Australian Cricket Season 2023-2024

Don’t understand most of your abbreviations but I get the gist.

It’s all about ratings and maximising their revenue (fair enough, too — they’re in this to make money). They put what will rate highest on the main channel. So in NSW and Qld they put the rugby league on Nine and the cricket on Gem. In Vic, SA etc they put the rugby league on Gem and the cricket on Nine. In WA they put the news on Nine and the cricket on Gem, then after the news/ACA they put the cricket back on the main channel.

Nine did this in 2019 as well. I must admit it doesn’t particularly bother me but if it bothers you, stream it on 9Now.

FFS?

I agree with what you say about the ads. I’ve been spoiled by Foxtel, though.

Always an Ashes in England highlight… the rain delay. Nighty night folks. Will see what’s what in the Aussie A.M.!

I watch cricket on FTA delayed to skip the mind numbing stupid repeat ads. WCMO is channel 9 swapping test cricket between 9hd and GemGD so I missed the early sessions yesterday and today. FFS pick a channel and stick to it for the series or give it over to Kayo or the ABC.
Totally Agree. We got a new TV last week when old one pixelated. I'd just set it up, got FTA sorted but it didn't seem as though it had tuned in Gem et al and we are still leaning the channel selection as it's very different to the old one. Was about to stream via the app when we finally got it sorted. Just freakin annoying.

Only available on ABC app " because we are contacted to broadcast the footy". Do they play footy after 10 pm? Stupid ABC obsession with digital and pushing us into their app.
That’s only ABC radio. Not Video.

Looks like Baz Bull is starting to have its wheels fall off.:)

I made it to about 1:30AM AEST before this morning's agenda forced me to declare, but such a great thing to wake up to this morning. Incredible, inspirational performance by the captain. Just awesome! 1 down; 2+ to go!

Cheers,
Matt.

I made it through to the end (with some dozing mid-innings)-couldnt bear the thought of missing an even more tense finale.
coughmins and Lyon played splendidly and turned things around but you still got the feeling an English miracle could happen.
Not the result I was after, but it was a compelling test on each of the 5 days

A very rare Australian success chasing in a close match. We seem to win by a mile or not at all in recent memory.

Sets up the next test at Lord's nicely. I wouldn't expect there is much chance of the curators producing such a dead pitch there.

I watch until lunch then record it and watch final session next day!

Why not? I know hindsight is always wonderful but still don't understand the 1st innings declaration.

I don't think the pitch produced was entirely planned. It ws unusually hot and dry in the lead up which may have exacerbated what the groundsmen had done. I don't think it helped the English at all in their need take 20 wickets to get a win. Get all the runs you like but if you can't bowl the other side out twice you won't win a test.

Lord's along with the slope also tends to offer something for the bowlers. I can't see that changing much.

The declaration was about time, thinking they had enough runs and hoping to get quick wickets in a short period before the close of play then having the batsment have to reset.

The rain was also forecast, so it would have been an attempt to speed up the match to take the draw off the table.

I thought Bazboy Stokes had requested/instructed dead pitches everywhere.

The declaration was a sign of arrogance.

Weak bowling teams bat as long as possible to have runs on the board and put the other team under pressure.

Both teams took 18 wickets and a draw would have been the fairer result as neither team were dominant over the other.

I wouldn't say arrogance. It may have been a mistake in hindsight, but the number of missed chances from Bairstow cost England the game just as much, probably even more. As did relying on a spinner that hasn't played first class cricket for a couple of years.

It is part of England's strategy at them moment to increase the pace of the game and try and take the draw out of the equation.

Their stated preference has been to bat 2nd, bat quickly and then back themselves to chase in the 4th innnings. They feel that quick runs are their best way of applying pressure

The pitch changed that plan slightly but the intent was still the same and to be fair it has worked a lot more than it has failed over the last year or so since they have changed their approach.

It may fail gloriously (and I hope it does especially the next 2 tests where I will be there to see it) but I suspect there will be at least a couple of instances in this series where it puts them well on top. Australia have shown how thye intend on repsonding (basically stick to their own plan and focus on their game) where in previous series other teams have panicked and tried to match England blow for blow and come up short.

Certainly makes for an interesting contest.

You do enjoy taking a pessimistic view. If they got a couple of wickets it would have been considered a good strategy.

They are playing elite sport - they are playing to win not for a draw
