Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Maybe his plan B is to just sink the boats when they enter our waters. Given the involvement of the military and language of "border protection", as far as he's concerned we're basically under invasion anyway.

The animosity and fear the public feels towards refugees is clearly quite high. Shouldn't be too hard a sell. Heck, Sydney's western suburbs will probably cheer it on.
drsmithy,

Until this time the whole border security command was a mishmash and very fractured in its approach and there were no defined lines of command between the various bodies. At least now there is/will be a management process.

The military are the ones with the hardware so I have to ask what 'other' resources would you use instead?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

And therefore we should do nothing ?

Australia's population is 22 million? And the total population of Earth is 7+ billion?

And you want Australia to start it all off because we know better and we can afford high carbon taxes?

It's not a "border security" issue unless those "boat people" are rolling up in amphibious landing vehicles, in uniforms, with weapons.

We are not being invaded. The unsubtle attempt by the Coalition to change their language and actions to play to that impression is one of the more disgusting things they've done.

We have strict border security at airports and the like.......whats the diff?

It was called 'Border Protection Command' under the Labor Government. Prior to March 1995 it was called 'Joint Offshore Protection Command.'

Irrespective of what you call it there is an issue that involves a lot of people arriving by boat and many of them need help or rescuing.

I'll ask again in words that you 'might' like. Who has the resources, other than the military, to do the work and rescue, pickup or what ever you want to call it these boat people :?:

Mr Rudd 2 days before the 2007 election-
"Mr Rudd said Labor would take asylum-seekers who had been rescued from leaky boats to Christmas Island, would turn back seaworthy vessels containing such people on the high seas, and would not lift the current intake of African refugees."You'd turn them back," he said of boats approaching Australia, emphasising that Labor believed in an "orderly immigration system" enforced by deterrence."You cannot have anything that is orderly if you allow people who do not have a lawful visa in this country to roam free," he said. "That's why you need a detention system. I know that's politically contentious, but one follows from the other."Deterrence is effective through the detention system but also your preparedness to take appropriate action as the vessels approach Australian waters on the high seas." - See more at: Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I read these comments somewhere else, today:

"We are to get a 3 star general to stop the boats. I was surprised that anybody in the defence force would take this job on given that you can't in practical terms turn back the boats that are sinking ...."

and

"A 3 star general is now in charge of refugees who arrive in fishing boats. He gives weekly security updates. Seriously? ... "

And I tend to agree with the spirit of the comments.

Will Bob Carr retire now or wait until the day before the senate returns from recess?

It is not the use of military hardware I have a problem with, it is the framing of the refugee issue as some sort of threat to sovereignty and national security that requires a military operation to address (and an attempt to stir up a type of patriotic fervour from the public).

Like I said, when boat people start arriving in amphibious assault vehicles, in uniforms and carrying guns, I'm willing to entertain the implication we're being invaded.

We wouldn't be "starting it all off".

And yes, we can "afford high carbon taxes". Just like we can afford all sorts of other extra expenses that we pay to protect ourselves from pollution and other distasteful by products of industry.

Good point. What is the difference ? Because apparently there's such a big one between arriving by air and arriving by boat, that the latter just about means you should never set foot in the country again.

Sounds very much like 1984...what a year 1949 was; still very much relevant in 2013 and beyond.

Yes. Labor's policy is just as morally bankrupt as the Coalition's. What's your point ?

Current Australian population is over 23.1m... maybe there has been more of these boat arrivals than we have been told.

Your post shows a total lack of understanding of how the Australian military operate (work) and is insulting to those involved to the point of being contemptuous. The Australian military does much more humanitarian work than than traditional 'military' operations. Maybe the 'stir up a type of patriotic fervour from the public' is more in your mind than elsewhere as it certainly is not how I see it and how many people I know see it.

Who would you like to go and 'rescue' people from the sinking boats if not the RAN and RAAF :?: The boat people do need to be picked up from their sinking boats before they stay on the mainland, go to PNG or whatever else.

You do not appear to have read what I wrote, or if you did, you did not comprehend it. Have another go.

Good point. What is the difference ?

One lot carry their papers/passports on their person when they arrive - the other burn/throw/bury/hide theirs.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Tony Abbott and the liberal party hiding the boats?
Coalition to come clean on boats
View attachment 19260

In other news, Tony Abbott promises to get rid of Windows 8 and to bring back windows 95. ;)
Abbott promises to ditch Windows 8

To be fair to him announcing how many boats arrive on a daily basis in the national news is hardly going to discourage people from getting on boats.

But in today's political environment yes he's going to get a lot of flack for it.
