Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Very happy with this announcement. I prefer to fly into SFO and I'm really pleased it's QF rather than AA.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Very good.

Excuse my ignorance, but is it the case that those already booked SYD/MEL - JFK may now be bumped to AA metal?

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Hat-tip to JonNYC who first tipped the AAnouncement (well, sort of).

And this para from the announcement is concerning:

The enhanced relationship also provides opportunities for future growth into trans-Pacific markets not currently served by either airline, such as New Zealand.

Enhanced?

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

777, ah well. And QF back to SFO with 744s. This was rumoured a few months IIRC.

At least from an aircraft utilisation point of view, I don't see this affecting the JFK flights. The aircraft from BNE usually continues onto JFK, and this flight (as with the A380 SYD and MEL flights) remains daily.

Edit: QF have indeed confirmed that JFK is staying.

Good news! Makes me feel a little better about keeping OWE/EXP status. Will be a good use of SWUs. :)

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

AA got with the times and have reverser herringbone seats (same as CX)
Beats QF Mk2 skybeds every day of the week.

Not sure about 20 year old 777 vs a380 though.

No matter how good the hard product is, if the cabin crew are as rude, lazy and downright unfriendly as they have been on most of my recent AA flights, then what's the point? I'll stick with Qantas for now, but happy to see this if it means more competition and a new route for QF to SFO!

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

So many People within Qantas ( both on the ground & in the air) will be over-joyed with this announcement of QF back to SFO, a destination deep in history for the flying Kangaroo!

And I haven't even scratched the surface with how many loyal & new Customers QF will now capture of its rival.

Move over United!

Thanks for the press release. The author is short on history knowledge though. AA had services into both Sydney and Melbourne in the early 70's, though the service wasn't direct LAX-SYD if that's what they mean, but I don't think it is. A bit like when QF claimed the first non-stop flights between Australia and the USA except Pan Am had done it 20 years earlier!

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Hmmm, as long as no reduction in flights from QF, this has to be a good thing, more choice and options, hopefully maybe a bit more competition, hopefully more AA award space for a route they categorise as one award unlike if Oz flyers go through Asia...

QF are reducing LAX flights, but overall capacity seems to be up.

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

AA metal to OZ is cool.

QF to [new place] is cool in theory, but let's see how much the fares are relative to the other competitors.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

So QF can stop running 747 to LAX from SYD but no solution for BNE to LAX.

They are still running a 747 from SYD to LAX 3x weekly (down from daily). No changes to BNE flights and MEL-LAX retains daily A380 + 2x weekly 747 flights (down from 3x weekly).

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Shame the press release doesn't coincide with QF announcing orders for more long haul aircraft. They sure could use them. Has to happen eventually!
