Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

That's why SA has labor premier even though they did not win popular vote. Liberals did not win majority of states. Simple.
Wasn't that also the case in an Australian Federal election this decade?

Ooh a National Day of Patriotic Devotion. But only one? I bet North Korea has one a month.

Oh no, I didn't realise his anti funding for all family planning would be world wide. This could lead to 70-80,00 maternal deaths pa, a jump in HIV infections, and all other issues and diseases of this nature. Even GWBush allowed funding for o/s condoms for that reason. We'll see how far Trump's effort goes.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

A bit overstated. It just prevents non US overseas agencies from promoting / advocating/ providing abortion services as a method of family planning as a condition of receiving any kind of US aid.
This has been an executive action regulation that has been in force and out of force depending on the governnt's political persuasion. These agencies can still provide family planning services just not abortion for FP reasons. Exceptions include abortions for rape, incest, life of mother.
Nothing to prevent these organisations to source their funding from elsewhere including private donations if they want to provide abortions as a family planning option.

Some have described abortions are a family destruction barbarity, not a "planning option".

Countless innocent lives may be saved as a result of Trump restoring the Mexico City Policy.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Alternative facts:
There are more urgent Aid programmes that should get funding than for abortion services.
What about mal - and under-nutrition, tuberculosis, malaria and HIV and water pollution. These are the biggest killers in the developing world. Get more bang for the buck in these areas. Why is it that HIV is sexy in celebrity land and the others are not?.

Raising income levels is the best solution to all these problems but require cheap energy. Unfortunately cheap energy is an anathema to some.

Hey I heard that Zuckerberg Facebook CEO is building a high stonewall around his mansion. Presumably to keep out the undersirables. A lot of Hollywood celebrities are doing same but yet dump in Trump for doing the same at the southern border.

10m more people watched 45th inauguration than 44th. Don't forget to include TV and online. Celebrities should understand this. Selling concert tickets does not make a celebrity it's only when your persona or antics is ubitiqous in ALL the media that you become a celebrity

Actually looking for Hilary's emails and other people that could be blamed for her defeat

The incongruity of the left:
ABC News (USA) fact check said no serious voter fraud to support Trump claim that nearly 3m illegals voted. But the Russians hacked the election. LOL

Poor families are affected badly by not having access to family planning. The women mostly are responsible for the family. If a woman cannot raise her existing children, feed the family by working away from home/in the home/ in the fields etc, the family becomes poor or poorer. Poor families are very unlikely to be able to educate their children to pull themselves out of this cycle. Their living conditions are bad which creates further health problems including malaria, TB, HIV. Children get sex trafficked, stolen or raped going to fetch water, go to the cities for sex work and become open to diseases etc.

A simplistic attitude to this problem will not help.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

No debate there but I think its a case of the line in the sand. This one just saying family planning should not include abortion. In any case an example of why NGOS should not rely on govt funding. Always strings attached with govt funding

And yet you infer that the only significant aspect to family planning is abortion and use the most simplistic causality argument yourself to get to an end point attributing sex trafficking etc. to, by inference again, Donald Trump's withdrawal of abortion funding. With or without abortion all the things you mention will continue to occur on a massive scale. The discussion should concentrate on how best the available aid resources (which, like it or not are not limitless) can be dispersed for the greatest longer term good. Things like establishing good sanitation / sewerage in places where there is none affect every person in that area to prevent disease whereas abortion, as beneficial as it may well be, affects far fewer and takes a much longer time frame to produce a tangible benefit.

In reality I think all the drum beating about abortion isn't because of concern for poor women in poverty stricken countries - it's the cause celebre for those wanting to champion the right of women to have absolute autonomy over their bodies. Most of those women demonstrating with placards, no doubt, do absolutely nothing of any tangible benefit for poverty stricken women either before or after they stomp up and down the streets.

At some stage you have to move from being idealistic to being practical. A reasonable argument could be mounted that offering sterilisation to some of these women would be a "one time only required" solution to unwanted pregnancies with far better longer term benefits. There will never be enough money or resources to fix all of the problems so, for different reasons to yours, I agree a simplistic attitude won't help.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

I think the abortion/funding tie issue is quite the non-issue as far as Trump himself goes. Reading into it, Republican presidents always adopt this measure, and Democrat Presidents seem to repeal it. So certainly not new and unique to the Trump presidency.

The moves against free trade in the US, and elsewhere, are probably likely to have a much bigger impact on poverty than US government funded aid agencies talking about (and/or providing) abortions - with the direction of the impact (positive or negative) depends on where you live.
