Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I was talking to my boss tonight…. He said he thought it would be good for NSW to cease the daily press conferences…. Move them to every couple of days and just put out a statement. Not much is really being announced anyway…

Interesting thought and part of the weaning off the rabid obsession with covid. I mean NSW don’t even publish the full exposure lists anymore….

I would love to honestly see this from all states…

Absolutely agree, but fact is the covid obsession is behind the increased attention and power the Premier's have had since early 2020 so I just can't see them stepping away from it. Unless of course, popular opinion sways it that way and it then becomes in their interest....

Perhaps if the feds start pushing certain buttons.

At least the NSW conference only goes for about 45 minutes (VIC were well over an hour last year) and regularly the Premier or CHO will skip one and leave it to their deputies, which I support.

And when you’re lockdown it helps you plan your day around it.

But seriously it is important to hold it daily while there is a lockdown so they can face questions from the media. When NSW was not in lockdown it did a prerecorded briefing from NSW health, no premier, no media and released on social media.

yes or to not discuss case numbers, they would very quickly become lame if they came out and said ... 1 death yesterday ... 2 deaths today .... now all 7 million of you get back in your homes and DONT COME OUT.

I just read that article myself. I need to watch the interview from 730 I think.

But to me it sounds like the feds are loading up and had enough of the screeching from certain states. *Possibly* for the first time in a long time Canberra is just a small step ahead of public opinion in the country which is, I would say, a very healthy place to be at the moment, politically speaking.

SA only does press conferences when there are cases in the community. Which means the instant they call one mid morning then we go and grab some toilet paper. 😂. Picked it last time, was in the shops topping up, an empty car park when I arrived and the press conf held during my shop. Came out to a packed car park and knew it was a lockdown.

Think the journos would go negative if that happened.
But I agree it's the same stuff every day with the same questions. And as cases have increased we are getting less information.
I've taken more to just looking at the NSW Health Twitter account

Could certainly be shorter when there are no changes to settings or vaccinations.

Also not a fan of all the condolences and information around deaths. Not done for plenty of other deaths, and even with this 2nd outbreak NSW is at 111 Covid deaths since 2020, this is way less than NSW would normally expect over two flu seasons.

I am quite sure Gladys said when the vaccination rollout started that she’d “stop reporting daily case numbers when the vulnerable have been vaccinated”. Maybe it’s time to act on that

They are already negative, today there is immense coverage on GB to resign from some commercial parts of the media for example.

I think some of the negativity is that they are cut off when it starts getting heated with ‘last questions!’ and don’t get all their questions answered… so why bother doing them at all when you literally have nothing to say, and can’t really answer the questions anyway - apart from update the same old numbers….

They could deal with the reporters via media relations on the ‘off days’.

Anyway maybe it is too soon to consider this was just a conversation I thought was interesting… maybe they could drop the weekend updates to start perhaps - they are much lower ratings…

In Vic we could tell once we heard the words ‘footballers are on the move today…..’

Sydney commuter numbers rise significantly despite pleas to stay at home

Almost 90,000 extra trips were taken on Sydney’s public transport on Wednesday compared to the same time last month, despite pleas for people to stay home as cases continue to climb one week before the lockdown is scheduled to end.

More than 313,000 trips were taken on Sydney’s public transport network on Wednesday, up by 88,000 compared to Wednesday, July 21, while an extra six million road traffic movements were also recorded, indicating potentially hundreds of thousands additional car trips.

Lifeline had its busiest day ever this week. We keep people physically safe but in the process kill their mental health. So who are the vulnerable now? We can vaccinate against Covid but the prevention in the process is harming others and there is no vaccination for mental health issues. And the wait for psychological assistance is sadly, so long.

Yeah, I realised that today with Port Adelaide (likely end in the top two) playing here tomorrow night.

This (if true) would be a good start and would also drive vaccine numbers up to - no jab no gym, no jab no pub etc

NSW freedom plan for fully vaccinated revealed

Proposal would see bars, restaurants and gyms reopen to fully inoculated once vaccination coverage reaches 70 per cent.

I can’t read the article, but if that is true it sounds reasonable, but I’m also not sure the other premiers and the PM (even) are on the same page. The Prime Minister seems like he wants to take suppression all the way to the election (or till the next option poll says something different).

Hearing Melb numbers not great today but not more than 60. As per what was said publicly yday. Same reason for higher number - people doing Day 13 test in iso. Not such good news.. among new outbreaks - lower ratio of people in iso than yday.
