Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

GWBush purposely did not include some o/s family planning. He didn't do a blanket ban as he listened to the experts on the issue.

I think the abortion/funding tie issue is quite the non-issue as far as Trump himself goes. Reading into it, Republican presidents always adopt this measure, and Democrat Presidents seem to repeal it. So certainly not new and unique to the Trump presidency.

The moves against free trade in the US, and elsewhere, are probably likely to have a much bigger impact on poverty than US government funded aid agencies talking about (and/or providing) abortions - with the direction of the impact (positive or negative) depends on where you live.

Come on, this is unfair. Trump does listen to the experts - in fact the ultimate expert on this issue and every other issue. Himself. :p

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

If you think abortion is the panacea for the poor when it comes to family planning this gives some perspective-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermit_Gosnell

He was allowed to get away with murder because you couldn't challenge someone providing a service for the disadvantaged.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

I think that is a little unfair to use the case of Gosnell as an example. There are shonky, dishonest and incompetent operators in almost all spheres, including medicine. He was an opportunist who preyed on the poor.
If anything it is an indictment of poor oversight and regulation by the authorities IMO.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

it is relevant because of this paragraph in the link-
Reports state that state officials had failed to visit or inspect Gosnell's practices since 1993.[SUP][43][/SUP] The grand jury report noted that the medical examiner of Delaware County alerted the Pennsylvania Department of Health that Gosnell had performed an illegal abortion on a 14-year-old who was thirty weeks pregnant;[SUP][53][/SUP] it is also claimed the Pennsylvania Department of Health did not act when they became aware of Gosnell's involvement in the death of Karnamaya Mongar.[SUP][53][/SUP]
Brenda Green, executive director of CHOICE, a nonprofit that connects the underinsured and uninsured with health services, told Katha Pollitt of The Nation that "it tried to report complaints from clients, but the department wouldn’t accept them from a third party. Instead, the patients had to fill out a daunting five-page form, available only in English, that required them to reveal their identities upfront and be available to testify in Harrisburg. Even with CHOICE staffers there to help, only two women agreed to fill out the form, and both decided not to submit it. The Department of State and the Philadelphia Public Health Department also had ample warning of dire conditions and took no action."[SUP][53][/SUP]
In 2011, it was reported that none of Pennsylvania's 22 abortion clinics had been inspected by the government for more than 15 years.[SUP][54][/SUP] Inspections (other than those triggered by complaints) had ceased under Ridge's governorship, as they were perceived to create a barrier to women seeking abortion services

I am not a pro life person. In the late 60s,early 70s I saw enough of the botched backyard abortion complications.I was an active campaigner for abortion law reform.
However the pendulum has swung too far and I really cant support near term abortions for family planning reasons-and these are being done.It is the old moral question-when does life begin.Near term I believe life has begun as the great majority would be able to survive delivery.

I certainly agree with your view in that when life outside the womb has become viable(though I might not class this as life having begun) an abortion should not be performed (unless there is a very compelling reason). Better birth control would allow women to not be in the situation in the first place. I am not an advocate for abortion as a mainstream way of birth control - e.g. get pregnant, have abortion, get pregnant, have abortion. But neither are most of those involved in the work in developing countries or poor areas. The provision of abortion is only one of the services provided by reputable groups.

2016 US Presidential Election

This will probably be the most offensive post on AFF "ever". The fact that none of the presidents have failad to address the woeful sc earn on a status run is ropable...

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

President Trump invited the Pope for lunch on his mega yacht, the Pope accepted and during lunch, a puff of wind blew the Pontiff's hat off, right into the water.
It floated off about 50 feet, then the wind died down and it just
floated in place.
The crew and the secret service were scrambling to launch a boat to go get it, when Trump waved them off, saying "Never mind, boys, I'll
get it."
The Donald climbed over the side of the yacht, walked on the water to
the hat, picked it up, walked back on the water, climbed onto the yacht, and handed the Pope his hat.
The crew was speechless. The security team and the Pope's entourage were speechless. No one knew what to say, not even the Pope.

But that afternoon, NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN all knew how to cover the story. Their banner headlines read,

"TRUMP CAN'T SWIM

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Last time in LAX immigration Mrscove was escorted to a bulk interview room where folks were crying. It took about an hour and I think it was her new passport that singled her out for special treatment. I sat by the bags and waited.... There may be a bit more of this with the changes.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

But this has been discussed and the LA times got it wrong-
UPDATE: I (like the L.A. Times above) got this story wrong: It's not the Visa Waiver Program, it's the Visa Waiver Interview Program, which is an entirely different, and smaller, kettle of fish. It's a waiver from having to come in for an interview to renew a current visa, not a waiver from having to obtain a visa in the first place. I apologize for the error. The rest of the original post can be found after the jump:
The Visa Wavier program is by definition reciprocal—my French in-laws have been able to come here for three months any time they want to, and in return I have been able to visit Europe for the (considerable!) price of a ticket. If the U.S. was to begin requiring in-person interviews to the roughly 22 million people a year who currently enter this country through Visa Wavier, then the favor would likely soon be returned to the more than 12 million of us who travel to Europe. If you make a good more costly, whether in price, compliance, or time, people will purchase less of it.

Re: Trump to suspend VWP? [No!]

There is quite a ruckus going on in the US at their airports today with arrivals.

There is quite a ruckus going on in the US at their airports today with arrivals.

It sounds like a complete mess. Reporters suggesting the Department of Homeland Security wasn't given heads-up or input into the proposed ban. Thousands of previously legal travellers or US residents now left waiting in airports around the world. Remarkable.
