I've come to the realisation that it's better not to feed the trolls - they end up feeding themselves

drsmithy,Maybe his plan B is to just sink the boats when they enter our waters. Given the involvement of the military and language of "border protection", as far as he's concerned we're basically under invasion anyway.
The animosity and fear the public feels towards refugees is clearly quite high. Shouldn't be too hard a sell. Heck, Sydney's western suburbs will probably cheer it on.
And therefore we should do nothing ?

It's not a "border security" issue unless those "boat people" are rolling up in amphibious landing vehicles, in uniforms, with weapons.drsmithy,
Until this time the whole border security command was a mishmash and very fractured in its approach and there were no defined lines of command between the various bodies. At least now there is/will be a management process.
The military are the ones with the hardware so I have to ask what 'other' resources would you use instead?

We are not being invaded. The unsubtle attempt by the Coalition to change their language and actions to play to that impression is one of the more disgusting things they've done.
It was called 'Border Protection Command' under the Labor Government. Prior to March 1995 it was called 'Joint Offshore Protection Command.'It's not a "border security" issue unless those "boat people" are rolling up in amphibious landing vehicles, in uniforms, with weapons.

It is not the use of military hardware I have a problem with, it is the framing of the refugee issue as some sort of threat to sovereignty and national security that requires a military operation to address (and an attempt to stir up a type of patriotic fervour from the public).drsmithy,

We wouldn't be "starting it all off".Australia's population is 22 million? And the total population of Earth is 7+ billion?
And you want Australia to start it all off because we know better and we can afford high carbon taxes?
Good point. What is the difference ? Because apparently there's such a big one between arriving by air and arriving by boat, that the latter just about means you should never set foot in the country again. We have strict border security at airports and the like.......whats the diff?

Like I said, when boat people start arriving in amphibious assault vehicles, in uniforms and carrying guns, I'm willing to entertain the suggestion we're being invaded.
Yes. Labor's policy is just as morally bankrupt as the Coalition's. What's your point ?Mr Rudd 2 days before the 2007 election-
"Mr Rudd said Labor would take asylum-seekers who had been rescued from leaky boats to Christmas Island, would turn back seaworthy vessels containing such people on the high seas, and would not lift the current intake of African refugees."You'd turn them back," he said of boats approaching Australia, emphasising that Labor believed in an "orderly immigration system" enforced by deterrence."You cannot have anything that is orderly if you allow people who do not have a lawful visa in this country to roam free," he said. "That's why you need a detention system. I know that's politically contentious, but one follows from the other."Deterrence is effective through the detention system but also your preparedness to take appropriate action as the vessels approach Australian waters on the high seas." - See more at: Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian

Your post shows a total lack of understanding of how the Australian military operate (work) and is insulting to those involved to the point of being contemptuous. The Australian military does much more humanitarian work than than traditional 'military' operations. Maybe the 'stir up a type of patriotic fervour from the public' is more in your mind than elsewhere as it certainly is not how I see it and how many people I know see it.It is not the use of military hardware I have a problem with, it is the framing of the refugee issue as some sort of threat to sovereignty and national security that requires a military operation to address (and an attempt to stir up a type of patriotic fervour from the public).

Who would you like to go and 'rescue' people from the sinking boats if not the RAN and RAAF :?: The boat people do need to be picked up from their sinking boats before they stay on the mainland, go to PNG or whatever else.Good point. What is the difference ? Because apparently there's such a big one between arriving by air and arriving by boat, that the latter just about means you should never set foot in the country again.
You do not appear to have read what I wrote, or if you did, you did not comprehend it. Have another go.Who would you like to go and 'rescue' people from the sinking boats if not the RAN and RAAF :?: The boat people do need to be picked up from their sinking boats before they stay on the mainland, go to PNG or whatever else.
