ALL QF's 330's to get lay flat Business seating - Including Domestic

While I haven't flown the equivalent Delta product, I do wonder whether further enclosing such a small space is necessarily a good thing.

I was somewhat surprised that Qantas didn't announce a new enclosed First seat for the A380, or at least modify their existing arrangement to add some kind of a door.

I find the QF J suites (the ones I always select at least) private enough so don’t feel the need for a door.

Given QF F cabins are almost always full I really would have liked a door for those suites. That and allowing you to sit comfortably on takeoff and landing are the two key things I think they needed to fix re the hard product.

I've got a trip to AKL coming up and am flying J both ways. I wanted to ensure that I was on the 1-2-1 J class layout A330-200 (Which I am on MEL-AKL.) I got a notification to ring QF as my return leg had been changed. I told them I booked J because I believed that the A330's offer a better J product. They simply wanted to advise me that my return flight was now departing 2 hours earlier and when I confirmed that it was an A330, the woman told me that it was a 737. She kindly offered to put me on an A330 service which is the QF158 departing AKL for MEL at 1845. I was somewhat surprised to see on choosing my seat that it was a 2-2-2 layout, ie a different product.
How different is the 2-2-2 layout J class compared to the 1-2-1 layout J class on the A330 trans tasman flights?
Does anyone have any sources where I may be able to look at a video or some photo's at least?

Also, I am QF Silver, presumably I get to use the MEL QF intl J lounge in MEL, but what about in AKL?

The 2-2-2 configuration is angled flat bed seating. The 1-2-1 would be full flat beds in individual suites. The rest of the service and the food is the same. Much better than a 737 which is just large reclier chairs.

As a business class passenger you will have the business class lounge in Auckland.

For the length of flight it is more than acceptable. But that is my opinion. And therein lies the problem everyone will have a different opinion.

And also be aware one other key difference that may or may not be a factor for you personally but the IFE on the non refurb is no where near as good or has the same extent of content that refurbished a/c have.

Well - the 2-2-2 is pretty average :( The reason why they are changing them over to the fully lie-flat suites. I personally don't think it being a day flight makes any difference - you should be able to enjoy what's advertised (which is the full flat): Business | Qantas AU

(This page states all A330s offer the 1-2-1 seating, with no mention of a 2-2-2 configuration.)

How much worse? Significantly.
Should you try for 1-2-1? Yes.

Especially if travelling solo - the privacy is great on the 1-2-1 config. Entertainment better. Seat better. Even for a 3.5 hour flight, it's worth it.
 
the only a330 service from AUK-MEL on that day is the flight I'm on. If I wanted to travel on a refurb, I would have to go through sydney and transit which means more time. looks as though I don't have any other option.

You'd probably need to pay more too. The transit in SYD is pretty ordinary. Starting to sound like it may not be worth it.

What date is the flight?
 
The 2-2-2 configuration on the A330 is still far better than business class on the 737, IMHO.

I would suggest this was more initiated/accelerated due to competition with VA and their (still) better "The Business" on 330's. Before then Qantas were going along with 2x3x2 PE seating for business.
 
Could be worse, our A330 J seat is now a 737 J seat, which is less than ideal with a baby... (hey, it could be Y but that's not the point).
 
My biggest problem with the 2-2-2 is that they haven’t re-covered the seats. The padding has worn out and it feels like sitting on covered steel.

Not necessarily a bad thing. Depending on the age of the child, the A330 bassinet isn't that great
 
So, seven years ago QF announces all 330s will be refurbed to lie flat J, and they still haven't done it? Classic QF marketing spin.

Worse, they don’t even always make it greatly evident that there are two configs – plus had also given up for some time the upgrade of those remaining. With only 2, it wasn’t that many to address, and would have made things consistent – but the beancounters held sway.

Yes, I can see that's the only A330 service that day. Surprised as I thought the lunchtime flight was always an A330 (but now I've looked there seem to be very few A330s servicing that route that week).

The experts on this thread might be able to offer some hope that the refurb will happen by May ???
