Ashes in Australia 2013/14

IMHO Australia were not beaten in the last series by a better English cricket team as such in England but by the appalling umpiring and weather. So far this series has been very good with no appalling nor bad umpiring and a good contest between the teams. The English were so coughy hen they arrived for the Brisbane test, and Australian coaches had stopped sending good players such as Thompson etc home because they had not completed their written homework on time. Maybe the poms need some remedial homework courses?

English friends are in denial and dispare , as it should be:) Looking forward to Perth!

Test underway at the WACA. Aus won toss and batted - Poms may have sent Aus in anyway.
Strong start then Rogers was run out for 11.
Watson came in, scored a few runs and hit a stupid shot to be caught at slip. Last chance for him in second innings? Again? And again?

Warner and Clarke again. 2-53.

Australia 5/154 and the same story for Australian batting all over again.

Interesting quote from Cricinfo which I tend to agree with

cricinfo said:
"Somehow I can't shake that feeling, that Australia is not that good as the media is hyping at the moment and England looks quite good today." Media hype, Gert? Sounds unlikely to me

The umpires were so keen to have drinks there was a 5 ball over. :shock:

You know Billy Bowden is back then!

A good recovery by the NSW bats. Haddin has silenced the doubters this series. If anything his efforts have been more important than Johnson's. Without his runs and partnerships Johnson wouldn't have had the runs to play with.

Aus 5/259 Smith 80 Haddin 52.

Correct. Haddin is scoring runs freely this series. He has been a huge difference for Australia but for how much longer?

Is Wade still the next in line?

Stumps Aus recovered to 6-326 with Smith 103 and Johnson on 39. Haddin made 55. Read that Johnson has scored more runs than any English batsman this series.

Saw this poem on The Guardian website:

[h=2]The Destruction of English Cricket[/h]The Australian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in em'rald and gold;
And the Englishmen quailed at the sight of their 'taches,
And meekly collapsed to surrender the Ashes.

Yet back in the old times, when Summer was here,
T'was then that the Aussies did tremble in fear;
But now tables are turning as Winter draws nigh
And hopes for a victory dwindle and die.

While far round the world all their countrymen slept,
The English, once brilliant, were wholly inept;
And the dreams of those sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
Till they woke in the morn to a score of two-nil.

And there stood the batsman with eyes pale and wide,
With fear in his heart where there once had been pride;
After tortuous minutes pinned back in his crease,
He holed out legside with perplexing caprice.

And there stood the bowler, all taken apart,
With sweat on his brow and dismay in his heart.
And the army was silent, not even a groan,
Their banners unlifted, their trumpet unblown.

The press and the pundits cry out in despair,
And Boycott and Aggers are tearing their hair;
And the might of the English, once lauded so high,

Hath melted like snow 'neath the hot southern sky.

Dont get too carried away with Australia's form. It means nothing as England is woeful.

Australia in trouble again, and saved by number 5, 7 and 8 batsmen again.

Ashes will be wrapped up here as I do not believe England can save the match.

Australia just got a wicket and celebrated wildly. Root reviewed. There was no way in this lifetime that was out. Umpire did not reverse the decision to not out. Australia were no longer celebrating as that was clearly not out.

Technology proved wrong decision. The umpire was the only one who thought he did not make the wrong decision.

Can't view it on a train, but interesting stuff indeed that I'm sure I will hear about.

Oh well he wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway.

We might as well celebrate while we can. It's been a long time between drinks for Australia. I don't care if England is 'woeful' they beat us soundly a few months ago. Australia lost 6 straight Tests not long ago, any win is a cause for celebration.

But by the same token I would be worried about the upcoming tour of South Africa.

There is no point in having DRS if an on field decision cannot be overturned when

a) Hot Spot revealing no mark on Root's bat
b) Real-Time Snicko finding a noise only after ball had passed bat

My points above come from a quote on Cricinfo

"Reviewing the decision immediately, Root was ultimately sent on his way after video evidence could not mount a strong enough case for Tony Hill to overrule the on-field call of Marais Erasmus, despite Hot Spot revealing no mark on Root's bat and Real-Time Snicko finding a noise only after ball had passed bat."

Australia should still win easily but one thing is clear in the clubs that I have been in tonight. There is little interest in this Ashes series. I am guessing due to the one sided contest.

Decided to check the scores before I turn in for the night and find England at 9 for 233.
What a change from the last series.

Reading the written commentary on cricket.com.au, there is the line "One fancies that this game will be over tomorrow."

You've got to be kidding me. Yes we took the first brownie points, but the English have shown some resistance. We'll likely need a good deal of tomorrow to build up a decent total (if we don't get bowled prematurely), then a sharp attack to bowl England out again effectively.

Now 0-122 with a lead of 256 runs (more than they scored in the first dig) and seven sessions to play I'd dare to suggest the Ashes are slipping away from England.

I don't mind the lack of contest after the last time the Poms were here and shellacked us in three Tests by an innings.

I'm still puzzled to think what is so different between then and now, given the shoe is on the other foot....

At least 251 for the first innings is an improvement. They may be scoring 300 an innings by January :p
Which year?

Cricket needs a mercy rule when the Ashes are over after the first 3 tests.

Hell no! We aren't playing U9's park cricket here.

I had to laugh when a guy who hates cricket with a passion commented (my paraphrasing by reading his post) that some guy was a cheat because the ball was a yorker or a sandshoe crusher & the guy got hit on the boot. Um, no....
