From a Triple M tweet - they reckon these backpages have not been very forgiving.

I personally think they aren't harsh enough!

If I were Michael Clarke, I'd hide for a long while after coming back to Australia - I wouldn't be feeling very safe walking down the street!

Wow thanks for the English papers anat0l. Sobering that the English won the toss and used the conditions to such good effect. Already leading by 210 on the first day means it'll be over in 4 days. Time for a change and a Kim Hughes cry Clarkey...

8/15 - third best bowling figures in Ashes history. That'll be around for a while

I went to bed at 2/81 (midnight) so there was little cheer for the Aussies after that...

Over in 4 days! You are also an extreme optimist QF WP.
Reckon England could declare now and have it wrapped up by lunch on the second day.By tea if an Aussie gets a start.

They were the Australian papers :o The english ones will be pretty interesting too

Completely forgot the Ashes was on when I went to bed, though by then it might have already all been over anyway! :p

Love the joke this morning, what Australian stayed at the crease the longest .... the one who ironed the whites

I'm rummaging around for my DVD collection of the West Wing to watch on Saturday night now...

You're right andye, I was reading it on my iPhone5 and didn't make out the paper banners :o - assumed that anat0l had scooped the UK papers for us.

Love the Courier Mail first paragraph in the article I am now reading:

BEFORE lunch, they’d been Broadsided; by stumps all but Rooted. Australian cricket has spiralled into crisis after arguably the darkest day in Ashes history

There sure aren't any stories on cricinfo where anything positive is said today: http://www.espncricinfo.com/

Vale Clive Rice - South African cricketer.

It's a bad start to see the result on the lowest scores page of Ashes Tests. Thank God the 1902 team were routed for 36...

The fact that most of the lowest scores were in the 1800's and only once in the 1900's does a lower score (58 in 1936) challenge what the Aussies did yesterday.

Not the kind of record one wants to remember as being a player that played in yesterdays innings....

I've just received an email from Cricket Australia offering discounted tickets for Summer Tests-coincidence?

They'll forget quickly the next time they score 2/600 on a flat deck, start sledging and win the game by 350.

As soon as they are put under any pressure....

Are we still talking about Shane Watson?

I seriously wonder why the coaches are being paid so much (and the players) if they are not putting the batsmen up against seam, swing and spinning conditions endlessly. They seem to bat on flat tracks in the nets using Kookaburra balls and wonder why they have no idea when a Pom swings the Dukes ball. There's this mantra of "play your natural game" which involves flashing outside off stump at anything and everything. How's that working out? Tour after tour they turn up in England expecting to win, play a couple of county games against third grade opposition then go into the Tests underdone. In the old days they'd spend a good month over there getting used to the light, the pitches, the balls, the swing etc before they played the first Test. Of course no one has the time now but I'm sure we'd start seeing better results. The sides of the 90s and early 2000s could get away with it because they were so good and England was pretty poor. However since 2005 Australia has lost 10 Tests (including this one) to 3. It's all papered over by the two 5-0 whitewashes at home (in between we got flogged 3-1 at home too).

There've been dark days but usually with very inexperienced teams against strong opposition. I've followed cricket since 1974-75 and this is pretty much the worst I've seen. Even the 47 vs SA wasn't as bad as we'd just rolled SA for about 90. Boxing Day 2010 all out for 98 at the MCG is possibly worse being at home.

Next Ashes is 2.5 years away! Only four of the Australian team will possibly/probably still playing then.

Warks, my thoughts exactly. Why has Chris Rogers played so well this Ashes tour - because he plays there (more than anybody else on the team) in the off seasons. 167 matches on the English pitches playing county matches, means he understands the conditions better than most.

Our future hopes probably rest in the core of this team: Aus19 91/3 (38.5 ov, CP Jewell 38*, MW Parkinson 2/18) - Stumps | Live Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

But the key to the Australian cricket teams success has been striking that balance between seniority, experience and maturity.
