You do not appear to have read what I wrote, or if you did, you did not comprehend it. Have another go.
I have read and reread and personally find your comments unrealistic and incomprehensible.

If you would answer what is put to you the discussion could progress. Until that time I won't comment further.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

One lot carry their papers/passports on their person when they arrive - the other burn/throw/bury/hide theirs.

There are people who destroy their papers when they arrive by plane and those who arrive by boat who retain their papers.

To generalise that people who arrive without entry visas by plane are 'better' than those who arrive by boat is incorrect.

To continue your line of thinking then surely anybody who arrives without a visa, or overstays a visa is a bad person. (Not true).

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I hope that the military doesn't become a political scapegoat for "hiding the boats", with an army general being given the task of running Operation Sovereign Borders. It's as though he's being made a front person for a political argument.

Also, we certainly don't have military running our air border (airports) which are controlled by the civil power.

No-one has ever arrived via air without a passport ?

How would it be a reason for such worse treatment, even if it were true ?

It's no coincidence that the flow has slowed since the Indonesian Gov withdrew VOA for certain citizens. A few more initiatives like this will see the problem sorted......a few winks & nods in regards to foreign aid should see even better results.

Can you even get on a plane without a visa/passport? Even if you did it would be a short visit!

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Slightly O/T. The next GG will be announced soon, with the current one finishing up in March 2014. Tony Abbott will probably want to appoint John Howard.

Whether he succeeds in this, we'll know soon I guess. He may have to settle for Peter Cosgrove.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

My money is on Peter Cosgrove's replacement as CDF.

A thorough gentleman and I suggest he would be supported by both sides of politics. Although, he would be the first foreign born GG since 1965. This is the only impediment I can see to him assuming the role.

If he went down this track all he needs is the approval from the Queen. I'm sure HM would be very accepting of JH.....although he would probably wait until his third term to do it;)

How long did Bob wait before he cleared his backstabbing debt with Bill Hayden by appointing him GG ? IIRC it was around 6 years.

Cosgrove is probably a bit more of an icon, rather than Hurley (perhaps Houston might have been a contender, but may be seen by the Libs as a bit tarnished due to the work he did on the expert panel, for Julia Gillard, on the boat people business).

I thought I was pretty clear.

I do not have a problem with military resources being used.

I have a problem with the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers being treated as some sort of border protection or national security issue, as if they are some sort of invasion we need to defend against, and thus take action in a miltary-style and structured operation.

This is an immigration and humanitarian issue. Not an "OMG we're being invaded by brown muslim people" issue.

And, obviously, once you're on the plane your passport becomes indestructible.

Not if you have a valid claim to asylum it wouldn't. You know, like 90%-odd of boat arrivals are found to be ?

I can see the next 9+ years are going to be tough for you.

There's a new show in town & I'm guessing some people will struggle with it.....me on the other hand:D:D:D:D

I thought that Clive wasn't officially in yet.

So if one million people rock up in boats and ~90% are deemed refugees, can Australia cope with that many?

Yes. Labor's policy is just as morally bankrupt as the Coalition's. What's your point ?

You do not appear to have read what I wrote, or if you did, you did not comprehend it. Have another go.

The problem seems to me that you don't understand what others write.
Kevin Rudd promised before the election in 2007 to do what Tony Abbott promised before this election. He has not even been sworn in a week yet the twitterati on here are calling him a failure. So what did Kevin achieve?Boat arrivals going from virtually none to tens of thousands a year.Over a thousand deaths which nobody wants to take responsibility for.Sorry but everyone who agreed with Kevin Rudd's changes to illegal arrivals(and yes even the UN concedes they are illegal arrivals) needs to step back and look at the consequences of their actions.

I didn't agree with Rudd's approach to refugees. What possible reason would you have to believe that I do ?

Incidentally, they're not "illegal arrivals". There's nothing illegal about entering a country and claiming asylum. We've been through this before.

If the Australian military enacts a coup because they don't like having to tow people back out to see to drown, can Australia cope with that ?

Your question is nonsensical. In what scenario, are you proposing nothing else changes but "one million people rock up in boats" ?

Doubtful. Worst case, I can leave quite easily with two alternative citizenship options and an open job offer with a friend's company in the USA.

If the Coalition does what I expect they will to the economy, I'd be likely to leave even if I didn't find many of their other policies morally bankrupt.

There's a new show in town & I'm guessing some people will struggle with it.....me on the other hand:D:D:D:D
Yes. I'm sure you'll have a great time gloating about others' suffering. It seems to be a conservative thing.
