Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Same thing happened in Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, just got out of hand and couldnt be reigned in, no matter the lockdown conditions. You wont be able to contain this in NSW either, virus will find a way.

We may be in form of lockdown until the government says level of vaccination high enough to not be in lockdown. This NSW like situation could be the new normal for next 6-9 months.

We know sharing a [quarantine] hotel corridor can transmit the virus :( Some blocks may have open and airy corridors, others might be more hotel-like. It would be difficult to have different rules for different types of housing block.
The rule is for indoor common areas - so rooftops / BBQ areas / external walkways are not included.

Before would be told there were 77 up to 8pm last night, and another 50 since then in the time to press conference. The press conference could then call out any important factors re the cases since 8pm as well instead of waiting another 24 hours.
That was then, this is now. If it is 50 since 8pm or 77 in the 24 hours to 8pm, there are unlikely to be able to find the minutia of new important factors - right now there is one BIG factor.

Also some on here were claiming that NSW is using other states contracts tracers. Kerry Chant corrected this myth this morning. Other NSW Health Districts are helping out Sout Wesst Sydney LHD but not interstate ones.

Andrews also confirmed whilst Vic offered, that NSW has not taken up the offer and he admitted with no local knowledge they would be of little help excpt perhaps in a translator capacity with some language groups.

It was a week ago, it did not need to change.

In reality this doesn't seem to be an issue. During the harsh Vic lockdowns (with curfew) I went to the supermarket every Sunday morning at 8am. It was just as quiet then as it is now out of lockdown.

Agreed the VIC supermarkets were no more or less busy at anytime during the second wave lockdown then they were pre covid.

Many outside of VIC scoffed at the perceived draconian rules of the long lockdown last year , nightly 8pm curfew, 1 hour maximum out of the house daily, no more then 5 km radius from home etc but the main point it got across from the get go was it sounded really damn serious so people took it serious.

Everyone in VIC was completely over going back into lockdown last month but most of the population knew that ripping the band aid off, jumping straight back into the deep end for two weeks and just getting it done was however painful, the quickest and easiest way back out

Gladys initial delivery to NSW may as well been please lockdown but if you don’t want too that’s ok.

Sydney has been in lockdown for two weeks - the one big factor for a person getting covid is that one person from the household went outside their home.

Quoting that 'oh its illegal rule breakers that are getting covid during a lockdown' also waters down the message of a lockdown. No one wants to live an isolated existence (except may be hermits or monks). The NSW Premier has added in recent days, words to the effect think about whether you need to leave the home and plan it out so you are out only for as long as necessary.

Numbers during a reporting period or since the reporting period closes adds little value if you've been following the spirit of the rules (eg click and collect, deliveries). More than 50% of either number is not isolating while infectious.

No it doesnt. It highlights where the police need to concentrate their efforts. It highlights why you cant stretch the definition of a household (i.e. the people who you live with) to extended family. It encourages people to report them.

Prof Kelly gave an update on the six people from the Baulkham Hills nursing home that are now in hospital. Five (4 positives + 1 spouse) who were fully vaccinated remain well, but the sixth woman in her 90s who was not vaccinated is now very unwell.

With anecdotal evidence of NSW Police checking shopping contents, then clearly they are not using policing resources correctly on that occasion.

Maybe they should listen to NSW authorities' press conference more

It is an issue with the lowest common denominator.

It seems some of the press couldn't come to terms with a figure then a later figure then the next day having to actually do the maths of subtracting the later figure from this next day's figure to get a real figure.

They were used to a 24 hour figure and didn't that just upset things.

On a different but related note, anyone want to have a guess how many consecutive days the NSW Premier and/or NSW CHO will attend press conferences???

And what a sad day that we are catering to them.

NSW had consistently given both number from the start, everyone in state was used to it, now we get less info because some people started complain now that they have started to pay attention.

Just saw the new Sydney specific covid ad the federal government is launching tonight (it’s not just about the vaccine, it’s about stay home, get tested and get vaccinated).

It’s really graphic and disturbing. I don’t think Albo will be calling it bland.

I’m not sure how it will go down. I think some people will say it is too much.

Until there is nothing of note to repprt. The NSW Premiere and CHO have fronted the press consistently at 11am since the start, only taking breaks in those periods of no cases, as there is no point in a presser when there is nothing of note to report.

But hopefully they give Dr CHant an hour off to gte some new glasses, since hers are broken.

By that logic there is no publicised evidence of transmission inside common property. Going from your unit front door to the apartment block front door is a huge risk obviously.
I thought Dr Chant explained quite clearly that transmission had occurred in such setting where there is no clear point of contact, and that it could have perhaps been contact in the common space. Out of the usual abundance of caution (and unable to obtain a clear link through interviews) the decision has been taken to have people mask up indoors in shared spaces.

Well I saw the new "Arm Yourself" ad and it was underwhelming, and unfortuantely not likley to cut through much more than the old ones with Nick Coatsworth.

I assume the targetted one is more like the old Grim Reaper HIV ones form the late 80s?

Masking up in common property is largely already happening at least where I live.

The full list of lockdown restrictions is here: Additional restrictions for NSW

It cleary calls out that Sex on premises services, Sex services premises, Strip clubs, Nightclubs and Casinos miust close. So adding a curfew to stop attendenace at closed places is redundant.

The police are not miracle workers and they have no hope by themselves in enforcing the lockdown rules for 5 million odd people. Saying that they can already enforce the rules completely ignores that they simply do not have the staff to do so.

Just sitting back and hoping the police can achieve what is an insurmountable task by themselves is foolish as the NSW Police Force is simply not large enough to achieve this. Individuals need to act and be willing to accept tighter rules, otherwise it just becomes a game in people looking for loopholes or dodging the police. The less people make unnecessary trips out for things that are "wants" and not actual "needs" the easier the task will be for the police.

But equally the task of the police needs to be made simpler if you really want to minimise mixing. Curfews assist greatly in achieve that. A small travel zone than 10km would also help.

Curfews mean that after hours that the number need to be checked is very small. And not only that it also means that it is much easier to neighbours to advise the police of comings and goings in the curfew hours.

The police are not going to be checking all shopping bags or policing that people do not buy a chocolate bar as part of their shop for essentials while at the supermarket. What they may do is if they suspect that that person's shop was a non-essential shop is to question why that person, or persons, are out performing an unnecessary shop.

And nobody suggested that.

Putting even more limits on people already doing the right things, and who arent causing the spread is pointless.

The selfish twits that arent following the rules need to start doing so. Everyone has to take personal responsiblity and if you see your neighbours doing the wrong thing you need to report them.
