Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

The royal we can be as presumptuous as we like, no law against that. As such, it is presumptuous to assume that any quote is for the purpose of advancing anything in particular. I retain the right to have an imagination. I still am tired of the name calling. You now have the right the the last word. Go for it.

I would have thought the purpose of quoting someone would be to advance the conversation, something that McFarlane's thought bubble certainly doesn't.

You are being presumptuous with your name calling comment. A figment of your imagination it seems.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

If you're going to quote someone it pays to check that what they said isn't just mumbo jumbo illogical and idiotic rubbish.
To paraphrase: McFarlane is not of the people. He is of Hollywood........and therefore he's inseparably part of all that is shifty about it. If anyone came close to the make-believe of Hollywood surely it was "shifty" Hillary with her low credibility & trust issues.

"if you are going to quote someone" ... it is perfectly OK to quote someone whether it is mumbo jumbo or whatever, or whether you agree with what is said or not. It is only important to quote what they say verbatim.

No name calling please. It is a tad tedious.

It seems to me that the name calling was directed at Hillary, and given how much has also been directed at DT, I am not sure it is out of keeping with the rest of the thread. I haven't been able to read in to the comment a direct name calling of the OP except in so far as the labelling of the comments being quoted as "mumbo jumbo" etc might reflect back indirectly.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

"Shifty" implies doing something illegal. So, fortunately, most of the name calling has been removed from the thread.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

And I wouldn't think that Anne Coulter's brand of politics would be whatmeworry's cup of tea either.

The thing I think when seeing this stuff is, since when did what a few people on twitter say actually become newsworthy? :D

And followed by - "Oh I'll throw a few unrelated and out of context tweets and internet meme's together to attract clickbait advertising - thats journalism isn't it?"

Sad but true. A big chunk of what passes for news these days is simply retweets of opinions.

Indirectly related, was reading something the other days suggesting that the algorithms facebook in particular uses to deliver news to people has made facts completely irrelevant - people get the opinions of like minded individuals and it all snowballs from there. Call Trump what you like, but he and his campaign were masters at this, I think he realised early on that "fact checkers" and indeed facts were completely irrelevant to the modern political campaign.

Beginning to wonder if the main difference between the "truth" as reported in a democracy and the "truth" in benign dictatorships and totalitarian regimes is just a difference between who invents the "truth".

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Truth has always been what the winner decides it is.

As Winston Churchil said after his defeat in 1946-"History will be kind to me as I intend to write it."

I saw this quote recently and thought how out of touch is he:
"...our role as journalists is not to judge but inform."
Andrew Meares, SMH 20161204

Its been a long time since journalism lived up to this ideal.

Mum worked at The Advertiser in Adelaide in the days when Murdoch was around. Unless it was the Editorial, journalists were told to stick to fact and not opinion. No predictive stuff.

Journalism these days is non existent. Its all about the opinions of the journalist. They make themselves the story. A radio station here promotes themselves 'we announced it first'. Seriously, who gives a toss who announced it first.

Meanwhile in the real world the Dow closes at 11th record high since Trump's election.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Trump tweeted that he was not happy with Saturday Night Live and their skits on him (again).

Here is one lady's response.

Trump took to Twitter to whine about SNL. This woman's EPIC response is going viral.

Couple of weeks ago Trump hosted 25 TV executives and took them to task for using an unfaltering picture showing his double chin.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

You do realise that the twitterverse and TV comedy shows are not the real world?

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Oh yes Twitter. Hope I'm not missing too much by not having Twitter account.

Not just FB. Google is 'trained' by you to find the results you want. Heard Dr Karl on this. He was debating with some creationists in the US and they showed him their results if they googled something like "10 000 year old Earth" they got all these supporting sites. When Dr Karl googled the same on his device, not theirs, his results were all sites refuting it. It gives you what you want to see. Which explains a lot.
