AFF Gathering #7 at HBA on 29 November - 1 December

As a suggestion for the first night, the New Sydney Hotel is a deceptively simple-looking pub which is central, has great boutique beers and food and none of the annoyances (pokies, tv). I know the owner and would be happy to book the upstairs area for a private party....
As a reasonably long time member whose travel has come to a halt the last few years (just after LTG!) I'm looking forward to meeting some of you on my home turf...

Sounds like a good suggestion, but the committee will have to get back to you. I can't speak for them.

That said, I'll add you to the Platinum list :)
 
Only just noticed this thread! I'm based in Hobart, and would love to join in the fun.

As for places to eat - best in Hobart = The Source (at MONA), Garagistes (city), Piccolo (north hobart)

Can't really go wrong with the ones near the waterfront (e.g. grand chancellor, Quest, henry jones, somerset on the pier).

MONA pavilions would probably be spectacularly good to stay at, but MONA is about 30 minutes drive from the city (or a cruise from the wharf), Somerset

Wrest Point is another option. It's Australia's first casino, but don't bother comparing it to Crown/Star (it's rather disappointing). But it does have its own airport transfers (unsure whether free) and the Point Revolving Restaurant at its top floor is one of the best.

As a (near) local, IMO the no-question best place to stay which is on the docks, is the Henry Jones Art Hotel; refurbished historic building and pretty up-market. Some-one else suggested The Islington, which is a fine place, but not in the city (although only a 15 min cab ride). Worth researching though.

There's always Wrest Point, but maybe 20 mins out of the city and past its best. Fabulous views from the tower.

The Grand Chancellor is also on the docks, great views if you face the right way but a modern joint lacking character. The lobby bar would be a good meeting point BTW.

There is accommodation at MONA, but I've never seen. You'd be well out of the way except for the MONA visit.

Im back to Gold for this event . How things can change in a month . The 40th I was going too , is off then on & now a maybe . Who knows . Time to take control & work on what I'm going to do.

<<gulp>> our Tassie dates have changed with my roster (gosh I love shift work). Am now out, we will be down there 8-18/11..
 
Grand Chancellor for me. Webjet sent me a voucher and I just HAD to use it. Unfortunately I couldn't make the Flybuys function work to further reduce the cash component :)

Try to get a dock/water view. The other side of the hotel just looks over inner city Hobart.
