Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Shame the press release doesn't coincide with QF announcing orders for more long haul aircraft. They sure could use them. Has to happen eventually!

QF need more long haul aircraft ASAP!

I agree a great new re-opening back to SFO but at the expense of a flight to LAX
Qantas Airways and American Airlines will deepen their trans-Pacific alliance, with the Australian carrier adding a new flight between Sydney and San Francisco and the American carrier launching flights between Sydney and Los Angeles.
The new flights, set to begin in December, will boost air capacity between Australia and the mainland United States by 9 per cent.

I guess this will be a 747 rather than a 787-9..... :p

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

QF are still rated as a junk bond borrower so borrowing to buy a couple of planes has had to be deferred while they work on regaining profitability in every operating division. This is a work in progress and coincides with 747s heading to the scrapyard.

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

Presumably, there will be QF codeshares available....?

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

LOL just booked a couple of J award seats on Friday for QF17 connecting the next day to QF11 (LAX-JFK) for Apr next year ... wonder what options will be offered?

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Has anyone seen the AA schedule? I do hope they schedule a flight that lands in Syd @ say 7pm (assuming they can turn it around quickly enough). When QF had the morning flight from LAX, it was the best.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Any indication when the new flights will be on sale/loaded for award inventory? ;)

Showing my age... I was on the first QF SYD/SFO flight many years ago about 1980?? and as luck had it got bumped from J to F last minute at boarding gate to the upper cabin of a 747, had good chat with none other than Bob Jane.

This is a top move by QF, pity they don't go onwards to YVR from SFO the year round, now that would be fantastic.

SFO is a fabulous city and an excellent gateway to other USA cities and missing LA is a plus, it sure will interest those going to Canada, inc. myself.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

great news for aussies who prefer to avoid LAX,

i wonder what the AA flight will do to premium yields on QF though - ex-US AA corporate travellers likely to stick with AA rather than book J or F on QF?

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Given sapphires and emeralds get free MCE on AA metal and it's a 3-3-3 config in MCE... this could get interesting.

a shame Jane Wyman (of "Falcon Crest") is no longer with us to star in a "San Francisco Returns"-style campaign a la Dallas

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

<p>
Now for reciprocal upgrade rights!
I assure you that you do NOT want to have that and have to compete with the mileage millionaires and AA EXPs who will be spending their SWUs on LAX-SYD, you do not want them getting near doing that on QF :D.</p>

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

AA international isn't as bad as AA domestic.. and two days left now to buy AA miles with current offer that includes bonus miles.. $3900 US will get you 192000 miles. Enough for J return to LAX. But thats for code share on QF. Not sure what AA would charge.

The breakdown is 32000 plus 10000 bonus.. $944.00
100000 plus 50000 bonus.. $2950.. Total $3894.

Now just getting a seat...

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

Errr surely I could have posted this in one thread... But...

American Airlines’ Trans-Pacific flights will be operated by its new B777-300ER featuring lie-flat seats in First and Business. Qantas will retain its daily A380 Sydney to Los Angeles and Melbourne to Los Angeles services, as well as its B747 Brisbane-Los Angeles flights, and the airlines will codeshare on each other’s services.

So 3 class service from AA in the 777-300ER. And code share.
