AFF Gathering #7 at HBA on 29 November - 1 December

Hi there, happy to advise on anything as a local.

That Saturday itinerary is pretty tight, if you go to MONA you'll need to sacrifice Salamanca or the Cascade Tour (bear in mind MONA has a craft brewery, cellar door, restaurant etc on site). Catch the ferry out there - that leaves next to Salamanca - and you'll get the best view of Hobart/river/mountain other than from atop the Mountain. If you're not familiar with the museum have a look at MONA DOT NET DOT AU to gauge whether you'd love or hate it.

Quest Waterfront and Salamanca Inn have the market and MONA ferry within two blocks.

Port Arthur is a solid day trip, return. If you do the brewery tour at Cascade it's a short drive further up the road to the top of Mt Wellington.

Food-wise have a look at Garagistes, Ethos, Montys at the higher end but not insane; Elizabeth Food & Wine, Cascade Hotel, The Republic, Fish 349, are good "fancier than counter meal/chippie"; and Harbour Lights on same block as Quest and MONA ferry makes the legendary local scallop pies.

Let me know if there's other things I can help with, I do lots of artist liaison work so am pretty knowledgeable about local sights/ideas/distances/opening hours etc. That's one big point actually - if you are likely to be arriving/checking in after 8pm and aren't booked for dinner I suggest eat up on the plane and suss out room service as soon as you get in. Very tricky to get an unreserved meal nearby in Hobart after 9pm.

...
Firstly, welcome to AFF scarletohairer!

I will look out for the suggestions you have listed. I have been to MONA and found 2 hours enough time. So an early morning market, late morning MONA with lunch followed by mid afternoon Cascade might fit the bill. I will consult with my learned collegues after my visit before firming things up.

:)

Welcome to AFF scarletohairer!

I have heard excellent things about Garagistes, but our group might be a little too large to fit there?

Also, it is great to hear that samh004 snr is attending. I look forward to catching up again, just no dog biscuits this time :p

Agree that Salamanca Inn is well positioned for Mona ferry / market. Anyone looking for something a bit more upmarket should look at the Henry Jones Art Hotel. Its right on the docks, but the other side from Salamanca Inn / market, but only 5-10 mins additional walk.

Although I'm a HBA local (well, a bit out of town as it happens) I did stay here a year ago due to a client seminar.

The top place to stay at the docks, including the Grand Chancellor and Lenna.

Might dip my toe in, and try to meet some of you guys. What's the Mercure like?

The 'Grand Mercure' in central Hobart is the former 'Hadley's Hotel' in Murray Street - a grand old dame in the centre of Hobart, maybe 10 mins walk downhill from the docks and MONA ferry etc. Has recently had a new wing open, so it might be a bit more modern to stay there now. I think the new wing is marketed under 'Central Apartments'.

The former 'Mercure Hobart' in Bathurst Street is now a Best Western. Note that Google still has this as a Mercure.

I stayed at Hadleys last week, she is indeed a grand old dame that deserves respect!

The accor 50% off promo certainly helped the decision but I would probably stay there again, the new wing looked a hell of a lot more modern

Thanks for that. I had wondered why there were two at the same address.

Seriously considering attending this gathering - especially as I got the Qantas corporate 20% discount offer today.

If you don't mind splashing out, MONA has some superb on-site accommodation. It's also worthwhile considering The Islington, which was named as Gourmet Traveller's best boutique hotel of 2013.

Hmmm .. yes, Islington would be a good place to stay. Might point out that its a bit out of the way though. But then maybe only 10 min taxi to the waterfront / downtown.

I'm in - flights booked. Arriving on QF1015 29/11 - departing QF1012 02/12. I haven't decided on accommodation yet.

Ive just booked my incoming flight, QF1019 so im a confirmed platinum.

Still undecided on hotels, might do a Grand Mercure or MONA depending on my budget allowances.

im departing on 2nd december on QF1012
