Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Maybe because they are intending to change those things we complained about-
The testing requirements were introduced by the Rudd government amid claims of "widespread employer rorting" and require companies to demonstrate that they have tried for four months to recruit Australians before nominating a foreign worker for a 457 visa. The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison, said last night: "We strongly opposed these measures in opposition and will be consulting on how best to cut union red tape on 457s, while maintaining legitimate protections that support the integrity of the scheme. "The previous government made some wild and unsubstantiated claims about abuse of the scheme to ram their union-sponsored changes through the parliament."One of our first steps will be to put these claims to the test." - See more at: Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian

From what I have seen, quite a few employers did the abuse the 457 visa scheme under the LNP.

Most did not even bother placing advertisements in Australia.

One panel beater I know imported 3 guys from Italy. Apparently he thought 80K was too much for a local panel beater.

Gillard's communications director was employed through the 457 visa arrangement as apparently we don't have any communications people here. ;)

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I suppose the need to raise the debt ceiling is TA's fault too I mean he should have had it sorted by now couldn't be anything to do with the inept former government.
Given the amount of new spending Abbot committed to, any need to "raise" the (completely artificial) "debt ceiling" is 100% his fault.

Our company is still employing people from Singapore.

Apparently Australia does not have the necessary skilled IT staff to do the job or is it more to do with the fact that you get 2 for 1 or maybe even 3 for 1 if you employee from overseas?

An overseas worker should not be allowed to be employed in Australia on a 457 visa if there are qualified people here looking for a job. Cheaper labour is not a good enough excuse for granting a 457 visa.

Not sure who to blame here. ALP or LNP?

It's amazing how many foreign students are in Australia to 'study" 500,000+.
When I often ask these students after completing graduation, 'So are you going to return to China, Singapore, Taiwan, India, Indonesia etc.?.. Well over 90% mention that they are wanting to stay here, job search, boyfriend, girlfriend search & apply for a PR. (I'm serious)
I used to have a rental property close to a University, Hairdresser & Cookery School
IMHO most of the students staying only obtained a student visa for the purpose of a 'stepping stone" for PR.
Competition for positions of jobs in all categories is so fierce nowadays.
Sadly I know so many well qualified & experienced with a willingness to work people that are being 'shelved" for the foreign 'cheaper imports".
Our Government is well aware of this, though minimal is actually being done to keep the numbers restricted & the evident rampant abuse of the 457 visa scheme as one example.
There is certainly a wonderful pool of qualified talent, expertise & experience all over Australia to fill these positions, or alternatively simply retrain qualify the unemployed to occupy the 'unfilled" 'vacant" occupations.

IT has always been like this. It seemed that a Masters of IT could get you through the skilled migration points scheme and qualify you to drive taxis.

Personally, I think there should be an open work rights agreement with UK,AU,NZ and Canada like the EU system. I realize it already exists for NZ citizens in AU. For this to work, you need countries with similar welfare, wages, education etc. This is the problem in the EU with large disparities between West & East.

Unfortunately this wonderful pool of talent we had in Australia in IT has now disappeared and they are doing something else as they were out of work for too long. And the salaries in Australia are now poor in IT and getting lower with continued import of overseas workers.

One thing a lot of people do not understand when it comes to IT and employing people from overseas. You do not get the same quality employing someone from overseas. And you can take that statement any way you want as I have worked with them both overseas and now in Australia as well.

So one apparently has a Masters of IT - (with honours I might add) from Unificticious it seems & then decides to reside in Australia to drive a taxi??
Fantastic screening process..
I smell a rat or two along the process line..

I believe this and understand why many of those 'students' are using the 'studying' as a stepping stone to become residents.

On the other hand, any government will not dare crack down on student visas primarily for one and only one reason .... it is one of our biggest exports and brings in a lot of revenue.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Universities rely on overseas student fares for much of their income as a result of Government cuts to funding. I'd prefer they rationalise all their undergraduate courses. Just far too much specialisation at undergraduate level and each requires their individual set of Departments, Profs and the like. Too many academic troughs for all the snouts.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

So do only dumb women join the Coalition? Is that the real problem here?? [BTW - I think you are right!]

Having read your post there's an image of Kelly O'Dwyer etched in my mind that I just can't shift. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

And if you really want to see some poor performing politicians (male and female) then you need to visit South Australia. Obviously as Labor has been in power for over 10 years, they relate to that party mostly. But think like, a Minister for Roads and Safety. Forty-seven days after being appointed Minister for Road Safety, he was forced to apologise for his "unacceptable" driving record which listed 58 traffic offences and over $10,000 in fines. He subsequently resigned the portfolio. He didnt think he needed to tell the boss!

I wouldn't say female Labor politicians are that much up to speed - with a few exceptions, just like in life.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

"Prime Minister Tony Abbott has provided the first explanation from the government for West Australian MP Don Randall's taxpayer-funded trip to Cairns, saying Mr Randall had ''very important discussions'' with the then Coalition whip."

however

"But when quizzed by The Australian Financial Review, Mr Entsch refused to divulge the content of those discussions and admitted he did not know if they constituted "electorate business" as Mr Randall had claimed."

This is sounding very, very slippery to me.

And foreign students spend on other livings costs associated with living here. Some students even buy brand new 2013 BMW 320d sedans here purely because it is cheaper than a 2013 Toyota Corolla in Singapore.

Wikipedia the source of all government knowledge. Anyone who voted for this mob need to go out the back and shoot themselves. You have elected a mob of imbeciles.

.

Yet Abbott and co can only bang on about 40000 people arriving on boats.

Thanks to John Howard's government. There are plenty of academics who hold status but are not paid by the university. If we look at how university staff are paid it quickly becomes clear there is no trough.

Which has nothing to do with Abbott in government.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Quote of the day from our Environment Minister (sic) in response to a question about climate change .....

Razia Iqbal - "So [Mr Abbott] no longer thinks its absolute cough?"

**** Hunt - "'Look, with great respect, you can swear on international radio, you can invite me from Australia to do this, you can be profoundly rude, I'm happy to answer but I'm not going to be sworn at.''
Razia Iqbal - ''Mr Hunt, I'm merely quoting your prime minister,''

And the headline that won't be appearing on Murdoch's propaganda delivery mechanisms tomorrow - "ABBOTT PROFOUNDLY RUDE SAYS HUNT"

This is rapidly becoming the Muppet Show .....
