Are we prepared to admit that Australia has failed and we need a new approach

Yes, and I said this in jest a few weeks ago (in relation to 3 specific LGA's in NW Melbourne) , but IMHO now not in jest, prioritise vaccinations in the NW of Melbourne and SW of Sydney. Impossible to manage through contact tracing once it gets into these areas. Be damned with PC'ness, and equitable distributions. Go after where the risk and disruption are the greatest.

Vic DHHS have now confirmed that son in law , and so in turn us, do not need to take any special measure.

However my wife as she was visiting her mother in aged care facility yesterday (who has medical issues) decided "from an abundance of caution "" and her own peace of mind to go and get tested anyway. So that will have us in isolation till the test result comes back in 8 hours or so.
Well done.

The good news is that it means they’ll be vaccinated.

So… we can literally bring the country to a standstill because of one hire car driver and a couple of removal bros. Are we prepared to admit that Australia has failed and we need a new approach
So what are you saying?
To do next to nothing, keep everything open & Victoria may well get into Sydney scenario, daily cases in the 00's & lockdown for weeks & weeks?

I bet your thinking yeah why not, we can't keep to zero anyway.

Negative tests so far for SA contacts

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall says all close contacts who attended the Shell petrol station in Tailem Bend - and an adjacent cafe - have returned negative results.

Mr Marshall says the close contacts of those affected have also all tested negative but they will all remain in home isolation for 14 days.

SA Health is still investigating a potential third exposure site in Tailem Bend but that’s yet to be confirmed.

Authorities suspect the three Sydney removalists who travelled into SA - two of whom later tested positive - may have made another stop on their way home.

So more lies by these blokes?

And what are you suggesting? We just continue with what is clearly a failed model?

We can’t keep “to zero” and it’s time to admit that. Since reaching zero we’ve had nothing but constant outbreaks and lockdowns countrywide. Isn’t continuing to do the same thing expecting a different result a level of insanity?

NSW website on mandatory testing apparently updated

Fairfield COVID-19 tests

If you live in or are staying in the Fairfield local government area but you work outside this area, you must have a COVID-19 test once every 72 hours (3 days) in order to be allowed to enter a workplace.

You must get tested as soon as possible.

Find a COVID-19 testing clinic

You have until the end of Friday 16 July 2021 to get tested so you can work outside the Fairfield local government area.

So unfortunate to have a fixed 11am press conference to hear the pragmatic backflip to have delayed introduction.

The mandatory testing comes into effect from the weekend

Gladys Berejiklian said of the new mandate for essential workers to get tested every three days:

I think the mandatory testing also applies to people who live outside Fairfield LGA but work in Fairfield LGA - well that's what I'm lead to understand based on AFF discussion.

Edit: I can't see the NSW website (I haven't looked for the actual health orders) saying people from outside Fairfield LGA working in Fairfield LGA need to do mandatory testing - so perhaps this thread was previously misinformed.

Without being critical of clearly stressed people, its not a great reflection of our ability to use critical thinking skills that no-one in those kilometer long queues twigged to the fact that

- it doesn't apply until Saturday (affectively Monday for a fair percentage of workers)
- while it applies to people in the Fairfield LGA it doesn't say you have to get your test in that LGA.

These are people who work outside the LGA, so get your test on your way to or in the place you are working, not in Fairfield where the queues are apparently up to 8 hours. My local had 8 cars, less than 5 minutes wait and I suspect the same at many others.

Sikh volunteers were already as of yesterday delivering free cooked meals to the residents. This group of volunteers have been very active in supporting affected people throughout the pandemic and are in my view to be congratulated on their community spirit.
The Sikh volunteers have been great throughout the pandemic, and do great work in any case.

Well worth donating a few dollars if you have some spare, it will be put to good use. (food banks in Sydney will need a lot of money through lockdown as well and worth contributing to)

Also, if you've ever eaten food from the Gudhwara, you'll know that not only will this be a wholesome nutritious meal, but very tasty as well.

Vic Presser: Also just confirmed that the removalist firm is still not being as forthcoming as Jeroen Weimar would like. Weimar also indicated that the freight industry were also disappointed by the lack of compliance in this instance.

I’m sure most of the freight industry is doing the right thing and is probably dismayed about these dodgy Sydney removalists - because they know what the consequence will be for them, even tighter restrictions and checks on them as a whole….

I would now also not be surprised if these incursions meant a full hard border with NSW to prevent any other leakage from the outbreak…. 😔

Well I would suggest we as a country spent whole lot more time out of lockdown & with zero cases over the last 18months than not.
Even us dirty vics went 86days zero recently.
The zero suppression model has had times of failing, but vastly more often than not it has been successful.
Not sure you could dispute that, but focusing only when it has failed to point that out & go fishing when we are at zero is a little mischievous.

I agree we can't keep to zero going forward forever, but I'm yet to hear reasonably plausible theory on an alternative. It's basically let it rip & pick a 'Boris' freedom day & just go with it. No?

I find it vey hard to picture a middle ground here.
If we were vac'd at total pop ~80% we could let it rip, but until then nothing will change IMO.
Election or no election.

The freight industry has been very good since the early days of the pandemic. So trucks will still cross.

Unfortunately this particular firm has not abided by the guidelines which have worked quite well if used.

Truckies turned away from servos amid concerns three-day testing rule will disrupt supply chains

Road Freight NSW chief executive Simon O'Hara says truck drivers from south-west and western Sydney are "understandably very anxious that they'll lose hours and precious income" under the requirement for workers in the area to get a COVID test every three days.

That comes amid reports from within the industry about drivers being turned away from service station rest areas and bathrooms and being told to 'go' on the side of the road, which Mr O'Hara says he's "angered" by.

"We saw one of our truckies pulled over, asked if he'd been to Sydney and then told to go home and isolate for 14 days — that's not the way the rules work," he says.
"We can't have these mixed messages.
"Truckies are essential workers and, as a consequence, can go about and do their jobs. They need to do their jobs for all of us."

The MCG bloke had a drinking session at Young & Jackson’s before heading to the game.

Yes and another already added. List will most likely keep growing as the interviews continue.

Young & Jacksons will be the 60 year old on the way to the football. As he would have been infected sometime on the 8th, hopefully on the 10th he will not have been too infectious. Though with these new strains we have had cases recorded within 48 hours.

Its clearly a difficult time for all affected.

The implied message from mandatory testing of workers from Fairfield LGA to work outside their LGA is that testing is a requirement to leave the LGA. A police officer could stop you just outside the LGA and ask for your test receipt so then logically an affected person needs to test inside the LGA. Not sure how an overly assertive police officer might react if an affected person said I'm going for a test before heading into work. This would equally apply when the time limits apply - will 72 hours be enforced as 72 hours.

Its good that NSW Health were clearer in their news release.

Yesterday I said this:

The thought just occurred to me that this 3 or 7 day asymptomatic testing won't kick in for at least 3 or 7 days. If the rule is say written today, then the affected person doesn't need to until Friday or Tuesday next week. I'm guessing they don't have to isolate while waiting for result, just test and keep going about their business - well that's what I assume the shift testing of border workers entailed. And then say add another 2 days to get test results back. The effects of this won't be seen for a week. Hmmm...usually the purpose of asymptomatic testing is to find unidentified cases or chains of transmission.

Only for the response on this thread was effectively my post was wrong and people should be testing last night and possibly today (this morning) to be complying.

So if the message (or perhaps more accurately fine detail) could get not get through to avid regular AFF watchers, then you could imagine whether the message got through to the average person.

That word 'failure' again. But which model (as in "a failed model") are you referring to? NSW's? WA's? QLD's Tas'? They are all different approaches or 'models'. Many complants here about inconsistant approaches of the states. So which model has failed?

And again, my definition of "countrywide" is clearly different from yours.
