ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

This link still seems to be available: https://www.optussmartpay.com/governmenteasypay-ato/
Where were you looking that seemed to indicate you needed a MyGov account?

On the ATO website. https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/Payments-to-ATO/How-to-pay/

I'm looking to trigger bonus points for ATO payment. Does that link come across as ATO to the CC?

Edit: close look and that links needs payment reference number. Since this is a prospective payment, I don't think I have one of those. MyGov it is...

Yep, "ATO Payment Sydney" on ANZ statement.

Do you have a previous payment reference number for the same entity/type of payment. The reference numbers don't change for BAS or PAYG payments for me. YMMY.

Generate your permanent ATO PRN which stays the same (as your TFN).

Have one for personal and another for BAS etc..

The tool is here

https://expertsystems.ato.gov.au/scripts/net/EFTCodes/main.aspx?PID=68&ms=Individuals

I keep those PRN handy as any ATO Payment would require the same PRN.

What a pain. Juts paid via myGov. I have 2 accounts it seems! first problem which account to pay into? Stupidly didn't use the pen generator link. Despite knowing it was legit. But just an online security thing of mine, I have to find that page myself. In this case, I couldn't find it. Hence back to MyGov... What a brilliant system. Who invented that? The same people that didn't want an Australia card?

Probably goes without saying, but the black ink ran out half way through printing the receipt.

Edit: All is forgiven MyGov. Subsequently logged into Centrelink to find out where my $9.80 per fortnight happen to be...  It would seem that logging into MyGov, with second factor code SMS'd to phone, was not enough. No, I have to answer a challenge question as well:- "Mum's name?"

Me: "Jane" (not her real name)
Centrelink: Login fail.
Me: Umm, well usually they ask for mum's maiden name "mum's maiden name"
Login success.

In what universe is does mum's name actually mean mum's former name that she hasn't used for over 40 years?

Our tax dollars hard at work making up funky cool security questions.

No one seems to have a Velocity Red Amex. Everyone I know has been trying to get the Velocity Amex Platinum for the 110,000 point sign on but this Platinum card gets half a point a dollar so is pretty useless for this ATO thread.

Had first look at Red. Are you saying it pays 1 point for every $ including ATO payments? (Other than spend on VA, of course.)

If that's the case I can close my Velocity Platinum card and switch to Red.

No one has confirmed this Foreigner but it would be quite cute if American Express did not hit up the Red Velocity card.

I just compared the two cards and yes, the Velocity platinum has that extra bit about earning 0.5 points for spend on utilities, insurance, telecommunications and tax, etc.

I'm going to speak to Amex this evening, AEST. (Makes me think daylight saving will begin shortly.)

Speak to them re: earning points on ATO payments?

Well done with that call foreigner.
I don't think I need an American Express card that earns that little for ATO but times change as we all know.
ANZ Black Amex and Westpac Platinum Kris Flyer Amex (no longer issued) are head of my Amex cards.
I did get two new ATO bills this week so it never ends.

Yeah, looks like Amex Velocity Red is one of the last cards untouched by frequent ATO payers. Will need to get on it before the majority of people do before Amex "enhance" it to 0.5pts/$.

I did. 1 point per $1 for ATO charges.
Awesome! We'll just need to be sure and wait for someone who has it to test it out on ATO.
Once I use up the free flight on the Plat Amex Velocity, i'll downgrade it to the Red card and test it out if someone hasn't already. But that might not be for a while :(

Still an expensive proposition being Amex at only 1:1, when there are still some visa/MC options with a much lower surcharge.

That's true but when choosing between the various Amex cards the Red Velocity stands above others insofar as reward points go. It doesn't provide benefit of insurance cover, for instance, which other Amex cards may.

Sure, but still wondering about the economics of the much higher surcharge for the same 1 point...

Well, if your using this for ATO only, then who cares about the insurance. The Plat Amex Velocity insurance only covers the primary cardholder and not spouses or any additional cardholder.

I haven't paid the credit card directly from here. What you can do is transfer the funds online from a citibank account to your US account. Totally online which is great because citi are useless on the phone. It is very simple, you just set that account up as a payee. Once the funds are in my US account, I pay my credit card bill from that account. I transfer regularly and have an auto payment for the credit card. Also citibank shows you what rate you will get so you can decide not to go ahead if you don't like the rate. Totally free. I am seriously thinking about starting to pay the taxes this way given that my AA and UA points are worth so much more than the Qantas points I will get if I use the QCU visa.

Consider using another service for better forex rate.
the exchange rate is giving you 0.7 ppd if paying with american card.

Well wouldn't that also depend on who you want/are transferring points across to? E.g. SQ/Etihad

Also would depend on someones annual spend as some people don't spend that much and hence their points earning capacity is somewhat limited if using Visa/MC. To overcome this they would choose the Amex option, albeit at a higher surcharge.
