Abbott in Government

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

From what I have read regarding the cigarette tax hikes, looks like Abbott will keep the tax hikes in place even though his Treasurer did say it was Labor's idea to only raise revenue. And Abbott boasts that he can keep the costs down for ordinary (smoking) australians.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Some people are just mad that KRuddy didn't win, that is all!

To be honest, these posts are not very productive to the discussion at all.

Your posts may or may not be aimed at mine, it's irrelevant really, however for me, the new government pledged prior to winning the election that they were able to better keep the costs down upon australian families [eg removal of carbon, mining taxes etc]. At that time, they criticised ALP's substantial cigarette tax hikes as a means to raise revenue to 'fix the budget crisis' .... so here we are post election, and now my question which nobody here has yet willing to answer, is whether or not Abbott will "keep" this new tax increase .... from my reading it appears he will keep the tax, even though they were highly critical of same prior to the election?

Now, should we attack the subject ..... Abbott pledged to stop the boats. So far, he has stopped the numbers being reported.

Will Abbott support the ailing motor industry?

Will I (and many PAYG earners) still get 12% guaranteed superannuation contributions?

Once we attack the subject, we will see what he can/cannot do.

No it's very relevant

ALP Fanbois are jumping up and down about this and that and it's been how long since Abbott was sworn in.....

It's amusing to say the least

Nothing to see here - IIRC they stated they would keep the cig tax + a few other changes that were thrown around during the last days of the ALP regime.

google search delivered this - Coalition to keep $10b of ALP tax rises, cuts - The West Australian

Indeed - Was mentioned before the election but again some people just want to keep throwing dirt because they don't like the election result!

They're full of good ideas.

Lol well I'm liking it so far. :) It's a nice change because I hated just about everything the other lot did or thought about doing.

18/9 ..... besides a week is a long time in politics. Lots to do, nothing to see.

Perfect, thanks.

Kind of hypocritical that one can criticise something out and then adopt it themselves.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Well Abbott did say that in his Budget Reply speech. So no hypocrisy at all.
Talking of Hypocrisy I now see the ALP leadership contenders both have 3 word slogans.

That's not the case here, the coalition criticised the inept budgeting that led to the need for these taxation increases, but as per the budget reply speech stated they would be retained. (not the inept budgeting)

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I can't find the exact figure I read that there will be 1 person to do 2 current jobs.
The economy is slowing, the booms are over.

Unemployment - and particularly underemployment - is rising. Our productive capacity has been hollowed out for a decade and attitudes towards entrepreneurialism and real work are extremely negative, with unproductive parasite industries like finance and real estate seen as the best path to wealth. Our leaders and elites think the best way to improve our society is by reducing labour costs and race to the bottom to improve profits (which will trickle down, don'tcha know).

Consumers are tapped out on debt, disposable income is stagnant or shrinking, costs of living are rising, inflation is going to start increasing as the dollar drops.

That's the 5-10 year outlook. Past that horizon we're on the cusp of a robotics and automation revolution that will literally make huge swathes of the workforce - most forms of of low-skilled manual labour - obselete.

One thing we are not going to be short of in the forseeable future, is people to do work.

and maybe that's why there's been a change of government!

Pretty much all of those problems are the result of Howard & Costello's policies, putting another Coalition Government in isn't going to change a thing (well, it might accelerate the decline slightly).

One persons decline is another persons spectacular improvement :)

Hypocrisy and politics in the same breath. Hard to credit.
