Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Grrr. I am a few weeks away from booking an F award flight from MXP to MEL with BA/QF.

Good timing... not!

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Mods can this be split to a new thread please?
Too important to get lost sadly

You already have to pay the fuel fine on Aawards with BA.
Sadly Aadvantage is slowly being enhanced.
But still about half the miles for those Aawards I redeem compared to QFF.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

For people who haven't seen the separate thread on the topic, AA says the whole episode was a mistake! I'm not sure who to believe but the important thing is that there will be no new fuel surcharges.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Does anyone know typically how much in taxes/YQ, etc would be required to be paid on a MEL-LHR return with QF/BA* booked with AA ?

*BA on the way back via SIN, QF on the way up via DXB
(As a side note decent availability on this route even only few months out).

Is it like $300-400 or something much more ridiculous ?
How much of the final figure is YQ and how much is ADP ?
ADP I assume can be avoided if final destination was not LHR but another European city ?

Thanks, really appreciate the help on here

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I wasnt ending in LHR but teansiting on a Mel-DXB-LHR- Venice. About $70 in taxes in first class. Don't know if it helps at all...

Hmmm I did a search just now for some random dates in Feb 2014 MEL-DXB-LHR-VCE return in F and its coming up with 160k miles and $269.90 per person.
It must have gone up massively ?

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I thought QF A380 F was virtually impossible to get on Aa because all the QF FFers snapped it all up before it was even released to Aa?

I just booked LHR to MEL J class on QF10 one way using AA miles. taxes were A$450. if you fly BA out of LHR you will pay around A$700.

Hehehe. That's precisely what I thought. Until I looked for myself

Taxes of A$450 for one way J MEL-LHR is a bit steep ?
I just did a dummy booking for two return F MEL-LHR for two people came to 320k and A$908.

Just to expand. Basically QFFs get their seats 353 days in advance and but AAdvantage members can only see availablity (on any airline) 331 days out.

What I seem to be finding is that its very difficult to find availability on MEL-LAX in F. As in right now I can find nothing. Nothing at all. Two weeks ago I found one day when you could fly there but no return. In J it is a little bit better.

But MEL-LHR/Europe or even MEL-DXB in F I am finding plenty of availability on QF flights. Sometimes you will be routed through to SYD to jump on QF1/2 but I certainly won't be complaining (SYD F lounge :p)

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Availability on the Mel/Syd-LHR route with Qantas is fairly reasonable. It is the US route that is next to impossible to book.

Also it is a departure tax with BA, not an arrival tax. You will pay a large tax if you leave from LHR but when going to LHR there is no extra tax.

Don't forget you can go via HKG with Cathay as well to get to LHR.

To be clear the UK APD is payable with all airlines, not just BA. Based on distance & class of travel

jayday13 ticket is from LHR to MEL, and not MEL to LHR

Some people here seem to be mixing real taxes and carrier imposed surcharges (YQ, etc) [profit] Never confuse these

Guys does anyone know if you can hold a booking online before buying miles to complete the purchase; or can this sort of hold only be done over the phone ?

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Does anyone know the policy for infacts (both toddlers aged 2+ years as well as <2 lap-babies) when making a booking on QF or BA using AA miles ?
Do you pay 10% or 50% of miles + cash component, or must you purchase a revenue fare directly from the operating airline ?

I know how it works with LM, tried to research on google and FT for AAdvantage but couldn't really find any answers.
