Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Just back from 3.5 weeks abroad and so catching up on what's happened in my absence, but still the same people with the same positions... At least some of the responses are semi comical but yes they have drifted away from the policy questions a little.. :)
No one is interested in discussing policy. Whenever the discussion becomes dangerously close enough to policy discussion someone diverts with talk of polls, bookie odds, or some other distraction.

Any discussion of principle or policy is like gelignite.

Australia spends more than most on education but the outcomes are deteriorating. That has nothing to do with economics.

So you agree that the current model is broken? Good - as that is what Gonski found as well and led to the new needs-based model.

Growth in spending more than four times more OECD. Our teachers are amongst the highest paid in the world.

Did you get those "facts" from the right-wing Education Standards Institute? [Interesting that the word "Institute" in an organisations' name often indicates extreme right-wing views.]. Funny that the News article states that Australian teacher wages have risen by 13% since 2000 whilst the OECD average was 17%. Does that fall into the "lies", "damn lies" or "statistics" bucket?

I'd never call anyone ignorant btw, that's just plain rude. But it seems to be de rigueur with some posters, usually those who claim they take a higher moral ground. Interesting that.

You asked a question that outed yourself unashamedly as being ignorant of the reasons why the Gonski reforms were necessary. I suggested you ask a teacher. Sorry if that suggestion offends you.

Ah no. I just stated that Gonski might not be the best solution. Throwing money isn't the best solution but it's the one Labor does at any difficult place.

I don't read any extremist material be it right wing or left wing. I have no idea why you are blathering about Institutes.

Has it not occurred to you that people who ask questions are not ignorant? Why did you think I was offended by asking a teacher? Good grief. It's people calling others ignorant and the like that is offensive. But latch on to something as a red herring, wontcha.

But really why do I bother when all you do is hurl abuse rather than discuss.

Oh dear - Despicable T's diplomatic skills are catching on! Now Andrew Robb and Julie Bishop are making rookie errors. I can see now why the ministerial gag order was put in place, but it seems that the cone of silence is not working 100%. Who knew?

And the Conski-Gonski-Conski debacle is fascinating to watch. Crass Pain was comical in opposition but simply ridiculous in government if he thinks school principals and state education ministers are as stupid as the voters.

I went to high school with the current federal education minister...he was a jerk then, and continues to be the same today. He knows absolutely NOTHING about education (a lawyer by training) altho. he thinks he does...in year 8, he announced to the class that he would be Prime Minister of Australia some day...that will be the day I renounce my Australian citizenship. I just wish we had more intelligent politicians but hey, if you pay peanuts, you get....

OK...just had to get that off my chest:evil::evil::evil:

would I be correct in guessing that Chrissie spent more than his fair share of time having his head flushed by the other kids?

Have you considered that the 13% raise might have been from a higher base to begin with?

Besides - if the causal nexus between spending and results was so robust, California should have the best schools in the world.

Did Pyne go to a public school, or is that a silly questions as I thought the front bench all went to private and elite schools? That may explain why the cuts to the agreement will come from the public schools according to the Liberal NSW Education Min.

kpc went to school with Pyne I believe. If I remember correctly kpc may have said he was nothing brilliant at school so he is well qualified to be a politician.

You mean he might have been bullied by the lefties?

Or the righties. Or the centre-ies. Or those who couldn't give a toss about political labels. Or those who deliberately read things that aren't there in forum posts.

St Ignatius College, Adelaide but don't hold that against the school...funny story...in Year 9 Asian History, a surprise test was sprung on us....Chris got 17/20, I got 3/20:shock:, which was the 3rd highest mark in the class! Chris bragged to the whole school that he had beaten me in a test....unfortunately for Chris, the teacher had to void the test given only 2 kids in the class passed which would reflect poorly on his teaching skills . Naturally, we all expected another "surprise test" would be sprung on us in the next few days so I actually studied for it...lo behold, I got 19/20 for the 2nd test which counted:mrgreen:!! Chris only got 17/20....he whinged to the teacher (and anyone who would listen) for the whole year as to how unfair it was....

In year 12, Chris, IIRC, did not finish in the top 10 in the year....modesty prevents me saying where I finished;). I haven't seen / spoken to Chris since Yr 12 but if I bumped into Chris again, would he remember me? Absolutely...he hated me as I always did better than him at school, apart from the one test above which was voided :)

A certain Geography teacher of ours used to deal very well with his constant whingeing by often saying "Shut up, Pyne"!!

I repeat again for the record; if CP ever became PM of Australia, I would renounce my Australian citizenship...not sure how I would do this given i was born in Melbourne but I will find a way!!

I draw my conclusions based on the fact you were the one to post the original comment.

KPC, It seems it was a mutual hate. ;). Hmmm, I have no memory of tests at school. I gave all the stuff up a while ago.

St Iggys is a good Catholic school.

Shame he didn't go to my school. We had a teacher who'd bash the whingers and A-holes.

This is probably the worst start for a new government since the 1970's. Foreign policy stuff ups, whishy washy back flips and blocking foreign investment when the nationals whinge. Looks like they are heading for one term like the Liberals in Victoria.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

People think bashing of others at school is good?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Good for the A-holes who desperately deserve it. I certainly took my medicine for the stupid things I did without whinging. Are people that PC that they are ignorant of what happened in schools back then?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Of course I know what happened. I can't believe people still condone it as adults.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Well, it's certainly got the Indo rubbish of the front pages......

True - most Coalition voters are clueless when it comes to the impact of atrocious diplomatic stuff-ups. They are also clueless about education matters as long as "their" schools get money they don't need whilst funding is ripped away from the most dis-advantaged students.

There's a word for that sort of person but it goes like this on AFF :- ****

Good to see Tony quickly paying off the debts - NBN screwed, Foxtel saved - tick - Thanks Rupert. Public schools screwed, Catholic schools topped up - tick - Thanks George. The kick in the face for our biggest Asian neighbours - just for an encore I guess? Gosh aren't Tony's Team travelling beautifully (not)
