I have now extracted a digit and booked my MEL-HBA leg:

JQ709 arriving HBA 1605

Mod: would you mind updating the transport post at the head of this thread with Newk and my details? Ta.

Penegal, jdevereau3 and I had a bit of a chat last Friday. We are close to firming up a program, but here is a bit of an idea:

Friday 29th Nov
Dinner and Drinks central Hobart as people arrive

Saturday 30th November
Salamanca Market
MOMA
Cascade Brewery tour
... the order of these is yet to be finalised

Dinner somewhere fancy

Sunday 1st December
Recovery breakfast somewhere
or Golf
or Tour of Port Arthur

Departure
or Dinner for those staying until Monday

Monday 2nd December
Departure

ah, the magic word: "golf". I was wondering about that. Makes note to self "needs a later flight back on Sunday"

Sounds like a good weekend. Depending on my employment status I wouldn't mind joining in :D

Departing Sunday 1 Nov 16:50 QF1016
Staying at Quest Savoy

I'll booked flights & accommodation
Arriving Friday 29 Nov 16:40 QF1015

Daresay I won't be making this one, I am keen to get out to a meet very soon though!

AGM in OOL next year?

Aha!

I'll keep my eyes peeled, I'll be in in the air during this years VA AGM. Next time!

Apologies for a late entry. But from a local, might participants really like to let their hair down (and put open credit cards on the table) and go quality: Saffire Freycinet

I love that web site front page!! (make sure you scroll down). And the table-in-the-water image is quite real. Oysters straight off the rack beside you, with wines from a few km away.

Its 2.5 hrs from both Hobart and Launceston and I guarantee stayers won't ever forget it (most likely due to the extended credit card repayment time :( )

And there's golf, sea sports, bushwalking, wine tasting & tours, the famous Wineglass Bay beach etc etc.

Degustation dinner a snip at $300 incl booze (but not the absolute best stuff, of which there is plenty).

Yes, I have stayed here, but I'm not a shareholder!! Absolute best, most memorable place to stay. AFF meets will never be the same!

As a local I expect you'll be joining us?

Unfortunately, much out of the budget for many. I wouldn't be able to attend that and I've been saving all year! Plus, the focus is Hobart, as that city was chosen, so including things that aren't Hobart should in a way be discouraged, and spending the entire time away from Hobart would be like holding AFF #6 (OOL)'s events in Brisbane.

I've seen photos in magazines, and note you can see Wineglass Bay Beach without staying there, but it's also a little far away for the weekend. Hopefully the final chosen activities will satisfy the majority of people, while anyone with the cash could always stay on for that experience ;)

That photo of shucking oysters on a table in the water looks fun!

For the record, you can't see Wineglass Bay without staying there (ie camping on the beach, or on a yacht moored off the beach). You can't even drive there; either a sail around the Freycinet Peninsula from Coles Bay or you hoof it up over the Hazards Mountains! I guess there's also the helicopter tour I guess ...

..but fair 'nuf re other points. I made the comment only half serious, hoping to stimulate debate! Freycinet Peninsula / Coles Bay even without Saffire is the gem of Tasmania. Anyone with spare time when they come down I'd recommend it!

ps at the moment I'm looking to be o/s at that time, so haven't come into this thread before. But will keep an eye on it.

I've always planned to go there "one day". Not this time round but you may have brought the day closer :)

Might dip my toe in, and try to meet some of you guys. What's the Mercure like?

Dads flights are booked. Same as me, except on the way back he gets off in MEL to see the sister, before heading to HKG.

That brings us to 8 confirmed flights.

Yay!

I am heading to HBA in a couple of weeks to check out the local eateries.

I will have a look at Salamanca Inn as one option. If there are other suggestions I will use them to form a short list. I will be staying with a friend who 'enjoys his food' and he will be able to provide some experience as well.
