Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Just to note, having flown QF A380 F and AA 77W J multiple times, and AA 77W F once (multiple times on 772 F which is not too dissimilar), my personal product ranking for LAX-SYD with OW in light of this new entry: QF F>>>>>>>>>>AA F>AA J>QF J (AA J seat is better, service and food quality likely better on QF, pick whichever you prefer to have the better of)>>>>>>>>>QF PE>>>>>>>AA MCE>>QF Y>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>AA Y.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Good news! Though it seems Qantas will be further stretched with 747s (if they are flying to SFO 6 times a week but there only has been a reduction of 5 services between Aus and US)
I did wonder about that - given the constant delays and missed connections we have experienced this year, without extra equipment it seems a bit of a stretch. Of no interest to Mr FM and I as it won't offer F, but Master FM will be happy as he is living in SFO and hates flying through LAX. I flew Qantas out of San Francisco a few times in years gone by, so nice to see it returning.

Me too, really like transiting the US via SFO.

Would love to get a seat on the inaugural re-launch :)

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

But MCE=$0 for OWE, so not sure the number of >>'s is appropriate (YMMV)

My ranking doesn't take into account price, just pure flying enjoyment/quality. QF PE is definitely more expensive than MCE will be if you are OWE (or OWS for that matter), and MCE won't cost "that" much, relative to the price difference between AA MCE as a non-elite and QF PE. But QF PE would definitely be "better". "Worth it" is an entirely different set of circumstances.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Perhaps this is a trigger point for getting some 787 or some new birds?
Once they are profitable and get the credit rating back they will confirm the orders who the 747 fleet wont be as stretched. Well in the long term anyway till the aircraft arrive. Of they will pull out of other non profitable routes

As linked in press release from QF - summary table

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

When I redeemed AA miles (MileSAAver) for SYD-LAX two years ago for 2 x First seats on QF, it was less than 80,000 miles (maybe 72,500) each, for one way. I guess that AA flights will be similar and with better availability, hopefully.

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

Soooo.... award space available...?

One thing this will impact is the amount of Y+ space available on the SYD-LAX route.

Re: About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

I am currently flying SYD/SFO 3x per year, business class, privately funded. I've been paying $5k-$8k on QF or NZ for each trip. I was initially pleased to hear that QF plans to fly direct, but now that there is a bit of competition, I wonder if I am better off shifting to AA. I don't care about food or service. I am interested in a flat bed, decent lounge and earning enough points for the occasional free flight. Would I be better off with AA?

Red Roo when can the SYD/SFO flights be booked online?

Qantas and American Airlines will shortly apply for regulatory approval for these new arrangements. We'll have more information over the coming weeks, including details about when the new flights will be available for sale.

Any indication when the new flights will be on sale/loaded for award inventory? ;)

Surely this has to result in an easier way to use SWU and maintain status without relying on codeshares. With the added bonus of potentially avoiding LAX on QF as well. :)
Seems like a good thing to me.

Does non-stop have any value? That seems to be the main plus for the QF flight to SFO, saves 3-4 hrs vs taking AA or QF via LAX.
