Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I’m just surprised given so many people can’t get home to Qld, see loved ones etc , border control …. I was genuinely intrigued. Having cancelled 3 trips in 12 months - I will not go to Qld until certainty and sense prevails ……………ie I will not go to qld
Borders aren’t manned everywhere. The family apparently crossed inland.
We have essential workers crossing land borders regularly across several states without being stopped

Border enforcement has varied dramatically throughout Covid. I've had everything from nothing apart from a bored kangaroo, right through to groups of police with automatic weapons. If there's sense behind it, it's of a very limited variety. It doesn't surprise me at all that someone could drive from Melbourne to Queensland, although they might have had troubles if their trip included going from Wodonga to Albury!

Like I said. Super easy. But who would want to come here anyway 😆
Given I’ve gone from multiple overseas trips each year to 200+ days of lockdown in Melb (worse than regional Vic) I thought .. for a time ..…I could travel to somewhere different (for a break) and Australia was my only choice.
How wrong I was….
As I’ve said in another post ….my memory is long, pockets full of refunds from cancelled trips and I have no intention of spending it in WA/QLD for the foreseeable future once the borders reopen.
…never in my life have I ever felt bad about living here and I love Australia… but the disintegration of civic discourse and cooperation really bothers me..

As odd as it sounds, a fully vaxed Sydneysider or Melbournite or even unvaxed but prepared to take a rapid PCR test before travel would be much more welcome in other countries today than some Australian states. Given the current discourse, that may still be the case when both states are open for travel.

I imagine that is going to sound very strange in a decade's time but we are living in interesting times.

A couple of State Premiers will go down in history as some of the biggest nutters ever to be in government.

Yes NSW residents are banned from the hermit kingdoms of WA and QLD and presumably everywhere else in this Great Southern Land without a hard to get special exemption. However I think all of Europe is open to us if we can get permission to leave. We may need to undergo the odd COVID test and possibly do a bit of quarantine but we can gain entry. I wonder if Gladys has considered applying for NSW to join the EEC?

Several large hotel banners (international hotel brands) in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Gold Coast are operating at 10% and below occupancy and considering shutting down until domestic borders reopen….

Was just on news and is clear that their own states intra-market is nowhere near enough to keep them open.

I sure hope everything is able to reopen. Feel so sorry for the workers :(

But I thought your hotels were full in Queensland? That’s why Queenslanders couldn’t come home?

Ergo, lockdowns don't work anymore. Lockouts may. Until there is a leak.
My opinion is that lockdowns do work to flatten the curve/Reff and diminish the pressure on the health service until enough vaccinated but (unless lucky) can't squash the Delta curve. I think the debate is over the severity and how widespread the lockdown needs to be.I doubt curfews and closing playgrounds (for example) make significant differences

Tick... tock... tick... tock...

If you don't go full autarky - North Korea style - and even they've had a few people "removed for great failings" - then you will need to have foolproof systems. The minute people are involved the system wont be foolproof.

208 cases in Vic,less than 50k tests.

Don't care much for the numbers any more, but it's pretty clear the situation in Victoria is likely as serious as it was in NSW. Hopefully vaccines keep going up!

Trouble for Melbourne is not to throw it away - despite what the media says, Sydney has been in a hard lockdown. If Melbourne collectively gives up (not the officials - the people), it could surpass Sydney before the vaccination rate is achieved. Melbourne has a lot more lockdown fatigue than Sydney does so it's understandable.

Curfews definitely dont, the areas that have curfews in Sydney still have rising case numbers, so having very little effect if any at all. Fairfield had declining cases numbers but have started rising again significantly since curfew was introduced.
