2024 Paris Olympics

The skateboarders are clearly skilful young athletes but I think the high fall/failure rate makes it a poor viewing spectacle for the average viewer
Compare with another new sport like rock climbing in previous games. Great viewing even when you know nothing about it

Judged events can be easier to criticise but there are some 'classic' Olympic sports that are e.g gymnastics, boxing, judo

One of the complaints for host cities is that the Olympics are too expensive and the expansion of sports is part if this. Having said that my personal 'first to axe' would include sports where the Olympics are not the apex but those (e.g football, tennis, golf) probably earn a lot of television dollars

There’s no way FIFA will give up their political influence on the IOC. It does take a lot of the notional 10,000 athlete cap.

Some sports such as Basketball have to accommodate a whole new discipline (3x3) within their athlete cap. Similarly some sports had to reduce the number of categories or disciplines to ensure that they have gender equity within their cap, such as boxing.

Just watching the diving. More specifically the synchronised diving though I believe it should be more fashionably called double diving. Aussie boys just did what I reckon was the least splashy, flashy double twist dive. Might edge out the Canadians who I am sure were spying before the event.

Chinese are exceptional

Possibly:

IOC/host city ----> Want $$$.
So sell TV rights for most $$$
Rights buyer needs to maximise advertising
So IOC/host city include sports that appeal to a demographic not or weakly covered
TV rights revenue maximised by selling more ads for Red Bull, sandshoes, burgers and stuff

So the kiddies get to perform.
Don’t worry, I hear the BNE Olympics will have 9 yos wrestling crocks.

Just been watching some of the skateboarding (OK, so judge me).

Yes, they do fall off/over a lot, don't they? And sometimes they get to start again? Bet the swimmers and track and field would like to have that!!

I remember waking up at 3am in 1996 because I wanted to watch cycling at the Velodrome. Kelly's foot slipped off the pedal at the start. I thought, that's ok, he will sort that out and start again. Nup. Game over.

Some events get so many chances like rhe rowing and all their repercharge.

Modern Pentathlon has a limited appeal to anyone born after about 1900.
As is Greco Roman wrestling, or is it called just wrestling these days.

Trolling:
If Celine Dion is "French-Canadian", then Jessica Fox is more French-Australian (mother is French) and so her medal could be considered a French Gold?

Ageism:
In order to balance out the too young, the AOC should introduce lawn bowls at Brisbane even as a demonstration sport. It's a non judged sport as well. Oh and no helmets required.

Celine is a Canadian citizen is she not?
Whilst Jess was born in France she is an Australian citizen.

Forget the helmets, I couldn't understand why the event was in the olympics.
Trying to figure that out makes my head hurt. And wait till the breakdancing starts!!

I recall an interview with Bach a while ago and when questioned about the addition of sports like bmx tricks, rock climbing, 3x3 basketball, breakdancing, surfing and skateboarding, he said something like "The kids aren't coming to us so we have to go to them". So it's now a popularity contest and history/tradition be damned.

I think there was also plenty of resistance and criticism too when snowboarding events were added to the winter games.

Or its moving with the times.
As do individual sports.

Mark Spitz, the famous American swimmer won all his gold medals in 68b and 72 without wearing goggles or a swim cap. Four years later almost everyone had them.

Interesting to see the Asian nations rise up the rankings with all the shooting medals.

Well, my son obviously needs to train harder... last time he raced Mollie O, he won by half a pool length... year 3 swim carnival, 25m butterfly - they were the only two in that year level who could swim fly, so had an exhibition race 😆

She won the 200m so easily today, great to see 👏
