titled "maionaisse and the origin of life" by Harold Motowitz (1985). Google it - its a good read.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Doesn't POTUS have to make public their accounts and put their investments into a blind trust of some sort. This will be interesting.

No laws prohibit Trump from involving himself in his private company, the Trump Organisation, while serving in the highest public office.

And Trump has so far resisted the long-standing presidential tradition of giving his holdings to an independent manager, stoking worries of conflicts of interests over his businesses' many financial and foreign ties.

I have a feeling if he gets impeached, it will be for some dodgy business deal.

Donald Trump's conflicts of interest: without precedent in American presidents

Some commentators sugges it was Obama's berating of Trump at a White House party that steeled Trump to aim for POTUS. Might be in 2011?

Yeah Obama and Seth Meyers both tore him a new one. Actually it was a very funny roasting of Trump.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

I have to admit I didn't think Trump would win and friends in the US weren't voting for him. But he's in now, and seeing the riots illustrating the division amongst their country makes me sad. At this point I hope things settle down and that Trump actually does some good for them. I don't really know a lot about either candidate really except for what you find on the internet and in the media and even then it's hard to know what is a lie and what isn't. I think the fact that he is a good businessman (seems to be a lot better at it than the average joe) means he's probably not really racist as he's likely come across all sorts during his business negotiations. He has brought up what appear to be a nice group of kids and from his kids accounts a good father which I think speaks volumes about a person. Despite his campaign antics I think he will actually settle down. He will have his quirks like his weird tweets etc and some off handed comments. Not sure if he will take those to the negotiating room with him but I really hope he does some good things because it's somewhat heartbreaking seeing the country so upset like it is now.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Whoever won there were going to be riots and protests. Imagine the Trump good ol' boys getting into it if they'd lost. They're bad enough in victory from what I've read.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

That isn't the answer :(.

There's always going to be one half happy and the other half not. Just the way of the system. Given they can't change peoples votes then they need to change the system.

Who is Michael Moore, other than looking like a clown with a red nose?

And why should anyone give a rat's bottom?

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

12/19 Guess I'm not moving to Canada. Too damned cold anyway! I think less than half of those that said they'd leave will. It's a lot of hassle to up and leave a country and there's more to life than politics.

None of them will. With that mob, it's all about the gesture and been seen to 'care'. They'll remain in their houses in the Hamptons and in the Hollywood hills, safely insulated from the majority of their fellow Americans, who they dispise.
