Night curfew at 8pm and mandatory masks outside of the home right now would help.
Curfew would assist in exactly the scenarios the deputy police commissioner described today.

How so? There were orders prohibiting these gatherings already, the individuals who were gathering had zero intention of following the rules, adding a nother rule wont change this.

If you are in the supermarket and grab a chocolate bar are they going to remove it from your basket as non essential?
It’s a good joke but not really funny. It’s clear that most people are doing the right thing but some have been taking the Mickey and stretching the rules. Under normal circumstances I’d also be totally against police overreach but people have been asked nicely to obey the rules but some still aren’t.

While I’d agree in 99% of the time people are only doing necessary shopping, it’s clear that the increased police presence is about sending a message that this is serious. Should it be necessary no, but the facts here tend to indicate for some people the message needs reinforcing.

I am glad they pointed out the risk of having tradesmen

Or even trades people?

The hospitalisations and (and now death) in NSW should be a wake up call to the entire country.
As a Melburnian I'll posit that we know all about wake up calls. We've lived through it with derision from the rest of Australia.

Sadly NSW didn't learn the very hard lessons they should have from happened here in Melbourne.

Because there would be no reason for them to be out....going to or returning from a birthday party or playing xbox in a garage...I think that's obvious.

Curfews make it much simpler to enforce the rules.

Without a curfew it is simply impractical to verify that those out walking or driving late at night are only doing so for a valid reason.

That gathering goer if pulled up can simply say I am going to exercise or shop. Police can do little.

With a curfew foot and car traffic is only a fraction, and it is much easier for police to enforce the rules.

playing xbox in a garage

That was in an underground garage of a block of flats, the atteendees were from other flats in same building, id bet money would have happened even with a curfew, as only visible if neighbours dob you in.

I wonder if Janette Young would like to review her comments that young people were more likely to die of AZ with people under 40 in ICU including a teenager on a ventilator.

You tend to dismiss any suggestion that just maybe NSW isn’t perfect.

Curfews have been used by governments all over the world in a crisis for hundreds of years. They mean that police resources can more effectively applied to address the problem.

Eg an 8pm curfew means if you go over to someone’s house for dinner you’d better be home by cutoff. Same for people going to parties.

The other aspect is psychological. Telling people that they can’t leave their house is a huge message to everyone.

Always going to be exceptions but with a curfew it’s much easier for Police to do their job. There should be minimal traffic on the road and those that are can be pulled over by police and questioned about there comings and goings

The comment about " I would be shocked if it wasn't over 100 cases tomorrow" makes me wonder something. What is the lag time between the lab identifying a positive case and NSW Health knowing. Minutes? Hourly update? Give its a 15 hour delay from 8pm to the 11am press conference she must already have a fairly good idea of tomorrows numbers hence the comment.

We don’t need to cough foot around with definitions of common property, building sites etc. if you are not in your place of residence (or in a vehicle) you should have a mask on.

Instead we have to wait till Tuesday for the mask rule on common property.

The common property one is to enforce it INSIDE, so nothing to do with outside masks.

There's no evidence of transmission outdoors (Kerry Chant spoke about this a few days ago). Efforts should focus on enforcing existing rules, not making new ones. There's no point locking your windows when you've got the front door wide open.

Hard disagree on this. Everything that makes it less attractive to be out of your home is needed right now. Masks are part of those tools.

This battle is both medical and behavioural.

And the assertion about no spread outside cannot be made while there are mystery cases.

Yes, this is what I thought you were implying and I'm glad you've now said it.

That is why they would ban masks. It was similar to closing schools early on last year "to send a signal" despite the evidence saying that schools were safe.

I'm arguing with the scientific merit of mandating masks outside, but sure, it definitely sends a signal. It does end the "treat NSW citizens as adults" angle they've used so far, but I'm the first to admit some citizens have abused that and thus harsher measures are needed.
