Additional Benefit on Velocity Earning Cards: 40K Points, 6 Months Gold or $300 Travel Bank

Does this mean the application for the credit card can be made after 31 May? The terms only state that you need to make the selection (40k points or Gold status or travel credit) by 31 May which I have done. But I couldn't apply for the credit card during the month of May as I was overseas. Any input is appreciated.
Each card had its own Ts and Cs. Some of them had to be applied for by 31 May but there were a couple, IIRC (and I think it is mentioned upthread) where the application could be in June.

On edit - the Attitude cards had an application deadline of 30 June: Additional Benefit on Velocity Earning Cards: 40K Points, 6 Months Gold or $300 Travel Bank

Yes, but unclear whether that would get the bonus 40k as the Ts and Cs associated with that offer said the Flyer card had to be applied for prior to 31 May. The Flyer Ts and Cs were updated on 1 June and presumably they will be updated again on 1 July - but at some point the 40k bonus will cease.

It isn't explicitly excluded, and the terms even provide for that process, in points b and c:

(b) make your selection of the Exclusive Benefit by visiting between 12:01am (AEST) 26 April 2022 and 11:59pm (AEST) 31 May 2022 (prior to the card application) and receive a confirmation email to the nominated email address in your Velocity Frequent Flyer account, (c) after receipt of the confirmation email, successfully apply for any card featured on Velocity Points Earning Credit Cards that has an annual card fee

Per the above it notes that you must:
1) activate the offer by 31 May "prior to card application"
2) await confirmation email (also fulfilled by selection activation, but terms allow that this is not immediate)
3) then in step c "apply for any card" after the above steps occur.

gda's scenario meets this.

It is not the Virgin Flyer t and cs that determine eligibility, but the card selection info that appears on the Velocity page linked above. This notes 30 Jun for selected cards and would not be expected to change subsequently (but if it did like Virgin status credits may also be extended, but I would not expect this to happen).

The link for Velocity Earning Credit Cards goes to a page that changed on 1 June to have new deadlines for the Flyer and High Flyer cards. Prior to 31 May, the linked page said the application deadline for those cards was 31 May and a case could be made (by Velocity) that the Ts and Cs at the time the offer was activated would be the ones that count. GDA may have success in arguing the contrary - or the points might come automatically anyway - but you would assume that step 3 will have some drop dead point and you could not expect to avail of the offer in three months' or three years' time.

If i recall correctly the credit card needed to be approved before June 1st to be eligible for the promo.

Thank you Mr H and odysseus. I called VFF today and they advised the credit card application needs to have submitted by 31 May to receive the 40k bonus points. I pointed out that their terms state that the selection (40k / gold / travel credit) can be made until 11:59 pm on 31 May. If you wait for the email to arrive, again as per their terms, there is no way the email would arrive before 31 May to apply for a card if someone makes the selection towards the very end. I also stated that no where it says the 40k is only available if credit card application is made before 31 May. VFF agent agreed with my argument and advised to make a written complaint. I think I will let this go. *sigh*

Per what I wrote, steps 2 and 3 are possible a short time after 31 May. Step 3 is the actual step to visit the card listing page, which means it would occur after June 1, which would be when the listing to 30 June is available.

That doesn't mean that it can be visited indefinitely, but following the instructions means the current page is the page at 1 June at the time they are followed.

Good to hear they were amenable to raising a dispute if needed. I suspect it would still work automatically without needing a complaint, and if it came to the worst suspect it would also be successful, but of course that is up to them and yourself as to whether you wish to pursue it.

Hi, does anyone have any idea in relation to the current virgin money credit card, if you need to spend the $1500 by the first statement being issued to get the first 25k bonus points?

Yes you do. But from my experience almost a year ago, the first points were not credited on the first statement and were credited as a double helping on the second statement.

We’re not off to a good start, Virgin Money and me. 4 days in and I’ve already been charged an international transaction fee on a purchase in AUD 🤦‍♀️

Out of interest, was it an online purchase that could've had backend links to an o/s company??

I've come across this type of scenario over the years.

I wondered that. But the original charge comes up in AUD on the VM app. The bill is also in AUD, and the domain is .au. It would be a very quick way to lose a lot of long term Australian customers if they started charging in a foreign currency. I’ve been with them for over a decade and never had a problem.

I’m now wondering if the bonus points are worth my time.

I would view this as a positive. It is always nice to have a reason to break up with one card and move on to the next, especially on the occasion you have to explain yourself to an approving officer at the next card.

I’m now wondering if the bonus points are worth my time.

Of course it is! 140,000 Velocity points for $69 plus the occasional erroneous forex charge. That's one of the best bonuses out there.

If they're processing overseas, the charge will appear as AUD as that is how it is sent through the credit card networks and on to Virgin/Citi. The conversion is done by the merchant's network before it gets to Visa (as well as when the site natively prices in AUD i.e. no need for conversion).

The domain being AU doesn't matter, as that just means they try to appear more 'local' to Australians, including by having a local site, and process in AU. There are many examples of this where the business is based overseas (and even a few where the business is local but just outsourced payment overseas).

When you say 'you've never had a problem' I take it you mean with other credit card providers? It's up to the definitions of different banks as some banks do not add on an extra charge for payments processed overseas in AUD whereas others do (just as some charge conversion fees for foreign currency, and some don't).

I would say it's most likely the merchant you bought from processed the payment overseas and, per Citi's terms (and they aren't the only ones) they add an international processing fee when this occurs.

Yes it's rather specific in the T&Cs that it will include times when the merchant charges in AUD and based in AU but perhaps processes offshore. It does say this may not be clear to you as a customer.

Quite how they can get away with saying that is another story.

I try to ignore these fees while I am going for minimum spend thresholds. But cards that have conditions like this usually end up cancelled long before ones that don't.

Yes, it’s very opaque. I don’t think this card is a keeper.

Don't forget the $129 Virgin Travel voucher.

Also, I've had this card I think four times. I recall one of the occasions where I was not given a bonus payment one month but was resolved the next. I recently had this card just closed and it didn't occur on that occasion. I have also had one occasion where I was paid a 5th bonus payment. I tried again hitting $1500 on the fifth month but no extra 25k points so it was promptly closed. :)
