Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

drsmithy,

I will ask once more in as simple terms as I'm able.

You are very critical of what Rudd & Abbott have/are doing re the boat people yet you have not at any stage offered a viable alternate.

What would you do, that is practical, to resolve the boat people situation and would you implement your solution :?:

With the caveat that I have no idea what you would consider "practical" or "resolving the boat people situation", here's a few things to get started:

Increase the humanitarian quota
Operate regional refugee assessment centres
Make more direct paths to Australia available for asylum seekers from both within the region and further afield
Reduce processing times. In particular, release them into the community as soon as practicable after initial health and background checks
Provide more support for integration into the community
Provide incentives (if not requirements) for regional settlement

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Some of the ideas above will actually increase the numbers.

Let all the boat people that want to come here come here

Just don't give them any welfare benefits

They'll stop coming soon enough

They get nada whilst in detention and in processing.

Isn't that impossible to know unless you know the total global number of refugees moving between countries?

I thought that the whole reason behind the success of the Pacific Solution was that there were no refugees coming anyway due to a global drop in movements...

(That of course would mean that politicians took the credit for something they actually had no control over <gasp> ;))

We accept our fair share of refugees. I'd like that share to be made up of those most in need of genuine assistance, rather than those looking to immigrate here.

We have a global responsibility, and if we ignore the world's basket cases and trouble spots, then we are not doing our bit. We should - along with other nations - be working to improve conditions in other nations to the point where people don't feel they have to leave their native lands.

Funny how refugees kept on turning up trying to enter the other developed nations, and they just happened to stop setting out for Australia.

And the tide coincidentally changed as soon as Rudd got elected.

Whether I agree with you or not is not the issue though in principle I partially do.

The issue is the implication of these measures and that is what I have been asking you. You want to take the military, or biggest and best humanitarian organisation, but replace it with ????????.

You still haven't read what I've written. Try again.

I do not have any problem with military resources being used. I do not want to replace the military's humanitarian capabilities with anything.

I have a problem with the context of the situation being presented as a military operation defending our country against invasion.

This is an immigration and humanitarian problem. Not a national security or "border protection" problem.

Only a small fraction of the world's refugees come to Australia, in no small part due to our distance from everything. When the overall volume drops, that small fraction may approach zero.

Numbers of what ? Refugees ? Yes, that's the point of "increase the humanitarian quota".

I give up :!:

You clearly do not want to understand what many here have been trying to explain to you.

Now that the PM Tony Abbott has decided that censorship is the way to go (i.e. numbers of boats/refugees arriving) perhaps the Liberal fanbois can tell us what information will be kept from us next?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Isn't it wonderful not having to listen to Kevin Rudd anymore.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I'm just glad not to see his selfies. Does anyone else find them really annoying?

Did we say we are going to stop the boats, oops we're just going to stop talking about them.

Seems Hide the Boats is a complete waste of time. Seems te world is connected by electronic communications. Who Knew? Not Abbott and co it seems. Looks like we have Buy the Sattelite Phones next.

The smuggler, Dawood Amiri, told Fairfax Media that the policy "won't change anything" from the syndicates' point of view.

"When the boat is being rescued and the passengers on board see the Australian authorities, they call the Hawaladar from their satellite phone. Then the smuggler gets the money," Amiri said.

The thread topic is Abbott in Government. Not Drsmithy in Government. As you have told me we must comment on what Abbott does. Why do you make this personal about other AFF memebrs?
